“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

The hotel in that picture is where I stayed when Ajax beat us 3 – 0 in the European Cup. After the game Jock Stein stormed into the hotel looking for Bertie Auld and Lou Macari if my memory serves.

I wish Celtic would buy an experienced center half.

As I see it neither Chuck nor Alistair want Div 3 football this year.

very much how I see this , Swally talking about walking out of meetings “cos he didnae like what they were saying” is all playing to the WATP mob, then the direct challenge to the SFA ,when he knows he is wrong , it`s all a fix.

  7. Hi Everyone! Finally found 10 minutes in the day to drop in and catch the last few articles.

Did anyone watching the GAA today notice the Tyrone team wearing #TeamOscar wristbands during their match against Kerry? What a brilliant gesture by the county. Great buch of lads!!!

Jude2005 has a supply and they are also available in The Book Corner in the Forge shopping centre in Glasgow if anyone would like some. I have sent some over to Joe Ledley who said he would give them out to the other players so fingers crossed we might see some of the lads wearing them and bringing awareness to our wee Oscar’s campaign.

Oscar was very ill this last couple of weeks. Anyone following on Twitter or on the blog will have seen just how ill he was. If you check out the last 2 updates on the blog you will get an idea of how difficult a time it was for us…

    http://www.oscarknox.blogspot.co.uk/

And us trying to drive forward a fundraising campaign through all this. Im telling you I will need a very long holiday and a LOT of ice cold beer after this is over.

The good news is Oscar has improved a lot over the last few days. He even stood up and took a few steps today. Keep er lit wee man, you’re nearly there!!! We are just hoping he doesnt catch any infections before his immune system recovers. That could be disastrous.

Back to the football…. HJK Helsinki!!! Uh oh!! We should be too good for these guys if we were match conditioned or in mid-season, but i really fear for us here. Please please let us get past them!!! :-)

Hope you are all keeping well.

Haven’t seen the game but havin watched Ajax (the contributing conveyor belt for the most successful teams to win the ECL) we need to be realistic.

We will do well to get into the group (and with luck) and will have to ‘punch above our weight’.

    Its life guys.

    We are stll CS !.

  9. 1st goal – we stood off the guy

2nd goal – broony on his rear

    3rd goal – tam

4th goal – pushin to get a goal back, conceded a few chances on the break

fair score, but could maybe have done a little better

    basics…

keeper to pass the ball out, rarely launch it

don’t cross the ball hopelessly into the box

    pass the ball more quickly

    some team Ajax, briliant

  10. Alagarvian, Pedro may keep us on a sound financial footing. However the people running Ayax are doing a great job. In three years they have increased revenue from 60 to 97M€ whilst keeping costs almost at the same level. They are achieving a lot more on a comparable cost base. Considering the product we have on the park , we are dramitically underachieving for the budget we have. That is also part of the CEOs remit to maximise the use of the budget , not just to break even. Pedro fails in this respect as bulking up in mediocre players has wasted several million ( bangura, murphy, wilson, etc ).

Anyway I await the Helsinki game ….. there are no excuses if we fail.

Whatever the plan was, and I believe there was a plan.

I think it was along the lines of:

Sell to scapegoat who would carry on for a few seasons.

    Then administration and liquidation.

    Then resurrection of Newco.

    Debt-free Newco in SPL.

The factors that nobody could have foreseen was how quickly and spectacularly Alistair failed as a manager and how the MSN failed just as spectacularly to have Newco shood-in to the SPL.

I think that things are so bad for Newco that even the most ardent supporter such as McColl will baulk at a rescue bid. I think that Sir Walter’s efforts on McColl & Co’s behalf were simply going through the motions.

I honestly cant remember such a lesson and thats with a full strength team against an Ajax mix of experience and youth. Yes, it was a total embarrassment.

Lets not get carried away with the ‘friendly’ cop out. Thats the biggest going over since PSG in 96 at home.

We’ll win our first 2 league games and fall into the comfort zone. Sorry but doesnt wash with me. The gulf in class and tactics, talent, speed anathleticism…well…depressing.

Pre season games are bounce games, could not give a hoot. Even if free on the ST would not bother the 100+ mile round trip to CP.

    It doesn’t matter……………

We are poor, not just Celtic but Scottish football.

Ajax exploited our lack of technique and ability by pressing us at every opportunity. We couldn’t handle it and whilst their confidence soared our’s died.

Fitter, stronger and more intelligent. Celtic players taking a pass tonight were harried and bullied each and every time.

What I would criticise was our player’s tentative reactions. Slow to react just isn’t acceptable. We seemed punch drunk, understandable ?

Perhaps the Amsterdam players are closer to match fitness ? But tonight they always seemed in 2 or 3 yards of space to receive the ball.

Helsinki will have the ability and technique, most European sides do. Remember Utrecht last season ?

It’ll be our lot for quite some time. Scottish football, just last season, has started a half-hearted attempt to change the way our kids develop. That’s at under 12 age group and younger.

    Do the maths.

Oh I agree with you but calling into question the credentials of Celtic fans on the same thread who are legitimately moaning … In most cases constructive criticism … While trying to champion a world wide membership Celtic supporters club deserves a slap down. I am surprised you cant see that.

  19. Alex Salmond’s reaction—this can’t be allowed to happen–to the administration was what Newco’s schemers would have expected.

However since the fans put the chairmen of the big majority of football clubs voted against Newco Rangers the perceived wisdom has changed.

Now Salmond can, and has said, the football people of Scotland have spoken and how can he interfere?

Newco Rangers and their supporters are no longer political movers and shakers.

They are a disorganised rabble that pose no threat to the politicians and certainly are not a vote-winning cause.

  20. Watched the game on my own, thankfully, otherwise I think I would have felt embarassed! OK it was a pre season friendly but the same old failings were there: suicidal defending, giving the ball away and losing possession, no width and no service to the front men. Would we have fared better if Kayal and Sammi had played? I would like to think so, but the gulf in class was frightening.

Still, things can only get better right?! Bring on the Galacticos, Inter and Helsinki!
