Skewed reporting of ticket ‘dispute’

118

Context is all, and the context for reporting of the ticket ‘dispute’ for our Newco game on the 30th was significantly skewed.  In brief:

After humiliating defeats by Celtic at Ibrox, Newco cut Celtic ticket numbers by 90%.  This led to 700 Celtic fans in a corner of the stadium with bottles and other missiles thrown at them.  I’ve been there and it is incredible this option passed Health and Safety rules.

Celtic initially reciprocated the 700 tickets arrangement before drawing a line: we have safe arrangements for visiting fans or nothing at all.  Celtic want a return of 7,000 visiting fans, Newco want only 700.

An SPFL subcommittee agreed that home clubs had a duty to provide a “reasonable” number of tickets for visiting fans but that arrangements should be SAFE AND RECIPROCATED.

Celtic issued a statement highlighting the subcommittees assertion of fan safety, Newco’s statement talked about a reasonable number of visiting fans, without reference to safety conditions on that requirement.

Guess how the story was reported?  Amazingly, Newco won the case but were forced to concede.  That was actually reported in Scotland yesterday.  It bothers me more than it surprises me.

We all know fan safety is paramount and it is either impossible or expensive for Newco to guarantee the behaviour of fans sitting adjacent to the corner they previously put Celtic fans.  We also know denying visiting fans access detracts from the game.  We can further agree (with the SPFL) that arrangements should be reciprocal.

The solution is to revert to 7,000 visiting fans but this cannot happen without Newco relocating their ultras group, whom they are loathed to take on.  Alternatively, we lock out away fans, or run the safety gauntlet at Ibrox until a tragedy occurs.  Safety.  Ibrox.  I know!

  1. Sat on a bus back from Glasgow to St Andrews. They are no believing yet. That is for sure. Hopeful and definitely sensing our fans are in revolt but not quite believing yet.

It os ours to lose. I expect mayb on here would want that to show how clever they are and make them feel better about their inadequacies but I do think most real Celtic fans want us to win despite the bogey man and their sad bitterness.

Great post! Think I saw Kenny play right half at Celtic Park one time, when Bobby Murdoch was out injured and there is no doubt he could have a brilliant player in that position. Or wide right, or wide left as at Liverpool, inside left or right. Amazing the number of goals he did score over his career without being an out and out centre forward. Being two footed always helps of course, still amazes me how many players rely on just the one, limiting themselves to what they are capable of. Kenny was a briliiant all round player, could pass and tackle too, hard as nails. And surrounded by top class players does not hurt. Even saw him help Liverpool win their first double in 1986, Celtic didn’t make the Scottish Cup final that day, Kenny was player manager, still a great player at thirty five!

    Enjoy your few months.

It’s been a long time coming.

6 title wins despite a corrupt governance in 21 years is quite a thing.

Weirdly Celtic fans seem to think 21 wins in a similar period is less good.

Maybe reflect on that and think about where that puts your loyal followers in the scheme of things.

I sense it is not at the front of any bus.

MSM in full ‘the Rainjurz are comin’ mode . And for once , it’s factual reportage . Unless we waken up pronto and do something about it . We could and should have topped this league wire to wire .

  6. B78- again being deceptive in replies,I asked you the other day,you said Ange had ‘worked with ‘ Mark Lawwell before, can you let us know in what capacity?

Real Celtic fans went to St Aloysius and vote Tory. Got it.

In yer wet dreams Mr Sanctimony..

Talking of wet dreams, Mr 5WA/ keep the Okd Firm competitive by filling our squad with absolute dross, will have been beside himself with events at Ibrox. An early red card AND a late pen. Nothing being left to chance.

What hope have you got with enemies within and without?

  9. Good morning from a stormy Garngad (sounds like a cooncil porn star).

This league might not even come down to games betweens us v thems as the Mib are showing that cannot be allowed.

I cannot see them being allowed to drop points so even if we beat them we would need to win every game from now until seasons end.

I cannot see our current squad doing that.

Thats how we need at least 3 maybe 4 quality 1st team ready signings about 7, 8 or 9 million each in January, in most cases you buy what you pay for, buy cheap buy twice in all that. Even then it might be too late.

Thank you Celtic board, sack them all for negligence (a vote of no confidence at AGM)

B78 maybe yo could ask Pedro or Markie bhoy their thoughts….on second thoughts dont bother.

Oh and get the GB back in pronto the place is like a morgue anyone that cannot see that is sleeping at the wheel.

    SACK THE BOARD

  10. Real Celtic fans can go to any school. I’m sure there are lots of real Celtic fans who vote Tory.

We are a welcoming broad church open to all.

Personally I I think the Scottish and UK governments have both dramatically failed the people and I look forward to getting shot of both. However that is for another day.

I vividly remember the old chestnut ” What school did you go to ” ? It was the epitome of the hun .

    We don’t need that.

As for new first team ready players. I think that just got much harder after the Scottish budget.

I am unsure if players renumeration is based on Net or Gross figures, but the income tax differential for these top earners is now massive. Someone has to pay, the player or the club.

Any incentive to attract top players is now much more expensive than a few miles down the road in England. The tax differential is massive.

As this is a Celtic blog I am stating that incentivisation of the type of first team ready players has just got much more difficult. I make no comment on the pros or cons of the Scottish budget itself.

I see signs that many Celtic supporters have a wee bit of disquiet about reaction last week.

I feel the players, manager and fans will all respond on Saturday.

We all share the one goal, to win the league and put the huns back in their box.

    HH, the journey continues.

  11. Greenpinata,

Agree we all need to unite as we need to win the next 4 games or it will be civil war.

However when we have Lawwell already briefing against the manager (as in the past) aided and abetted by P67 this creates greater division.

Lawwell sees Celtic as his and will fight to keep his boys there no matter what damage they are doing to the club. Its a conflict of interest with his son Mark Lawwell and his appointment was unethical.

Will Lawwell call a truce with the manager and let him do his job without the added distraction of watching his back. Doubt it as the family future at Celtic is at stake. That is the ultimate reality with nepotism.

We can only take it a game at time and do our best —- the reckoning for the Lawwell’s will come.

  12. Pis#ed off watching the MSM this morning. Having a giraffe about Celtic supporters booing Santa’ last week and the ” Happy huns: cheering him to the rafters last night.😡

OK, we all know the Gringe was green, but we also know he had a Happy ending 😆

Bottom line :-“It’s because I’m green, isn’t it?” — The Grinch.

COYBIG, the journey resumes on Saturday.

  13. Burnley78,

Think you are out of touch mate. Read the wider Celtic room , the Lawwell’s are done. Only a matter of time.

The current situation epitomises why Lawwell should never have been made chairman and place his boy as Head of Recruitment. The club was on an upward trajectory until Lawwell returned.

The staff in any organisation view how a Board and an Executive behave whether its FTSE 10, FTSE250 or a 100mil AIM listed company. The nepotism in a small company such as Celtic is damaging especially when it is so glaringly wrong.

We all know DD calls the shots and leaves the exec team to execute. The Board is lightweight compared to what Fergus had. The last Board appointment an Apple sales a guy with no extensive biz experience. MN is a nice guy a friend informs me , but a CEO not in a million years. The exec team — OMG cringeworthy.

Removing Lawwell is the most impactful move the club can make. It will not be anywhere near enough to transform Celtic. The damage being done at the moment could set us back years.

  14. What I find a bit odd with Lawell coming back as chairman is that it would put all his baggage on his son. I know if I was in a similar situation I would not want to put my son in that position . Whether his son is up to the task is another matter.

  15. Read All About It!

News just in from the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Justice.

Said Chamber has ruled, (and I have not yet read the exact wording) that UEFA acted against European Competition Law in blocking the creation of the European Super League. The Court therefore has ruled in favour of the ESL.

    Read all about it!

  16. Apparently Barcelona FC have already tweeted something to the effect that “The Monopoly is over!”

  17. Celtic Mac, not read the details yet but this could be as significant as Bosman for the future of the game

  18. I can accept poor seasons. I think it possibly more likely than not that we will lose the league this season to an extremely poor opponent. I hope to God that I’m wrong and that we win the next 4 games and go again after the break. However with displays like we’ve seen in recent weeks, that seems unlikely to me.

Regarding though, like that awful Sunday in Fir Park, you dust down and go again. Losing and feelings of disappointment come along from time to time.

What really boils my blood is the rampant nepotism on display at Celtic Park. Nick Hammond was let go after a couple of non productive transfer windows and here we are, about to go in to a fourth transfer window with a head of recruitment that has a strike rate of 1 in 20 odd over 3 windows.

It’s infuriating. Mark Lawwell should be gone. Dom McKay was punted after 4 months, I guarantee you, Dom McKay did not waste the best part of £25 million during his stint.

Accountability needs to be seen in action. Mark Lawwell should be emptying his desk.

The verdict has now been published, as ‘Press Release No. 2023’ on the EU Court of Justice official site (from Luxembourg). Tend to agree with you that the implications of this decision, which applies to both UEFA and FIFA will be huge (EPL/Bosman etc) if not immediately, then in due course. No doubt Paul67 will be addressing the story later on today. Massive victory for the idea of the ESL and for the Clubs, (Real Madrid, Barca et al) who took the case to Luxembourg.

  20. dessybhoy

The decision applies to UEFA (and FIFA) which was found “to be abusing a dominant position” etc.

As I understand it all 55 members of UEFA will be impacted whether they are in the EU (27 members) or not.

Camusbhoy mentioned the Bosman Ruling (1995), it was also made by the European Court of Justice.

Yes, you read that correctly. The 2nd highest in the world for top footballers.

With that stastictic, it makes attracting first team ready players so much more difficult and much more expensive.

Agree that it should be the leader today on the blog, listening to some of the coverage the idea of 4 divisions with promotion and relegation will appeal to many.

The EPL might find out why so many clubs are owned by American interests and the Middle East as they have no loyalty to the local game.

  24. Anyone else notice that when bewco are struggling or only one goal in front they get a penalty to alleviate squeaky bum .God were up against it .

  25. Dexter P. Bampot on

People ought not be getting too excited about the ESL ruling at the ECJ.

One of 2 things will now happen-

    1. Nothing much changes as the big Euro clubs except Barca and Madrid decide to reflect fans’ opposition to the ESL

    2. The ESL momentum restarts and ultimately opposition of greedy clubs disappears notwithstanding fans’ views. Promises of further investment by clubs, cheaper TV deals etc. are dangled and the fans’ opposition wanes.

I think no. 2 is more likely and that even if Celtic get an invitation to the table, the initial excitement of involvement will be banished by the increasing commercialisation of the game, increasing wages to already overpaid players.

FIFA and UEFA’s shameless and immoral chasing of money from corporations and dodgy states has come back to bite them.

There is a morality vacuum in the beautiful game and the race to the bottom of the pit will now be accelerated.

  26. reoccuring theme ,we blow the 10 in a row season ,when we could have finished them once and for all ,but we collapsed like a pack of cards,

now we are blowing this season when the rewards for winning the title this season are enormous ,think somebody needs the dosh more than us as we have £72m in the bank , once again it looks like we are collapsing like a pack of cards.

  27. Siempre Celtic (formerly Traditionalist88) on

Was totally against this in 2021, not sure what to think right now… potentially even bigger than Bosman IMO. Full restructure of European game…

‘The plans for a new league were thrown out in April 2021, but look set to return with European heavyweights Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus set to spearhead the overhauled tournament which could replace the Champions League. And Reichart floated a plan to the likes of Celtic last week that could help “future proof” the Hoops as part of a fresh proposal.

Speaking ahead of the judgement Reichart said: “Surely it cannot be that the (UEFA) monopoly is okay and the conventions of Europe do not apply to sport? If we have a licence to compete then we then have to convince clubs that our alternative model is better for their future.

“Clubs can then run a European league themselves as the Premier League and Bundesliga already do nationally. We hope to create a European Super League with 60 to 80 clubs, which means you also offer a perspective to big clubs from small leagues like, for example, Celtic, with guaranteed income. That makes clubs future-proof.”

Our board are rancid to the core.
