“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

  1. Just seen the Keevins tripe – literally just like the real stuff, stinking inerds and guts (was going to include brains but that would be way off the recipe in this case). As these media screwballs increase, I get more convinced of the definitive use for the BIG HOOSE!

Your apparent dislike of using the word embarrassing in describing any Celtic defeat, let alone a Celtic game you didn’t see, is not a basis for my further input.

I’m sure Keevins will be reminded that the Sky contract would not keep the huns in the SPL,obviously briefed by Doncaster to pedal the lie.

    Sorry you feel like that.

My point, which may have been missed, was that in spite of performances I will never be embarrassed to be a Celtic supporter.

I find it strange that you refer to a game that I didn’t see as if I my opinion is less valid.

I think I missed one away game last season, many on here wouldn’t have been to any.

At no point have I ever felt that that didn’t entitle them to an opinion.

    I do that’s why I speak out.

You never saw the game yesterday so you cannot comment on it with any degree of gravity.

It was embarrasing be rest assured. I dont think we got in their 18 yard box. Certainly never had the ball under control in the final 30m. Never had possession for more than a minute. Not even a pot shot at goal.

Ajax second team with more than a handful of youths would give Helsinki a game. A guaranteed win I dont think so.

If these games are only about fitness then I suggest Gullane sands. These games are about money. Celtic should do the decent thing and pick some fans out give them a strip and play them …..could not do any worse than yesterdays embarrassment and the players will not risk injury.

No European football this season is my prediction based on our performances so far this year.

Been a great summer for mosquitos / been a bad summer for mosquito bites . Freakish heat seems to have given them a vicious vigor. Avon Skin So Soft works well at night but seems to be useless against those big evil Tiger mosquitos that fly day and night.. Horrible things.

Experienced, aged 23-26, with a bit of pace, calm under pressure, good distribution, good in the air both defensively and at set-pieces in the opossing penalty area and good in the tackle!

I had forgotten about that clause (in Greene’s offer to buy requiring entry to all Scottis competitions)

It could explain a lot if CG got assurances from SFA that they would be given membership before the bid was presented.

Assurances which were not deliverable but which indicate that keeping Rangers or the illusion alive was of a higher commercial consideration to the SFA than safeguarding the game’s integrity.

This continues to be the case because the only bargainning chip CG has is the SFA fear of the future of Scottish football without Rangers or CG would have been told before now to go forth and multiply. It is the same bargaining chip behind McCoist’s defiance of the laws of football.

I commend to the SFA a book called” Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway” or simply grow a set.

  18. Awe_Naw

I’m sure Neil was surprised, and privately embarrassed especially after 30 minutes.

We can say it, – he can’t, but when he finds his tongue he’ll say Ajax were a class act, and we we’re disappointed in the manner of defeat.

Fat Sally… And the manager added: “It is important to remember we have already had a 10 point deduction from the SPL, lost our Champions League place for finishing second last season, had a £160,000 fine, been refused entry to the SPL, been relegated to Division Three and lost the majority of our first-team squad – yet still the governing body has chosen to impose further sanctions.”

So he describes Sevco’s position and refers to what was done to Rangers, they are then intent on being seen as the same thing. Hi Hector, what’s your view on this……

Why did the club place such importance on winning pre season frendlies under MON ?

I have never taken pre season frendlies seriously since WGS turned Celtic into Alan Shearers testimonial bitch.

Yesterday was the worst performance since Big Tony got gubbed by St Mirren.

Humped by Ajax…could have been 8 some say ……read a number of reports from different sources re the game …nowhere near good enough nor fit enough

Appalling display , we should be much further forward than we are ..appears we may need a CB after all …..and as long as Murphy is in our squad we must be desperately short of a striker

  27. Neil, I could have told you that three at the back doesn’t work against a half-decent side. It troubles me that you didn’t and throught it would. We move on, but for the sake of the wee man, stick to what we know and what the players are comfortable with. Team to start against HJK to start against Norwich or really, there’s no point in the friendly.
