“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

    Inter ?

Watched Inter preparing for the new season by playing in The Trofeo Tim over the weekend in Bari .

They won it . They beat Juve 1-0 and AC Milan 2-1.

The Manager , Stramaccioni -said he hopes to use the forthcoming friendlies against Como and Celtic as opportunities to give ” serious prospects ” like Joseph Duncan and Matteo Bianchetti experience of playing with first pick Inter players.

In other Inter news —— Inter are quoted as stating that they are ” confident ” of signing the much touted Brazilian – Lucas Moura—— fee -a cool 32 .5 million euros.

One thing I noticed last night was Ajax had a lot of Scandinavian kids in their team, nothing to stop us bringing Scandinavian kids through the academy. We need to bring through more kids from abroad like Ajax do.

I think that’s a great idea. A benefit financially to the club as well providing the chance for a child to get to see Celtic. Good on ye.

  5. Another interesting snippet from the Andrew smith article “SFL rules state new clubs must gain SFA membership within 14 days of being accepted into their organisation. That means that Friday is the deadline day for Sevco”.

  6. we got beat by a team that are better than us but we have lost nothing and gained something. i am sure the 3 at the back will not be used against european teams again. the worry is that we do appear to need a quality centreback, however, if we cant get better than rogne, charlie or wilson then no thanks.

maybe something positive to take from the games is that victor, izzy, mathews (combined) had less than 90 minutes of football behind them prior to last nights game and they will all improve over the next week or so. sammi’s pace and power on the left hand side of midfield was very much missed and he should be in our team all day long. when i watch celtic with kayal in the team i can see a huge difference in terms of our ability to pressurise teams and to retain the ball i look forward to his return, maybe that will push brown wider on the right which again in my opinion improves his preformance and the teams preformance. foster had a decent game and pulled off a few very good saves.

we would more than likely still get beaten by ajex if both teams brought their A game, but we will improve as there is much more to come from some of our players there is no need to panic. for what it is worth i think we overpay avarage players but if we start to be a little more careful with our money we could get a lot more bang for our bucks. we can do this by identifying young players earlier (next generation of kayals, victors etc…) and by signing few players but making sure the one’s we do sign are of a high standard. having a footballing budget with fewer estabished players and promoting youths etc…

  7. I’ve taken the time to go back and read the pages from this article and have been left quite angry and confused by some comments.

The use of the word ’embarrassment’ is not something that I’ve associated with Celtic for many years. In fact the last time was in the season ’88-’89 season and I’d just left Ibrox after being beaten 5-1.

I spoke to my dad on the phone and described the performance as embarrassing. What followed was one of the biggest tongue lashings since fat Sally had his first ice cream cone.

I’ve never used the word in relation to Celtic since then.

We’ve also had respected CQNers describe the Celtic support as ‘Tartan Armyesque’ and TT describe the support in Amsterdam as a ‘circus’.

I have to say that I have never felt part of some freak, side show when following Celtic and find the implications, offensive and crass.

Quite simply if you feel that way then don’t go back. I’m sure there will be others, more appreciative, who’ll take your ticket.

Thanks, actually I’m going to get a lot out of it – if it takes off.

Since giving up the season books ( we had two) I’ve really wanted to do something else to support the club financially.

This year could be pivotal for the Scottish game and I want our Club to prosper and be seen to be doing so through the positive patronage of the support.

    Thanks for the reply.

  9. big is not aways beautiful

i would rather have 11 quality players than 22 avarage players and i think for to long we, as supporters, have been feed the bull about needing 22 quality players (squad), what you’ve got to ask yourself is this, if you had 22 quality players, you would have 11 wanting out so they could play, so clearly we dont have 22 quality players

Sorry missed your comment last night, fell asleep.

I think we were that good then. Dalglish scored a hatrick, Lennox the other.

Great players. One who had won the European cup, the other went on to.

We’ll always be nostalgic, doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the present.

  12. We are told that Sevco Scotland are in talks with the SFA over the terms of the membership transfer.

Am I missing something here surely the ‘terms’ are not open to negotiation. The SFA’s stance must be if you abide by our rules including any sanctions we choose to impose as a consequence of your predecessors behaviour you may be granted the transfer. Anything else is unacceptable.

Further McCoist is reported to have said “I had to leave the final meeting as I could not support the sanctions they were trying to impose,” and “I can also assure every Rangers fan I will not be accepting any talk of stripping the club of titles. That is something we will never accept and everyone at the club shares this view.”

McCoist seems to have misunderstood his negotiating position. He is saying we want to join your club but we’re not going to abide by your rules.

Now the SFA must not impose whatever sanctions it deems are necessary it must also demand a retraction of these statements before it does.

Any other course of action will show it has been complicit with Sevco Scotland in compromising Scottish football in general.

  14. Helsinki are not Ajax. All this “3-5-2 shouldn’t be used in Europe” … hmm. Good players, played in their correct positions, will do well – the formation comes secondary to that.

re. buying. We will go into the Helsinki match with what we have. Trying to knit a new CB into the team with a week to go before a crucial qualifier is jumping with crazy.

  15. I’m positive the SFA spokesman is right now working on a wide-ranging, fact-filled, stinging rebuke to the prospective ‘members’ outrageous outburst…………………..

It’s more overreaction from the usual suspects – who all threw the towel in when we were eight points behind the Huns last season.

Hugh Keevins is a lying wee ratbag,Neil Lennon never said anything of the kind, all he said was he wasn’t bothered about the medals for himself as a player,Shug trying his best to slant it that the ‘ Celtic manager’ wants nothing to do with reassigned titles.

A sneaky, whiney wee rat of man is Keevins who I’m absolutely going to love listening to reporting on hun games in div 3.

for as long as i can remember celtic fans have enjoyed a reputation as being warm, good natured fans who support their team, willing a win but not expecting of one. i am proud of celtic and her fans and our conduct when following the team. we make friends when we travel the way it should be, others would prefer we got pissed and fought in every country we visited.

celtic fc is bigger than the football team’s results on any given day. next time celtic get beat go watch the thia tims preform or if your on holiday anywhere in the world wear your celtic top, see if there is a response, what is that response how is your club viewed. i remember being in the barca superstore years ago and there was a little boy about 7 years old with his father, he seen the celtic top looked right had his father with a massive smile and said pappa celtic, he was so happy smiling ear to ear, there was a fondness my guess is that it will stay with that kid forever, not because celtic are better than barca but because of our fans thery’regood natured behaviour compaire and contrast with a hun in their travels and their empire attitude

I’m fully aware that there is a need for analysis of player performance, tactics and the fiscal policy of those in charge of the club. I have concerns about all three if truth be told.

However, when it comes down to it I’ll still support Celtic despite these issues.

We can’t lay claim to being ‘more than a football team’ and then be so disparaging in our comments when things don’t go well on the park.

Six months ago my house got burgled. The guy got away with my TV, Lap top and some cash.

Thankfully the cops caught the guy. Unfortunately, the reprobate is a local hood and has a really warped view of his own importance.

He appeared at court just last week and his lawyer told the judge: his client would agree to some punishments but only if the judge would negotiate the penalty. His client had also cut his hand whilst being arrested too. This had caused him some discomfort and being unable to support his family during this incapacity had been forced to make a claim for benefit from the Jobcentre.

The lawyer argued that the injury, arrest and loss of “earnings” was punishment enough.

The accused then made an impassioned plea that he’d held my TV, lap-top for six months and his family had come to think they owned them, so under no circumstances would they be returned.

My money has been spent and he’s not able to repay me as he’s on benefits.

    Sums it up.
