“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

  1. Bada Bing , Token : Agree Lenny is a Celtic Legend but is not the Leader we need to go to the next level. The shoes are several sizes too big for him.

With Sevco out of the SPL the time was right to go and obtain a top european coach and back room staff to develop the first team and squad. I know of one former board member who believes this would be the best approach as well.

Regarding Peter Lawwell I am not a fan. The strategy is not clear or being executed. The waste of transfer funds and wages on a raft of mediocre journeymen means we will struggle against any European opposition.

Not having a centre half when it has been known for 2 seasons is criminal with £15M at stake for the CL and possibly more as the only Scottish team.

Lawwell will ensure the numbers break even, Lenny will toe the party line, the scapegoat will be the late start to the Scottish season (Regan must go now) and we will be reduced to watching SPL dross for the coming season.

If this is the approach Celtic will have only one full house this season against Aberdeen and the crowds will dwindle until next season season tickets are down to the 30k Mark. However Pedro will balance the books , secure the bonus and the title win will be celebrated.

Hope I have not upset the happy clappers with a dose of realism.

The ex OF SPL is not bankrupt.

If the moved to a 12 league excluding the OF they would be playing to a combined crowd of 50K every week.

There is enough money in the SPL to achieve a good standard if the coaching standards were improved and they stopped wasting money on exotic / foreign duds. Aspirations of EPL playing standards would be binned and they could settle down into a high value / high effort nursery league for the majors / Big 5 in the EU.

All that would be missing would be a professional and involved media to sell the game and the players to the domestic and international markets. The Sky situation tells you everything that is wrong in Scotland and Scottish football.

Praecepta, you are correct the game against Spurs was 3-3.

I was at the game in the old North Enclosure and also in the main stand when we hammered Man Utd 4-0.Now that was some game! In that particular match it was reported that Jinky nutmegged Best.I remember well we gubbed them 4-1 but can anybody verify that incident?

  8. If we’d won 4-0 and played brilliantly, like we did at the Wembley cup under TM, we’d probably fall flat on our face in the 1st competitive game. Today is not a yardstick although it will hopefully give us a shake, we need to work harder and focus more.

Just finished watching some of the marvellous games of last season on Setanta.

Lenny produced an amazing turnaround in our fortunes after the Kilmarnock game in spite of ” difficult ” personal circumstances.

    Inspiring team and Tim performances.

Four non-competition games later,Lenny and Lawwell and anyone else who happens to be in the room at the time, must go.

COME ON YOU BOYS IN GREEN.

  11. A lot of constructive comment on here tonight.

Something that has worried me about our Young Team these past to seasons is – mentality (call it – focus/ attention/ or self-discipline).

When the Team are in the ‘groove’ they can be slick and incisive – they can be enthusiastic and sure-of-foot.

Problems seem to arise when they dominate possession – extra passes, going back the way to start again, slowing down play.

Most Continentals show superior instant control – one-touch to take/ control the ball – move with it/ or pass it.

When our players are dominating the game – watch the number of times we take 2 and 3 touches to bring the ball under control. We are often allowed too much time to execute control – it’s easy to get sloppy in the SPL when you have 65-70% of the possession and are unlikely to get caught out.

Unfortunately this mentality has cost us in key games, particularly in Europe where we are often on the back-foot. It needs to be addressed urgently.

I remember that game too, Dalglish got a hatrick,Lennox the other and Pearson for them. They’d just won the FA cup and had their best season in years, Steve Coppell,Gordon Hill, Gogs McQueen and Martin Buchan as i recall. We destroyed them right enough.

  13. !!Bada Bing!! on

Lucky Cody- HH ,it’s going to be a strange season, one for PL to be wary of IMO.The SPL is a given,we can sell a player to bring in the 2 or 3 we need to move the team forward to make an impression in Europe,if we don’t…..

  14. Just checked and we were humiliated by the Ajax reserve team. Only 4 starters in the first half. Some of the second half subs were third stringers.

The gulf in class, skill, pace, creativity, awareness was shocking. We are regressing every year.

A few years ago, the MSL in the US invited us over to play their All Stars. They gubbed us. They won’t ask again. Just as well, because the result would be a total embarrassment. The MSL improves and expands every year, because it is carefully managed and marketed. 30,000 average gates for a new team – meantime, we have 100 or so attending some 3rd division games.

We should try learning from the Dutch and the Americans, because on the basis of our respective 4-0 and 5-1 gubbings (tonight and in Florida) we are being left far behind.

But it would be nice just to have one :(

The wait and see brigade still think we should wait till after beating helsinki before buying Or do they think that might be too late now ?

  21. I met some stalwart huns in the pub today and they are humiliated and frustrated but the vengeance seems to be dieing out – they are actuallly resigned to living life in Div 3 ans seeing what happens (if they are allowed to play).

Society is changing here, the know (deep down) that their club was a sham and they are actually being quite decent about regaining some respect through promotion the tough way – either that or they are going to turn off the game completely (the hard core) IMO.

having watched today’s highlights – I wouldnt be wasting money trying to progress in Europe…SPL is our priority again

  24. All the old favourite slogans are back. Posters we have not heard from during our happy times are heartened to have some misery within which to wallow.

    Sack the Board??

    Sack Lennon??

    Speculate to accumulate??

We’ve played 4 warm up games.

Our season’s calendar will always place us at a disadvantage in qualifying rounds against Europe’s early starters. A team boasting Mjallby, Valgaeran. Lambert, Petrov, Moravcik, Larsson and Sutton lost in Helsinki 12 years ago. Our speculation did not prevent it. Having two rated (in retrospect; they were roundly criticised at the time) Centre Backs did not stop it. Having MON and Henrik did not ensure a win or draw.

Thankfully, we edged the tie on aggregate, though it was a close run thing, to allow us to promptly bomb in the next round to Bordeaux. And that was not a CL competition that was the UEFA, now Europa, Cup.

Money and spending big will not make us big. We need to operate well in cheaper markets. Some of the clubs we are looking enviously at, such as Ajax, manage this.

I’m off to bed now. I did not like today’s result. I am not complacent but I think I have a decent appreciation of where we are at a team. I am less prone to the lighthouse thinking that sees us proclaimed as possible qualifiers for last 16 on the basis of one league title win. I am also less prone to calling it doomsday, every time we have a poor run, especially in warm up games.

A wee sense of proportion would not go amiss.

And, yes, Sydney Tim, I want a new centre back too but I won’t judge him on his price tag.
