“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

Due to finances and lack of opportunity as a result of job restrictions my excursions to foreign shores to see Celtic have been limited.

There is context in the use of the word ’embarrassment’.

Ajax as had been highlighted for a host of different reasons move in a different football stratosphere as was evident in the entire set up, and in football terms Celtic were certainly embarrassed.

From the comments last night I note you didn’t see the game? – Celtic were outclassed, we move on, with Neil Lennon but I won’t be giving up my season ticket.

I know I have said it before, the SFA need to refer all outstanding reports, investigations, and referrals concerning Rangers FC (extant) to either a new Judicial Tribunal or the SFA’s own Disciplinary Committee and suspend either the Club or the proceedings SIne Die. Sevco can then begin to create its’ own history, starting at Brechin.

It was embarrassing. Someone compared it to the PSG humbling, bang on.

The constant movement of the Ajax players into space when they had the ball or towards a Celt when defending was a major difference. That’s not difficult to copy in the mid-term.

Trick is to get better. To do that Celtic need to copy our European opponents as much as we can. Now that’s pie in the sky, we are too far behind the likes of Ajax, Utrecht etc. But it will close the gap.

At this stage I’d settle for the club importing a swathe of coaches to lay the foundations/mentality, in a few years we may be closer.

There’s no point in continuing with coaches drawn from ex-British footballers who at best will be learning themselves.

Tax ‘hidden’ by global super-rich worth $21tn James Henry says his $21tn figure is a conservative estimate

A global super-rich elite had at least $21 trillion (£13tn) hidden in secret tax havens by the end of 2010, according to a major study.

The figure is equivalent to the size of the US and Japanese economies combined.

The Price of Offshore Revisited was written by James Henry, a former chief economist at the consultancy McKinsey, and commissioned by the Tax Justice Network.

He said $21tn is a conservative figure and the true scale could be $32tn.

    A trillion is 1,000 billion.

Mr Henry used data from the Bank of International Settlements, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and national governments.

His study deals only with financial wealth deposited in bank and investment accounts, and not other assets such as property and yachts.

The report comes amid growing public and political concern about tax avoidance and evasion. Some authorities, including in Germany, have even paid for information on alleged tax evaders stolen from banks.

The group that commissioned the report, Tax Justice Network, campaigns against tax havens.

Mr Henry said that the super-rich move money around the globe through an “industrious bevy of professional enablers in private banking, legal, accounting and investment industries.

“The lost tax revenues implied by our estimates is huge. It is large enough to make a significant difference to the finances of many countries.

“From another angle, this study is really good news. The world has just located a huge pile of financial wealth that might be called upon to contribute to the solution of our most pressing global problems.”

The report highlights the impact on the balance sheets of 139 developing countries of money held in tax havens that is put beyond the reach of local tax authorities.

Mr Henry estimates that since the 1970s, the richest citizens of these 139 countries had amassed $7.3tn to $9.3tn of “unrecorded offshore wealth” by 2010.

Private wealth held offshore represents “a huge black hole in the world economy,” Mr Henry said.
