“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

I could go on and on, let’s not criticise someone for spending around 6- 7 million on players (include Hooper, Ledley, Izaguirre, etc.) who are now worth ten times as much.

Ajax 4 – 0 Celtic: Tough European lesson for Lennon’s men

CELTIC were handed a harsh lesson in the Amsterdam ArenA tonight when they were taken apart by Ajax in a pre-season friendly.

Hoops defender Charlie Mulgrew was sent off for deliberate handball on the line in the 66th minute before Daley Blind scored from the resultant spot-kick but the damage had been done long before then.

Neil Lennon’s men were given the runaround in a one-sided first-half which ended with the visitors three goals down.

In the 13th minute Ajax midfielder Siem De Jong drove into the top corner from outside the box giving Parkhead keeper Fraser Forster no chance.

The Dutch side were a class apart but Celtic did not help their cause with some slack defending, which cost them dearly in the 21st minute when striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson tapped the ball into the empty net to make it 2-0.

The visitors looked flat-footed in comparison to slick and pacy Ajax who were in total control, keeping the ball for long spells and threatening any time they approached the Celtic box.

However, when the home side grabbed number three in the 27th minute, moments after De Jong curled a free-kick from 25 yards just past the post, they only had themselves to blame again.

In one of his more casual moments stopper Thomas Rogne got himself caught in possession, allowing Thulani Serero to run through and slide the ball under Forster.

Celtic improved marginally after the break but on the hour mark Forster had to make a good close-range block save from Viktor Fischer who had been set up Sigthorsson in another swift Ajax break.

Mulgrew’s indiscretion came when, with the Parkhead defence all over the place, he instinctively put his hand up on the line to save a Fischer shot but it was all in vain as Blind slammed the penalty past Forster.

Moments later the impressive Jody Lukoki let himself down when he failed to hit the target when he was through against Forster.

A multitude of substitutions for the final 15 minutes did no more than give those players a run-out and the game petered out with Lennon left to try to find some positives ahead of the friendly against Norwich at Celtic Park on Tuesday

I’ve spent a few minutes on Bert Kassies very informative site on all things CL and EL. A few facts for the current season and last season:

Celtic are ranked 75 – well down from the heights of a few years ago.

Ajax are ranked 25 – lower than expected but well above us.

HJK Helsinki are ranked 189 – last year they followed the rangers route of losing both CL round 3 and EL play off. They are currently 7-0 up against KR Reykjavik who are ranked 230.

Last year Celtic played in EL group stages against teams currently ranked 8, 49 and 109. Lost 3-0 on aggregate against A Madrid (8), drew both games 1-1 against Udinese (49) and won 4-1 against Rennes (109).

Summary: our current players last season achieved results in Europe consistent with UEFA rankings.

Conclusion: Ther is no need to panic about the team ranked 189 due to getting gubbed by the team ranked 25.

I hope last night was a wake up call and ensures the team and management do not take anything for granted.

Ajax were fast, fit, good passers and had great movement off the ball. Helsinki are no Ajax, the rankings do not lie.

    MJM

PS former club rangers are 77, Scotlands other CL representative Motherwell are 1 ahead of Helsinki at 188.

He won’t entertain talk about stripped titles let alone them actually doing it. Is he not aware how supremely arrogant this sounds? What’s plan B if it’s eventually decided that they do indeed have titles taken from them for their previous cheating ways? Is that the point where he walks away? Hope so.

Unlike many on here i thought it was embarrassing not qualifying from a Europa group, as were the real football results against Sion, we may be ranked as you say but Celtic are a big club and much more importantly are paying big wages commiserate with a big club, time for some players to step up

    lionroars67,

I agree with you, Celtic are a big club and current ranking of 75 is not good enough.

Achieving results consistent with our ranking should be the minimum requirement and we should always be looking to improve. My point was really about not worrying about Helsinki, the players should be approaching these games with confidence in their own ability.

If we get into the CL groups we will be a pot 4 team, underdogs in every match, these are the games where the players need to make a name for themselves and become heroes, not “glamour” friendlies.

Yes we should not be worried about Helsinki, but! Under Neil our European results are worrying, performances especially away can be disastrous, we have suffered some real thumpings, Helsinki are halfway through their season, have the advantage of playing the away leg first and at home they have the advantage of the Astroturf surface, Celtics first competitive game of the season will be the home leg of this tie, plenty to be worried about……………………………..
