SFL, Hearts and the cash cow

790

With former Rangers International director, Charles Green, no longer on the scene, Scottish Football League chief executive, David Longmuir, has had a sudden change of heart. After encouraging member clubs to reject the SPL proposal to merge leagues, yesterday he congratulated clubs who voted for the merger as “reluctant heroes”.

SFL president, Jim Ballantyne, was less pragmatic, “We are joining their [SPL] company, their organisation.  They have swallowed us up. We could use nice words about it, but it is a takeover.”

On this occasion, we concur with Mr Ballantyne, who went on to say, “It will be for others to decide if this step takes us to where we want to go.”

The truth is that while this arrangement will do lots for clubs in the second tier of the game it will fundamentally change nothing, our challenges remain.

News this morning of impending financial doom at Hearts as a result of their lender and major shareholder going into liquidation presents another challenge.  Hearts over-reached what looked like a bizarre attempt to spend money like there was no tomorrow.  Memories of Zadoc the Priest blasting over the PA system at Tynecastle heralding their access to the Champions League qualifiers in 2006 will seem hollow now.

Scottish football has one perfectly solvent cash cow and nearly 40 businesses teetering on the brink.  Send the cash cow off to graze in pastures where it can be fattened in return for writing a cheque big enough to solve the game’s problems.

Willie Wallace will be at the Celtic Store, Argyle St, for late night shopping, from 5.30-7.30 pm tonight (Thursday).  Where you can buy a signed copy of his book and have a chat with the man himself.  Bring a camera.

Immediately after leaving the Celtic Store Willie and Brogan Rogan (and a pile of books) are heading to the Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club for a CQN Question and Answer evening.  Entry costs £2 (all of which is going to our charity causes).  DON’T FORGET YOUR CAMERA!!

Raffle tickets for this fabulous signed Celtic strip cost only £1, you’ve two days left to get a ticket, so fill your boots here.

Tomorrow, while some of us are relaxing in Fife, over a hundred Celtic fans will drive north ahead of a 1254125 Ben Nevis climb and Huddle. Two of our own are then cycling from Fort William back to Glasgow on Sunday…. They need sponsors for their 1254125 campaign. Even if you can’t make it up Ben Nevis you can help out here.

And, if your stuck in Lanarkshire tomorrow there’s a trivia quiz in aid of the Walk Centre, Nakuru, Kenyan, who help children and families of the slum. Quiz takes place at St John The Baptist Church Hall, Uddingston, 7.30 – 11.30.

When something is being done hoping to get a reaction out of you, .. & you can’t prevent it, it is best to act as though what they are doing is what you wanted.

Yeah the wee lad was in a full Ireland kit on Paddy’s day as well.

Cheers for that – have also contacted nafcsc.com and they seem to have a meeting point near the drag as well.

    But will welcome all suggestions!

Having read that about their potential new investor I wonder what attracted him to become a fan even from a distance, I cant imagine he has been to a game when they are in full flow and the reportiore being aired.

  6. Campbell Ogilvie is given too much credit by some on here regarding his influence and (devious) intelligence. The man was a landscape gardener with little in the way of higher education and got a job over 30 years ago with the SFA as a pen pusher. He is your typical jobsworth, who kept his head low and did what he was told and got promotions for doing so.

Anyone who has spoken with him knows he is not the sharpest tool in the box. Nor is he the devil incarnate – once upon a time he used to supply me with tickets for games against them at Ibrox and came across as a decent enough guy. More Peter Sellers as Chance than Blofeld.

9 Fine Irishmen in New York, New York is good – live music every night, and really good ‘real’ grub. Only place I got a good plate of mashed tatties the whole time I was in California! Barman was a Tim from Greenock too :-)

Top tip: Have discovered that it’s cheaper to buy your holiday gear when you arrive at your destination, than pay Ryanair for the hold luggage.

After the Motherwell born millionaire, we now have the Salford raised savant.

  11. I am delighted at the demise of Rangers for all the reasons we have heard so many times before. They were an institution that represented, and indeed as we have seen through Charlotte, promoted bigotry. Hatred was what made them what they were. Hearts on the other hand are not like that and although we have jokingly called them the mini huns they really aren ‘t anything like the dead team.

I don’t like Hearts but that doesn’t mean to say that I want them to disappear. I hope they pull through and indeed I hope they and the other teams in Scotland bar 1 grow and prosper. I like exciting games

    Bada,

Are you suggesting Bobby should paint a moustache on his kid, sit his kid on his shoulders, and wear a long trench coat before going to the bar?…….if so, I agree.

I assume you don’t live in Edinburgh. Majority of Hearts fans are every bit like their Glaswegian cousins.

He sounds like the ideal guy for the job, does what he’s told and gets looked after for doing so. I’m sure he is a nice bloke, however that suggests easy meat for the masonic cabal to manipulate,

No offence intended mate, I’m sure you posted with good intentions.

    b2k,

    I have to disagree buddy.

Maybe as a club Hearts aren’t as institutionally bigoted as the Huns were but a fair majority of their support certainly are.

We called them the mini-Huns for a reason.

Any idea what the licensing rules are regarding kids in the bars?

I know they can’t go into casinos, or to be more pedantic, they are not allowed to stand still (I believe there are walkways through them that kids are allowed to use)

  18. Livibhoy I do live in Edinburgh and have friends and in laws who are Hearts fans. I come from Glasgow though and know only too well what many Rangers fans were like.

In the Record article it refers to his Galway family background which mad me smile.

TBH though, there is nothing in that catholic Herald article that strikes me as an issue for me or would prevent me from wanting him as an investor in us.

Seems to have some principles and loads of determination. In fact, he will almost be a waste over Govan way!

Have you booked any trips or shows from here or are you waiting till you get there?

  22. The Moon Bhoys – no offence, that is exactly what I meant. He is much more puppet than puppet master. It is convenient to have people like him who don’t ask questions in these kinds of jobs.

Nothing booked yet – fly into Phoenix on 23 June, Flagstaff / Grand Canyon 28-30 Jun, then Vegas 30th to the 3rd I think. Have been looking online and at their own Groupon deals etc but never been before so wouldn’t want to commit to booking shows at this stage.

Will just wait till we get there and see what takes our fancy.

    What about you?

  25. Uncle Fester that fact that Hearts as an institution is not bigoted is a major difference between them and the dead team.

It is a bit out the blue, and handy that he has talked to the Record about it but after reading what we have done in Charlotte’s leaks, nothing comes as a surprise in this game!!

We must mix in different circles. I know a few decent hearts fans but the majority are just as bad as Rangers fans and have a hatred for all things Celtic.
