So-called spivs only ones to cough up again

1057

It appears that the so-called spivs are once again the only people likely to put their hands in their pockets to fund the coming season’s shortfall at Newco Rangers.  There has been a campaign for much of this year to drive the club into the gutter, although on this occasion no one has accused Celtic fans, the SFA, HMRC or various imaginary enemies of acting in an underhand manner.  These moves were all the work of formerly loyal Rangers men, who wanted ownership of Newco on the cheap, or some kind of influence thereafter.

The ‘spivs’ have not been intimidated or been blackmailed into handing over the club to hostile forces.  Instead they are prepared to invest again, stay the course and see a return on their money.

‘Spivs’ is an unnecessarily pejorative term but if money comes in from the variety of hedge funds and offshore entities it will not be a gift.  Neither was the initial investment of £5.5m, or the subsequent monies raised at the IPO.

It’s too late to complain about who owns the club, or that a collection on wealthy fans could have bought the assets of Rangers on the cheap when Charles Green stepped in.  Campaigns to undermine the club will not bring about a dramatic change, they will only weaken an already painfully weak entity.

Two years ago someone inside the game told me ‘the Rangers you know are dead, whether they phoenix or not.’  The outfit which exists now will forever be a bit-part player, which even Dave King recognises is an untenable commercial proposition.

Remember, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday. Take a camera.
And before that, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday. Expect anecdote overload.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

  1. I would like trident out of Scotland. A yes vote is a democratic challenge to the nuclear debate.Everything about it.

In this day and age its cost contrasted with an economy that has food banks.

It challenges Uk as a geo political player and the money set aside and assumed as a given

    Yes

  2. Hey jimmyqunnsbits defo not directed at you. There is nothing wrong with wanting independence even if others disagree. But we have had a Nat led campaign of what I would call reverse bullying. Finally we have all had enough because it has become obvious who is doing the bullying.

Perhaps they will desist now and we can have a debate of merit (but I doubt it) after all fear and intimidation is clearly the new democracy on Scotland. Justafans classic compulsorary voting really made me laugh.

You will vote and vote the way you are told……

Anybody who thinks an independent Scotland vote with Salmond as head if state won’t lead to him being carried down the Royal Mile on the shoulders of his MP’s and us having to suffer that wee oaf for another five years is deludin

    God preserve us.

How often does it have to be spelled out that a Yes vote is not a vote for Alex Salmond?

I was watching the poor quality video of Wallace doing his stand up routine in Ontario in front of what sounded like an unappreciative audience. I’m afflicted by being a Pisces and I made the following observations.

    The tone of his voice

    His body language

    the eyes.

Everything said ” I hate being here” “Not much further now” “I’ll soon be for the off”

” these north American ones are no better than they are at that other place.

“Must remind myself to just read the notes” “They told me it doesn’t matter if they believe you” “I’ll be at the airport soon” “mustn’t forget the duty free” “Geez its warm in here”. “blah blah blah” ( I hear France is nice this time of year).

  8. The Tories float a proposal to draft a Bill to protect have-a-go heroes from being sued and then, a couple of days later, the Defence Minister, Anna Soubry, is all over the papers for breaking up a fight in a Pret-a-Manger in Westminster.

No wonder we are cynical about politicians.

Ms. Soubry told The Sun, which claims to be a newspaper,

“I shouted at the drunk guy, ‘stop it, stop it now’. They often listen to women because they don’t expect it.

“It was only afterwards that I thought perhaps that wasn’t the brightest thing to do.”

Aye Right?? I’m still struggling with the logic behind “They often listen to women because they don’t expect it.”

Can any of our correspondents from The Planet Female enlighten me on this one? Preferably without shouting.

Hand on heart, in the event of a NO vote, do you think that there is any chance of Cameron, ot one of his tribe not being Prime Minister.

The odds are on Miliband as next PM. The Tories managed only 36% of the vote in 2010 (the fourth consecutive UK general election they have failed to win). Logic says they will get less next time.

On top of that, the electoral system is currently biased towards Labour. On some calculations, Labour need only 35% of the vote to gain a majority of one. The Tories will need to break 40% to achieve that.

It’ll either be a Labour government with a small majority, or Labour as biggest party (possibly governing as minority or as coalition with the LibDems, if they still exist).

Voting YES does not mean you have to support the SNP and its white paper.

Voting YES provides independence and then the powers to make change possible…

I swore I would not comment on this blog about politics as first and foremost I like to use this blog for reading and contributing to football matters.

Firstly, I agree with MWD this place is boring at the moment, why, I don’t know, could be close season blues if I can use that descriptor.

Secondly, having read your post and in particular your first two sentences you have given me food for thought, particularly the bit…if you vote Yes does not have to support SNP…

I think I need to read the white paper and do more research as I have not given serious thought to how I will vote. And vote I will as my Forefathers (spl) fought for the right to vote.

My research thus far informs me that the next Scottish Parliament is due by or on 5th May 2016. Not long in my opinion to have to put up with the Scottish Government of the day, which as we all know is SNP. The Scottish Electorate will then decide if they want a SNP Government once again or for another Party or dare I say Parties to govern us. A small price to pay to suffer the SNP Government if that’s what the Scottish people want.

Your one post has definitely given me the kick up the backside I needed. Whilst still undecided I have spoken with some mates who are died in the wool Celtic Mhen who are voting Yes and they do not support SNP. They have tried to communicate their reasons but I am usually to drunk by the time the debate gets around to politics.

MWD, not quite an aye yet but a definite maybe from me.

    Keep the Faith!

Just got my copy of TG’s book; priced £19:67… Got me to thinking how are the profits, costs etc., divided re… Would appreciate if any of the business brains involved cared enough to divulge/elucidate such… Just to reassure interested parties that the author(s) is/are getting ‘a wee bit back’ so to speak… If requested info is confidential then heyho say so and give the reasons why eh! Cheers… TBM…

  19. I think the SFA should find out who is trying to raise money – ‘Rangers’ as the SFA regard them, or a holding company

  20. It’s all went quiet regarding the Craig Gordon singing . Ronny maybe put a stop to it ?

  21. MadMitch and Ernie Lynch from earlier on – wouldn’t like you to think I was ignoring your responses to me!

Suffice to say, I don’t think we’ll see eye to eye but I take on board the ‘little scotlander’/ tartan tory thing. However, voting Yes isn’t voting SNP.

Nice chatting. Ernie – I suspect you’ll be glad when it’s all over. You expend a lot of energy on it.

Nobody is more critical than me of David Murray and the damage he did to Scottish Football.

However, it worth remembering that Fergus shared his views on the folly of spending money on Hampden.

    ………………………………….

Sshhhhhhh. Don’t spoil a good rant by introducing some facts.
