SFA error in law

1023

The SFA have made an error in interpreting their laws.  They refuse to discipline Calum Butcher as the rules do not allow them to switch a punishment retrospectively.  This is correct, but the rules do allow retrospective action which the referee has not seen.

Craig Thomson saw the Butcher-van Dijk incident inasmuch as he was looking at the players, but didn’t see it well enough to call an infringement.  SFA rules permit retrospective action under these circumstances.

The matter becomes theoretically more complicated by the involvement of the assistant referee, Graham Chambers.  Chambers also saw the incident inasmuch as he was also looking at the players, but he didn’t have a clear understanding of what happened either.  He couldn’t even identify the Dundee United player involved.
The rules on retrospective action do not require a referee to be looking in the opposite direction before the Disciplinary Panel become involved.  A ref can see the incident but not see if sufficiently well to correctly report what happened.  This is the basis under which Nadir Ciftci has been asked to attend the Panel.

Both referees on Sunday saw the incident.  Neither saw it well enough to bear witness to the actions of the two Dundee United players involved.  SFA laws allow both to be examined retrospectively.

Aiden Connolly, at the very least, has a case to answer for diving in the box.  Should the SFA ban Virgil van Dijk while turning a blind eye to Connolly and incorrectly interpreting their own rules on Butcher, and almighty row will kick off on the competency of those who govern our game.

Delighted for Stefan Johansen, who is February’s Player of the Month.  His goal in Perth was a joy and a fitting mark to the development he has achieved this season.

Before Friday’s CQN 11 St Patrick’s Dinner you can win a Celtic jersey signed by the 2008 squad, who won one of the most remarkable titles in our history.  All proceeds go towards building a fourth CQN school kitchen in Malawi, for Mary’s Meals.

Tickets cost £5 each, you know how valuable this is to those kids and families in Malawi.  Buy your ticket here, or click the link at the bottom of that page to buy a book of tickets.

rumor on RM is that Steve May is homesick, and is headed to Sevco … hhhmmmm…. what are they going to pay him with? shirt buttons?

but, more seriously, I thought he looked a decent prospect, and is still young …. could he do the business for Celtic next season?

Craig Thomson and Graham Chambers have been dropped from the Celtic v Dundee United Scottish Cup replay next Wednesday.

*do you remember when we had a spell of good weather and the oul yins would say “aye but we’ll pay for this”.

Then be sure that we will pay for the removal of the officials even though we done no wrong…incompetence and cheating.

I still remember the recent rumour on RM is that Dave King was desperate to pump in £30m to Sevco.

steinreignedsupreme-disciplined for not sending off our most influencial player maybe?

  5. MIT,

He’s a decent, average player…..playing for us, with the chances we create, would look like a world beater at SPL level…..found out in European level tho…..whats the striking solution…..don’t know…..;-((

bb – ha! imagine the punishment they would have gotten if they hadn’t at least managed to red card VVD?!

Once again, there will be no re-construction next season. But keep on banging the drum.

Me thinks PL is trying to get the fans back on side after his comments about Irish Republicism last week.

The fact he agreed with Dungcaster on disagreeing with the strict UEFA liability on the monkeys song sheet just enhances my suspicions of his motives.

  9. mike in toronto on

Lurkin … not sure … he is still young, and averaged about 3 goals every 4 games in Scotland …. and I thought he showed a decent all ’round game whenever I saw him… I think that, if he keeps his head down and works hard, he has the potential to be a good player….

plus, when I saw him (which, admittedly was not a lot), he seemed to work hard, so I thought he might fit into RD’s style …. but I will defer to those who have seen him more than I.

    cheers.

  10. This Thomson, Chambers thing going around not doing the replay, is this punishment for them, or is it so that we do not give them punishment in the replay, if vvd suspended?

  11. MIT,

and therein lies the dilemma for RD…..spend a fortune on an established striker or pluck a relatively unknown & apply his regime/philosophy on him…..

PL has motives for harming Celtic? Tell me I’m reading this wrong, please.

  13. mike in toronto on

Lurkin … not sure that is RD’s dilemma …. he cant spent a fortune on a striker, unless someone gives him the money … .and I dont see us spending a fortune any time soon….

as you say, I think RD could work wonders with a young kid like SM who seems to check the boxes for a RD type of striker… but, I agree … we have to do something … we aint getting enough bang for our buck from our front men, even taking into account RD’s system….

Wee tv preview re Chelsea v PSG.

Chelsea Press Conference – Mourinho spent 5 minutes bumping his gums re how “aggressive ” PSG are and then put on his most serious butter wouldn’t melt face to request that the Officials do their job.

Time to check the PSG Red Card odds.

Whatever the reason – Thomson is out of his depth in the professional game.

I know he is not alone in that respect, and his assistant was totally at fault for the first incident on Sunday, but he is a shocking referee.

His bizarre interpretation of the advantage rule would bring a foul mouth rant from a Trappist Monk.

  16. MIT,

cause lets be honest, an unknown would have to hit the ground running before we started on all the negativity…..whereas an established figure would have our sympathy/understanding giving him some latitude…..;-))

  17. Ronny’s training methods would make Stevie May a superstar

He’s a natural finisher , has good technique and can lead the line as the one up front

After 3 months on Ronny’s regime he would be a 1st pick

Is it just me, or is anyone else suffering from SPOS (Sevco Passing Overload Syndrome)?

I LOVED it when they went into administration, and have enjoyed winding up the zombies since…. but its getting to the point where it is just so pathetic … its almost no fun to see the SS Zombie circling the toilet (while thinking they are on a luxury cruise) …

I’m at the point where I’m ready for MA to come in and pull the plug on sevco and be done with them for good.

Don’t think him trying to cover his own back and look like he’s fighting Celtic’s cause, alludes to harming the club ..

All I’m saying is.. I’m sceptical about his motives .. Cheating officials have never been high on his list of priorities before.

Owen … its like that movie with Haley Joel Osmont … The Sixth Sense … about half way through it, every time Bruce Willis showed up on screen, it was all I could do to not scream at him …’you’re dead, for god’s sake. Just go away!’ kind of get the same feeling now when I see one of the zombies. (either than, or start doing the Monty Python parrot sketch….)

  30. Re Thomson,

I was out for lunch one day (in the last 18 months or so) with a guy who often was one of Thomson’s linesman – He was having a Saturday off, and Thomson was doing a Championship / 1st Division game using new, inexperienced linesmen.

the Lino was exchanging texts with Thomson and one of them said – I’ve told the linesmen not to bother mic’ing up, as I’ll not listen to them anyway.
