“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

Rangers’ SFA membership hopes hanging in the balance

    By Chris McLaughlin

Senior Football Reporter, BBC Scotland A stand-off over media rights and a possible stripping of titles threatens to scupper Rangers’ hopes of Scottish Football Association membership.

The SFA said on Friday that the new Rangers agreed to a transfer embargo in return for a licence to play.

BBC Scotland understands two obstacles remain before a deal can be agreed.

Rangers want the Scottish Premier League to drop their investigation into dual contracts and the SPL wants the SFL to hand over Rangers’ media rights.

There must be a five-way agreement between the SFA, SPL, Scottish Football League, old Rangers and new Rangers before any deal is ratified.

    Rangers crisis explained

•Rangers went into administration owing up to £134m to unsecured creditors and will eventually be liquidated

•As a result its registrations with the Scottish FA and Scottish Premier League were terminated

•Charles Green led a consortium which bought Rangers’ assets for £5.5m

•The former Sheffield United chief executive is reforming Rangers as a new company

•But the ‘newco’ did not get the required votes for re-admittance to the SPL

•Instead, the new Rangers are due to start life in Division Three

The SPL want an independent commission to rule on whether Rangers broke the rules during previous campaigns by paying players with so-called side contracts.

They are due to hand over their findings to that commission on 10 August.

But Rangers fear an independent commission could strip them of titles and believe they have already been sufficiently punished.

The Rangers manager Ally McCoist has already said that he will never accept the stripping of titles.

It is understood the club will not sign up to the agreement with that threat hanging over them.

However, the SPL are digging their heels in over media rights.

It is believed broadcasters are not keen to sign up to an SPL deal without having the rights for Rangers in the Third Division.

For that reason, the SPL want the SFL to hand over the rights for a price.

They say that without the broadcasting deal in place, they cannot pay the SFL their annual £2m settlement fee that was agreed back in 1999 when the top clubs split from the league to form the SPL.

But Rangers and the SFL want to hold onto the rights and all parties are currently at a stand-off.

Talks will continue next week to try to find a solution but several parties involved believe a deal is a long way off.

Rangers are due to play their first match against Brechin in the Ramsdens Cup next weekend but that match cannot go ahead without SFA membership.

“Spelling typos are ok; as demonstarted”

The above is not the correct use of the semicolon. “as demonstrated” is not a sentence and a semicolon requires two sentences, You could have used pause dots instead.

Ha! A grammar debate on CQN……who would have thunk it!

  5. Alasdair MacLean on

    JJ,

Thanks for your help the other night by the way.

Anyway, what I want to know is; what’s the difference between punctuation and grammar?

(Do I get off with the semi-colon this time?)

  6. Is Ally McCoist so forthright and Newco RFC so adamant they want the nvestigation in to dual contracts dropped because they know it won’t just mean the stripping of titles?

If Newco have to accept the crimes and punishments of Oldco (which they really should not be doing if they’d any sense) then they will have to accept that using improperly registered players over such a long period, winning trophies along the way – cheating as we call it – means not just the stripping of those titles but a total ban from football for the club and those associated with the club at that time who had knowledge and responsibilty for what was going on.

Newco needs to decide if they really want to continue to pretend to be Rnagers FC of old. If they do they have to accept the punishments for the crimes of Oldco. If not then they need to stop acting as if they were Oldco and as each stage of the process arises they simpy state – we are a new club starting life in D3, we have rid ourselves of all participants in the EBT scandal and we have no titles to be stripped anyway, so go right ahead and investigate RFC of old, they are nothing to do with Newco.

We wouldn’t expect Spartans to take on Oldco football debts, yet Newco have done so even as they are in D3. Bad move.

But then they are famed for bad moves.

    Off oot. Bye bye.

  9. Alasdair,

No, you do not ” get off” with the semi-colon. You should have used a colon o:-)

  10. Basically, `grammar` is the stucture in writing whilst `punctuation` is an aspect of that structure.

  11. A big thank you to the Celtic support last night in Amsterdam

    They do deserve better

  12. So how quickly must ZombieFC get SFA membership in order to play on Sunday?

24 hours before ko? On the day of the game?

If they are stalling then it suggests to me they don’t actually want to play football this season. McCoist may or may not be in on the plan (or Green is just letting the poor man make a fool of himself), but the longer they stall the less committed to the new season they look.

  13. Baku/Black Isle Celt on

    SydneyTim,

The ranking of 75th place is what it is. My post has nothing to do with where the team needs to be improved. Regardless of how poor you, me or anyone else thinks our defence is we should still comfortably beat Helsinki.

I do agree with you that at least one central defender is top priority, I’m sure the it’s the Managers priority too. I hope he has a number of possible targets.

However, although our defence was shown up against a decent side last night we will not face Ajax or a team of their quality in either the qualifiers or the SPL. I also doubt that any new players would feature in our first qualifier even if signed in the next couple of days unless they clicked quickly with the team in training.

  14. This SFA, SPL, Sevco ballroom dance routine regarding membership and dual contracts etc etc, is getting boring due to a weak ineffective leadership at the SFA, the SFA should have had Sevco dealt with months ago, instead of these partners going round the dance floor looking for someone to lead

  15. The Binman did not come up with the the ‘defiant’, “No Surrender” pash much trumpeted by the national broadcaster………….

Nup…………………, that arrogant bombast comes from his PR minders.

Scoddland’s shame is that it gets so widely communicated apparently without question……

Then again, there are hunners an’ hunners o’ horrible hurtin’ huns ooot there……..

  16. Friendlies are all about fitness and experimenting with formations and players. NOT making snap judgements on how an entire season is going to pan out.

Funny how those who make the least input financially and time wise into supporting Celtic make the most noise…

  17. Rangers FC still has no licence to play football. Their season is due to start in six days. There have been long discussions this week with the SFA about the terms for transferring the membership in the SFA from Rangers Football Club PLC to Sevco Scotland Ltd.

All looked well on Friday when the SFA spoke. However this was immediately contradicted by Mr Murray of Rangers.

    Some thoughts arise…

Had an agreement been reached between Sevco Scotland Ltd and the SFA?

Does Mr Murray face disciplinary action for stating that Rangers FC is being forced “under duress” to accede to the SFA’s demands?

Did Sevco Scotland Ltd and the SFA reach an agreement, express or implied, that Mr Murray could be publicly critical of the “agreement” reached as an effort (a) to gauge his customers’ response or (b) to put pressure on the SPL to step back from having the “dual contract” disciplinary process move forward?

Was Mr Murray making his statement to show that the new owners of Rangers FC had done everything possible to fight their corner, but that the twin bogeymen of the SFA and SPL had them over a barrel as a result of the actions of Messrs David Murray and Whyte?

Was the speed with which Rangers FC responded an indication that, in fact, it knew what was coming?

    http://scotslawthoughts.wordpress.com/2012/07/22/panto-season-rfc-registration-sorted-oh-yes-it-is-sfa-oh-no-its-isnt-sevco-spl/

  18. Campbell Ogilvie is a walking talking example of the Peter Principle. He is also a recipient of the tax free benefits of an EBT. He knew, or should have known, that Rangers players had dual contracts and should have spoken up.

He is compromised, conflicted and contaminated. He is also still in a very highly paid job with benefits and where he appears to produce the sum total of hee-haw.

What does he actually do to deserve the money?

  19. Baka. In may we new that we would only have Rogne and Charlie ( a crisis would be in the making if Wilson came in )

A list Of 20-30 center halfs should have been drawn up and one signed the day transfer window opened

  20. Richard Wilson of The Herald, is clearly allowed to sprout his one sided support of his beloved Rangers/Sevco and his avid love for their glorious super Sally, who can do or say nothing wrong. His articles are something you are more likely to read on ff or some other Govan website. It is so one sided that it even makes Doddsy look smart. Why in such a reasonable paper such as the Herald is he allowed to do this when there is no balance. Week after week I read his column and it is now coming to the point where I am considering cancelling my subscription.

  21. Baku as u said the position 75 would be different in 6 months if we do indeed kick off Europe with no central defence

If we can’t beat the 189th ranked team in Europe, then serious questions will be asked of the players + manager

As far as last night was concerned , I always stay off the blog after a bad result . I like to reflect on the performance before reacting/commenting.

    1. Ajax showed us up big-style. We were 2nd to most balls and where it was required to get stuck in , they did it and we didn’t . BUT , we’ll learn more from that and be less complacent than if we had drawn or won the game . The players realise that they’ve got work to do – better roll their sleeves up.

    2. We’re still a couple of players short of being a very useful side .Freddie and Beram would have made a difference . I’ve long been a Sammi fan , much is he frustrates at times , and think we have more balance when he plays. BUT , last night was an opportunity to experiment formation-wise against strong opposition and it didn’t work. So what ? We learned a ‘chea’ lesson – it didn’t cost us Europe or league points or a cup and we know that , with the current personnel , it’s not for us .

Not forgetting their manager, capped over a hundred times for Holland, played at the highest level, Champions league winner etc etc.

Scotland is a football backwater and has been for years in the coaching and in the standard of play, we can expect this to change when and only when we dismantle the SFA gravy train and re-invent the game.

There is not one world class player playing football in Scotland today.

At Celtic we have only Sammi and Ki who have played at the World Cup, we have a decent squad of players but to expect them to compete in Europe at this point in time is a step to far, in my opinion we are looking at a five year plan to build our strength in Europe, a particularly difficult task considering the state of the game at home and the standard of players we play against week in week out..

  30. Was talking to a Hun when I was on holiday. The Hun fans don’t have a clue about what’s going on and they are just regurgitating the mainstream guff.

This Hun claims to have wanted Division 3 football all along. Starts by saying that it’s probably the fairest outcome. After a couple of shandies he admitted that they feel angry that the clubs “turned against “them.

He then finally admitted that he wants Scottish football to fall apart ASAP without the Huns as this will get them back to the top sooner as they will re-structure the leagues next season and also to teach everyone a lesson.

The great thing about all this is that no matter what the press say the Huns want that and it changes on a daily basis, operation “follow the last instruction” is working well.

  31. I don’t do pre season games anymore, they are gash. Even though Celtic are playing I’ve conditioned myself to fight the craving.

I used to react to them but they have no bearing on the season as a whole and many posters on here, since last night, have pointed out matches and seasons that prove that.

No surprises last night, we are not a great side, we are developing and need 2-3 players as we always seem to do. We need to sell before we buy and I’m sure that’ll happen.

And what is wrong with the fans on the swally and having a laugh? They’re on their holidays.
