Shakhter boss fears Samaras, will defend

378

Shakhter Karagandy manager, Viktor Kumykov, spoke to the media yesterday, and again this morning, ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League play-off first leg game against Celtic.

“Some of the players who played on Friday night will not make the starting line-up against Celtic but we have a limited squad so I cannot rotate too much.

“Celtic have a high calibre across their squad of around 20 players, they can rotate players without dropping standards.  Whoever we face will be difficult.

“Their most dangerous players are the striker Samaras and wingers Forrest and Commons.

“We will attack but we will keep things tight at the back.  The most important thing about a home game is not to concede.  Celtic are a quality team but we are going to stand up to them with our best game.  We have our plans.

“I said a few times that it’s going to be tough game for us. We are new in the Champions League, Celtic have lots of experience in games in Europe, they even won this tournament. But this does not mean that we are going to be taking a beating. We will do our best, will give our full strength to achieve a good result.

“We watched Celtic in last season’s Champions League, and against Liverpool.  They are stronger than us but football is a game where the strongest don’t always win.  They play a physical game, it will be hard playing against them.

“Unfortunately Toktar Schangyalyschbai and Mikhail Lunin will both miss the game through injury.

“We would like a full stadium, the crowd is going to be an important factor for us.

“We have achieved our main target, Europa League qualification, so the pressure is off us.  We can take a risk in our play.”

Captain, Andrey Finonchenko, added, “Our dreams started with the games against BATE, few imagined we could beat them.  The results against BATE and Skernderbeu have given us faith.  We will do our best tomorrow.”

Stories of the ritualistic slaughter of a ram inside the Astana Arena this morning are true. No medieval stone unturned.

  1. We have standards as a football club that set us apart.

    Griffiths doesn’t meet those standards.

Posted a couple of weeks ago that squad strengthening for qualifiers should have been done in January.

  4. For any fellow Irish based lads, one of the bhoys on the Irish list has just pointed out to me that 3e are showing the game live tomorrow. Coverage starts at 3.55pm. Trevor “thats good play” Welch on commenatary with Brian Kerr on analysis. Haven’t got ITV4 at home so that’s good news. Will have to bail outta work early tomorrow.

I agree. Wouldn’t touch Griffiths. He is no Messi. If he was world class it may be worth the risk. He is too young and stupid though.

I wouldn’t put them in the same category personally.

  8. On the striker debate would signing one for the start of training really make that big a difference?

We will need one if we qualify for the group stages to give a good account of ourselves and excite fans during SPL games but on timing of signing for the qualifying games should we not have sold Hooper in the winter xfer window and got a replacement then and would it have been any easier at that point.

The question is how far sighted do we need to be and what is the trade off between the present and the future?

  9. Thank goodness we never got rid of Wanyama, Hooper and Wilson, or else I’d have been really worried about this game.

I do have the debt figures somewhere but the amount of debt is not my point, my point is that we have a team that on paper should romp the league whether we buy a striker of not… yes? No?

Assuming you agree on the above and you agree that we have money enough to strengthen and we are not bursting a gut to do so, then what does that tell you about the ambitions of our Club?

Anyone reckon that as the transfer window is going on that we will go back for Doyle? Didn’t realise he was on £40k a week though. He would need to negotiate a pay off and accept lower wages.

Is the CL a big enough carrot to entice him?

Is he the type of player we need? I reckon Doyle and another striker would be good business.

Can the Dutch Bhoy play through the middle? I had read an article where he had hinted at that after signing.

I would also like to see Commons tried through the middle in the meantime. A poster mentioned this earlier. I have been talking about this a few weeks with my old man. Commons probably has the best shot out of any of our forward players. Hits the target regulalry. If we have learned anything from the Scotland v England match it’s that no matter how good the keeper is if you hit it hard enough on target it can go in. Might be worth a shout for tomorrow to play Kris up and Samaras just off him.

Well I still believe a good coach can improve players in a variety of positions.

That was slap bang during the sale of Juve tickets, and wasn’t really an option even although it transpired neither Gary Hooper *nor anybody else* – laid a glove on Juventus.

It’s closer to the truth that with Balde in for cover, they hoped Norwich or whoever, would hold off, until after the three qualifiers were over.

The realistic date is now 02/09/13 – and if there’s no GH impersonator cyber Celtic will unleash hell.

  15. Big Balde has got to start up front with Sammy on the left of the midfield and commons on the right.

Big centre halfs are not used to being bullied by big strikers. He would gain us position high up the field and have someone to aim at for crosses and the inevitable punts.

Midfield 3 of Ledley Mulgrew and brown.

Back 4 of Lustig Mouyokolo Van Dijk Izzy

    Foster in goals

Good balance of steel and height with enough creativity to get the away goal.

Forrest to come on for last 30 mins to scare with his pace.

  16. Of course it would be ideal to have replacement’s lined up when you sell but sometimes you cannot help it.

I still think we have enough to get to the group stage and there will be time for a striker.

A Celtic spokesman said: “Our talks with Juninho have been very positive but he has returned to Middlesbrough to sort something out.”

The item still outstanding, according to Scottish sources, is that Juninho wants a golden handshake from Boro to offset a potential drop in wages at Celtic.

The club hope that this matter can be sorted out quickly so that Celtic boss Martin O’Neill can unveil Juninho at Parkhead tomorrow.

Much as I am annoyed with the developments in this transfer window … I can’t say I’m surprised

Selling players efficiently purchasing with delay

Seems to be what we do

Also gambling on CL qualification before further spending is what we do too

Worked last season …. I only hope it works this

As for the notion of team building … A disingenuous suggestion for CFC at present

  20. “Meanwhile, Heerenveen have offered Finnbogason a bumper new contract.”

clunks – hard to argue with your selection, but Izzy is the weak link at the back and I’d go with Matthews at LB instead. Slight concern over Virgil’s lack of match fitness too.

I’ve always been critical Of Izzy’s defensive qualities. However, I was really impressed with him at Pittodrie and I’d always play a left footer at left back.

  27. tommytwiststommyturns supporting Wee Oscar on

HT – anyone watching our games would know to play balls in behind Izzy due to his positional indiscipline and also launch long diagonals into his area at set-pieces.

We could play Charlie at LB instead and go with Kayay or Ambrose in midfield….?!
