“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

There is surely a difference between bring embarrassed at being CFC fan and bring embarrassed with a particular performance .?

  2. Many top sides in the world play three at the back in fluent playing systems

Nothing wrong with three at the back at all

Don’t know about embarrassing but that BSR has always had a thing about guys from Hamilton.

I think my point was either poorly made or miconstrued and despite my attempt to clarify it ,has been ignored by one poster.

I regret that but my opinion remains the same.

I have not watched any of our pre season games. Likely that it will be a load of cobblers as per ususal. This team we have now seem to thrive on pressure. They only play when the chips are down. When the chips aren’t down and we play Murphy and a few others then whats the point in watching. Nothing at stake other than fitness and learning that most teams on the European mainland are technically superior.

Anyone who watched the Euros would know that England and Ireland were out classed by better football sides. Why would Celtic be any different. Hopefully the demise of Rangers gives us the impetus to put more emphasis on youth. Training boys properly and coaching them.

Can anyone tell me if Celtic can make any money in selling the land at Lennoxtown ? After all theres a ready made training complex at the other side of Glasgow with better facilities which could be purchased at a reasonable price given conditions of ownership and a full size indoor pitch.

Agreed …but the quality of player available can limit the systems that can be employed

The midfield was overrun last night ….and Rogne was stinking .

If you play three at the back then you need pace. If Neil thinks that any of our defenders especially our centre backs possess that qaulity then I am starting to worry. I hope it was a game we did not want.

The task those clever chaps at the SFA have set themselves is to achieve both: a semblance of sporting integrity and the continuation of Rangers in whatever form for the sake of the Rangers pound.

They want both. This is asking the impossible. They have spent the entire pre-season trying to avoid making a decision.

Fat Sally… And the manager added: “It is important to remember we have already had a 10 point deduction from the SPL(Yeah, you voted for it as part of the rules – not a punishment – a condition of being in the SPL), lost our Champions League place for finishing second last season(Er, no Fatty. You lost your European place because your cheating club went into self destruct liquidation and got a three year ban), had a £160,000 fine (Pay your taxes and do your due diligence, ya fat dobber), been refused entry to the SPL(Liquidised ya diddy. How can you?), been relegated to Division Three (Not relegated. You are a new club and need to apply to join.) and lost the majority of our first-team squad (They walked away ya clown.) – yet still the governing body has chosen to impose further sanctions.” (they haven’t even started)

    Cue Hector…

76 GOAL!! With what must be his first touch, Glenn Eadie loops a header into the far corner from Watt’s cross. Celtic 3-0 up.

I won’t have a bad word said against Der Bomber.

He is simply demonstrating what the Ranjurs are aw aboot – in this instance acting the hard man and then greetin like a wean when he has to suffer the consequences of his actions.

A bit like the Hun hordes, who laughed and mocked anyone who suggested their day was coming – and are now attempting the pathetic defence that it’s not their fault.

They want to keep their history but don’t want to take the punishments.

The day we lost against Raith Rovers at Ibrox my mate and I RAN along Paisley Rd West to get away from the whole thing.

I still wasn’t embarrassed to be a Celtic supporter despite my anger etc.

Agreed big Thomas had a stinker

The midfield was badly overran and out manned due to last nights biggest failing playing Forrest Stokes and Hooper, hard to carry 1 player with the opposition are very good when in possession never mind 3

Spain wouldn’t have played two up front in Amsterdam, they would have worked very hard at denying space and time for the opposition on the ball, Celtics biggest failing last night was to give talented players to much space and time on the ball, Forrest, Stokes and Hooper give you next to nothing when the opposition have the ball

Celtic should ask Marc Crosas to ask Barcelona to let our three best 16-year-old midfielders to go and live and train and work at La Masia for a year. Every year. The game is won and lost in the middle of the park. It always was. It always will be.

85 GOAL!!! Watt gets the goal his all-round play deserves as he fastens onto a long ball, rounds the keeper and strokes the ball home. 4-0.

If the Defenders are on their toes and concentrating they can as a unit make up for some individual deficiencies, however that takes time on the training pitch with quality coaching

Celtic First I often ask what the outcome would be if we swapped lads at an early age. How would a Barca lad get on at our youth academy and what would happen if we transplanted all of our youths to a set up in Spain, France etc? In fact, would it be cheaper to take the Celtic youth system abroad and effectively outsource it?

Not so sure it always was, but certainly it is now, work rate with technical excellence in the midfield is vital to success

The system sent out last night was naive at best

I agree with your position re the lack of work from the front three …some of our players just don’t work hard enough

Being stripped of titles won by playing players who were ineligible is not punishment, it is merely a consequence of having fielded ineligible players.

Just has having to forfeit property you have obtained by deception or theft is not punishment.

The punishment is, or should be, over and above the forfeiture.
