So-called spivs only ones to cough up again

1057

It appears that the so-called spivs are once again the only people likely to put their hands in their pockets to fund the coming season’s shortfall at Newco Rangers.  There has been a campaign for much of this year to drive the club into the gutter, although on this occasion no one has accused Celtic fans, the SFA, HMRC or various imaginary enemies of acting in an underhand manner.  These moves were all the work of formerly loyal Rangers men, who wanted ownership of Newco on the cheap, or some kind of influence thereafter.

The ‘spivs’ have not been intimidated or been blackmailed into handing over the club to hostile forces.  Instead they are prepared to invest again, stay the course and see a return on their money.

‘Spivs’ is an unnecessarily pejorative term but if money comes in from the variety of hedge funds and offshore entities it will not be a gift.  Neither was the initial investment of £5.5m, or the subsequent monies raised at the IPO.

It’s too late to complain about who owns the club, or that a collection on wealthy fans could have bought the assets of Rangers on the cheap when Charles Green stepped in.  Campaigns to undermine the club will not bring about a dramatic change, they will only weaken an already painfully weak entity.

Two years ago someone inside the game told me ‘the Rangers you know are dead, whether they phoenix or not.’  The outfit which exists now will forever be a bit-part player, which even Dave King recognises is an untenable commercial proposition.

Remember, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday. Take a camera.
And before that, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday. Expect anecdote overload.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Jim Mather may have his opinion but there are many in the SNP who would want otherwise. Hoepfully new alliances of the progressive left within Scotland could break down party barriers and campaign on the issues that will drive us forward to a better society.

No matter what it was called, Wee Eck’s document was not a white paper.

It was a Tartan Tory manifesto with all the puss and wind you would expect.

Wee Eck or rather BS has bought the Scottish media lock stock and barrel.

The SH is as close to a propaganda sheet as it is possible to get.

Every element of the “Two tiddlers looking for a puddle” campaign is straight off the grid.

It is so stale, false and scripted that it is an affront to a thinking electorate.

In a PR voting system, the chances of us again having a government of outright control is marginal.

The only reason that the present state of affairs exists, is because the Scottish Labour Party heavily influenced by Westminster snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at the last Holyrood elections.

The Scottish parliament voting system is seriously flawed.

Wee Eck got his landslide with 45% of the vote.

That is 45% of a turnout significantly less than the 2010 GE turnout.

Dave + Clegg got more votes in 2010 than wee Eck got in 2011.

All he did — as you say — was Hoover up the distressed gentle folk who had voted LD.

  15. JimmyQuinnsBits on

As somebody who was a no, and is now undecided, I’m completely hacked off at the tactics from both sides – should’ve known that this was always going to get dirty.

Heard John Reid on the radio today re the JK Rowling issue and he was all I detest about a politician, almost explicit in stating that the abuse of JK and Clare Lally was orchestrated from Salmond and his advisor – horseshit. It would be political suicide and, whatever else Salmond is, he’s no political fool.

  16. JQB @ 19.50

The Tartan Tories run a very effective astro turf media campaign.

Once a target has been acquired it is volley posting to drown out the other side.

  18. So as well as creating a Socialist Paradise on our fabulous oil wealth, creating an entrepreneurial paradise by cutting corportation tax, suppressing the Status Quo turgid boogie sound by adding bagpipes, curing Diarrhoea, and establishing a monarchic republic, a Yes vote will also introduce democracy for the first time it has been seen North of the Tweed.

I can certainly hear squealing but I remain sceptical that there is a real live pig contained within the confines of that poke.

Salmond and his spad knew exactly what the cybernats would do.

Salmond reminds me of Paisley and Enoch Powell. He winds up the nutters knowing what they’ll do and then claims to be surprised by the outcome.

  20. JimmyQuinnsBits on

    Madmitch,

I know, I’ve seen it – that’s one of the tactics from “Yes” side that cracks me up… how is this supposed to work in terms of persuading don’t knows to vote “yes”? How does abuse of “no” supporters, and the associated press coverage, do anything else other than aid the “no” vote – it doesn’t make sense?

But the “Better Together” campaign? Bloody hell, it’s like they’re both trying to lose.

  21. Wow.

Today has been a watershed moment in the independence debate with masks slipping all, over the place.

Leaving aside the remarkable claims by Nats to now ignore Scotland’s white paper for independence cause it could all change (bizarre so now we are voting for complete unknown if you vote yes).

My favourite post in this debate goes to Justafan. Copied word for word below (without any hint of irony).

“A ‘free’ Scotland…socialist or Tory free or…SNP Tories?

    All this misses the point.

If Scotland was independent then the government elected will have been chosen in a free democratic (possibly compulsory) vote of the people registered to do so.

Its called democracy and seem to be popular in other nations!

    StillnotmadeupmymindCSC”

Mmmmm democracy. Isn’t that what happens when the biggest vote gets the power? Mmmm perhaps that’s what the uk has been? If Scotland is independent despite my street voting against it can my street say it’s not democracy?

    Do you Nats get democracy?

Also I loved the compulsorary line in justafans post.

Man we would have such a liberal society if we voted for independence.

The mask has not so much as slipped as fallen off…….

  22. The Yes campaign is an absolute shambles. No answers to even the most basic economic questions and a complete intolerance towards anyone that isn’t downing Salmond and Sturgeon’s Kool Aid.

Some of the comments directed towards JK Rowling and Clare Lally today are utterly disgraceful.

    “Civic” nationalism? Aye, right…

C’mon can you do better? Or are you all English hating racists after all?

  25. If we vote yes, will we get a Safe Standing Area?

    From the official site:-

Following a meeting held today between the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) and representatives of Celtic, the following statement has been released:

Celtic Football Club is disappointed and frustrated that approval could not be given at today’s meeting of the SAG to grant permission to install rail seating in Celtic Park, designed to allow safe standing by supporters.

The Club has provided detailed information in support of this proposal over the past two years and has made every effort to address comprehensively all issues raised by the SAG. The SAG has asked for further time and information to be provided before a final decision can be made.

The Club of course will provide the additional information requested and we will undertake to do this as quickly as possible. We will then seek an early meeting of the SAG to consider progressing this matter without further delay.

This is an important spectator safety issue. It is also an opportunity for Glasgow and for Scottish football to lead the UK in this area and it is one which Celtic will continue to pursue.

We look forward to the next meeting taking place and hope this matter can be resolved as soon as possible.

  26. JimmyQuinnsBits on

    Ernie,

I genuinely can’t see how they would implement a strategy like that and not foresee the backlash it would provoke. I’ve no doubt there is an aggressive media campaign, and the “No” side will have one too, but supporting nutter posts – actively or passively – I don’t see how they could believe that would work.
