SFA and SPL office holders in eye of the storm

682

Somewhere on an upper floor at Hampden SFA and SPL high office holders will be mulling over player contracts submitted by Rangers over the last decade, including for players still registered at the club.

They will compare what they have on file with yesterday’s revelations in The Sun.  As far as the football authorities are concerned, everything will be in good order if Rangers submitted these side contracts, which featured appearance money, to the league and SFA.

But, if the club submitted these contracts to the football authorities, they would have to declare them to the tax authorities as income.

It would be good to hear from some of the very vocal former directors of Rangers on this subject, especially the one currently president of the SFA.

This matter has nothing to do with Our Hero, remember, who is currently drawing fire away from those who put Rangers into danger in the first place, however, Mr Whyte is wholly responsible for the “public censure” issued to Rangers by the Plus Stock Exchange today.  The resultant £50k fine the least of the club’s worries.

I think games are being played regarding liquidation.

I think it is being mooted to try and force out an offer for the club as a going concern.

Liquidation for a football team means that, from memory, the player contracts revert to the SFA / SPL? Don’t know the exact details but this would take a lot of the value out of the TFOD.

Consequently not likely to my mind.

How much would the TFOD squad make in a fire sale in May / June 2012?

Would you able to squeeze £10mill / £15mill out of the current player roster?

Probably looking at £8mill to see them through until the end of the season.

Halve the wage bill and it would be £5mill.

Income would be limited but they should be able to squeeze £1mill out of the ticket sales and then there is the SPL money to look forward to – close to £3mill for 2nd? – and the various half yearly instalments from sponsors / JJB et al.

The figures look tight so I think the administrators are trying to shake out some short term money or even better an offer from the people sniffing about the TFOD.

  2. Just make sure you don’t do anything to disgrace the good name of Celtic FC at Ibroke next month. Please be sure to observe the one minute’s laughter.

Congrats for not mentioning that the enslaved benefits folk will be effectively subsidising whichever corporation they are chosen to skivvy for, thus contributing to corporate profits and preventing the hiring of a waged worker to perform their taxpayer-funded role.

Now to me that’s as much reminiscent of 1970s eastern european command economies as it is of Friedmanesque monetarism, no? At the very least it’s indicative of the ideology-busting hamfisted policy-on-the-hoof days we are living in.

What was submited to the SFA is either a sign of the good faith that Rangers had at the time, particularly before usage dropped, that the EBT scheme was acceptable or that they thought it might be dodgy and witheld the side letters.

If all details were provided it suggests Rangers acted in good if misplaced faith in the propriety of the scheme or simply faith that no questions would be asked.

If part of the contract was withheld it suggests Rangers knew what they were about and it was dodgy.

The difference between details supplied by Rangers and supplied by other clubs one would imagine become clear after a few seasons leading to questions being asked, suggesting side letters were witheld, but maybe the only check was that the paperwork was supplied rather than what did it tell the SFA about Rangers methods.

Only an enquiry will provide answers abd what needs to be done in future.

Oh what a tangled web we weave, When first we practise to deceive!

  5. Folks,

The registration issue will play out only so far and will probably be swept under a liquidated carpet in time. Hope not, but we’ll see.

A wee idea for our possible last trip to ibrokes (apologies in advance if someone else has suggested this before).

We should ask our clubs leaders to offer the huns administrators a few quid (say a million quid – a drop in the ocean of their debt) to purchase all the tickets (50k plus) for our possible last trip there. we could fill the ground with our support and have a wee party. The administrators don’t have to honor their season tickets. The fact that have honored their ST’s so far has surprised many bean counters and lawyers. They would struggle to explain/justify turning down a million quid. Our club could even make a wee profit selling the tickets onto us. I would pay plenty to attend that party. Winning the title there would be nice, but it would be the ultimate humiliation for them having the ground filled by us! We could even agree to pay for the polis who would be happy that no huns would be there. Good idea or not?

If a good idea please email paradise FAO big Peter. Stick the oar in and stir Peter.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the execution of this workfare scheme was the usual farcical mess that results when government tries to do something well-intentioned.

But they are at least trying something positive to tackle youth unemployment, by giving people the chance to gain some experience. The idea behind it is a good one.

At the very worst, the people on these schemes shouldn’t have lost anything from participating in them (except time they could have spent in front of the TV), and at the very best, they might secure a permanent job at the end of it.

I would guess that the majority of participants will at least benefit from keeping in the rhythm of working life: sitting at home day after day can very quickly debilitate a person’s confidence and lead to habits that further damage their chances of getting out of the benefits trap.

And yet people are seriously describing this scheme as slavery, with all sorts of hysterical and vituperative language being hurled at the government, as well as at anybody who defends this scheme.

The old municipal motto of Coatbridge is “laborare est orare”.

I believe those words are still true today.

If you think back to the historic working class struggle for the right to work, it’s astonishing that we’re now faced with self-appointed tribunes of the people campaigning for a right to be idle while collecting benefits. (thumbsup)

Erring on the cautious side the following needs to be taken into account.

The development of the current licencing regime that is codified in UEFA FFP 2010 began in 2007 with the Ivo Belet report on the Future of Professional Football in Europe.

Its intent was to curb some of the issues that were damaging the game.

It has brought a level of rigour and robustness to the scene, which whilst always needed, was absent in the required form before 2010.

That does not mean rules were ignored before then, just that we need to know what rules applied in each licencing year since 2000 to get a true feel for how they were adhered to (or ignored) at the time each licence was approved.

I still suspect skullduggery but knowing how scrupulous the SFA have been in the past when asked why a decision was reached, they will argue on the literal interpretation rather than the underlying principle.

Hateley’s tainted title talk is absolute nonsense

By Murdo MacLeod on Feb 27, 12 06:25 AM in celtic

I DON’T make a habit of disagreeing with my fellow columnists on Record Sport but I can’t let Mark Hateley away with saying Celtic will be accepting a tainted title this season.

That’s absolute nonsense. I sat in an apartment in Florida yesterday and watched Rangers win in far away Inverness, which means they are 20 points behind Celtic in what used to be called the title race.

A quick piece of mental arithmetic would remind you – even dismissing the 10-point deduction Ally McCoist’s side suffered for their club going into administration – the league was galloping towards Celtic Park in any case.

And if Celtic supporters have taken to expressing their delight over that fact then what else were they supposed to do? I was Celtic’s assistant manager under Wim Jansen when the club had to negotiate the toughest championship of all, the one that would determine whether Rangers made history by becoming the first side to win 10-in-a-row.

I had played for Celtic for nine years and was steeped in the Old Firm tradition. I fully understood the implications of a title win for Ibrox and the new players who had come into our dressing room, such as Henrik Larsson, were quickly brought up to speed on what our fans would go through if this happened.

Being the first club to win nine-in-a-row was a proud distinction for Celtic. It would have had an awful impact on the club’s history to have had that distinction become an irrelevance because Rangers had gone one better.

There were supporters who came up to me on day one of my management role to implore me not to let that happen. And there are Celtic fans who tell me 14 years later how much it meant to them to win the title on the last day of the season by beating St Johnstone.

It might have been a nervy day but that only added to the joyous nature of the celebrations.

That’s why nothing will be tainted for the Celtic fans when this championship’s won by Neil Lennon’s team.

They are currently watching the best side in the division and there’s no way anything’s been handed to Celtic. The points deduction imposed on Rangers under SPL regulations has been rendered meaningless – Celtic play a brand of football nobody else can come close to.

And the championship would be made all the sweeter for the fans if their team could win every game up until the point where the title is a mathematical certainty.

Celtic supporters have been on the receiving end of stick for years and they’re going to enjoy this moment for as long as they can.

They will think about the consequences of Rangers’ financial difficulties and whatever effect it might yet have on Scottish football in general, when the time comes. And that will be after their title-winning party.

Celtic could be on the threshold of a treble and their supporters have the right to celebrate their team’s achievements.

Neil’s expressed his sympathy for Ally because fellow managers understand the problems he’s having to endure – while Rangers have to endure fresh revelations on a daily basis.

I’ve already stated I don’t think it would be right for any titles previously won by Rangers to be taken away from them by the football authorities because I don’t believe they were won on the back of any taxation issues.

But I won’t accept this title win is tainted. Rangers had a great start to the season and then you could draw a line under their good form. Celtic went on a super run – and could be four league wins from winning the championship.

No-one can take anything away from a team as good as the one Celtic have at the moment.

And no-one should have sympathy for the men who left Ibrox players worried about job security and fans distressed about their club’s future.
