So-called spivs only ones to cough up again

1057

It appears that the so-called spivs are once again the only people likely to put their hands in their pockets to fund the coming season’s shortfall at Newco Rangers.  There has been a campaign for much of this year to drive the club into the gutter, although on this occasion no one has accused Celtic fans, the SFA, HMRC or various imaginary enemies of acting in an underhand manner.  These moves were all the work of formerly loyal Rangers men, who wanted ownership of Newco on the cheap, or some kind of influence thereafter.

The ‘spivs’ have not been intimidated or been blackmailed into handing over the club to hostile forces.  Instead they are prepared to invest again, stay the course and see a return on their money.

‘Spivs’ is an unnecessarily pejorative term but if money comes in from the variety of hedge funds and offshore entities it will not be a gift.  Neither was the initial investment of £5.5m, or the subsequent monies raised at the IPO.

It’s too late to complain about who owns the club, or that a collection on wealthy fans could have bought the assets of Rangers on the cheap when Charles Green stepped in.  Campaigns to undermine the club will not bring about a dramatic change, they will only weaken an already painfully weak entity.

Two years ago someone inside the game told me ‘the Rangers you know are dead, whether they phoenix or not.’  The outfit which exists now will forever be a bit-part player, which even Dave King recognises is an untenable commercial proposition.

Remember, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday. Take a camera.
And before that, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday. Expect anecdote overload.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Independent or not will any politician have the balls to tackle the sectarian marches that takes place in this country ?

A good question which I don’t have an answer for, and it is much worse imo than 50 years ago.

I remember the 12th of July march and that was that, although I could be wrong.

Now we have a marching season that goes on for months and causes massive inconvenience and trouble is often the result as the drunken hordes run rampage.

Haven’t read that in any of the historical accounts about the founding of Celtic, it was always just the 3 parishes that were mentioned.

  12. scotlands shame on

Im sick of the school boy politics surrounding this ref. My family at the moment have a reasonable standard of living. Not rich not poor but comfortable. I need to be convinced to put my family stability at risk. However i see petty arguments so far. It cannot be reasonable to say vote yes as have Tory rule in west minister. For most of my voting life been labour govt, is the campaign for yes so weak that were labour still in power i should vote no? To counter same argument i have never voted snp yet that is govt in Scotland so by logic i should vote no.

I am also sick of those with different opinion facing aggression from yes voters. Vue cinema show no advert an yes voters out calling boycott. B&q owner does same an boycott called again. J k rowling? Same again. Is this how we Will treat those with different opinions in an independent Scotland?

I need facts. Will i have to pay more tax. Will prices go up. Will my wage match increases or Will my standard of living fall? How Will my pension be affected? If tax not goin up how are we paying for everything in country. Will popular policies like free prescription, bus fares for pensioners last more than 5 yrs an if so how Will they be financed?

I don’t want abuse, i don’t want jingoistic clap trap, i don’t want patronized bout Tories who may or may not be in power next election.

I am anti monarchy dislike the butchers flag immensely an describe myself as Scottish not British. I see how devolution works just now an for my family we are doin ok, for their future i need answers to these questions b4 risking my families future on a maybe an a why not an lets see how it goes.

I don’t want abuse, answers wud be nice, can yes voters help me out here without petty name calling or rubbishing me for wanting info an answers b4 deciding what to do based on what’s best for my family.

    That is my fear…

Scotland MAY lose the pluralism which has gradually built up over the past 70/80 years. Trying not to be political but think this was largely due to the advance of the Labour Party and the very slow demise of the Unionist element masquerading as ‘Conservative’.

Of course my fear could be misplaced and I underestimate my modern fellow citizens.

  21. Lennybhoy,

It’s all about the currency I’m afraid. Without that, your “independence” isn’t worth the wee saltire it’s written on.

I’m genuinely astonished the prime goal of the nationalist movement in Scotland is to hitch our economy to Westminster… they spend all their time telling us how terrible Britain is and yet their main economic priority is to maintain this economic link.

    It’s mind-numbingly illogical.

And of course it won’t happen. The Euro crisis has seen to that. No way will London agree to write blank cheques for Eck after a Yes vote, and why should they?

    The alternatives are therefore:

    1. The Euro. Which means our budget will be signed off in Frankfurt. Bye bye independence, hello Angela Merkel and her gnomes.

    2. Sterlingisation – ie using sterling without access to the Bank of England. In that case prepare for immediate and drastic spending cuts to build up sterling/dollar/euro reserves in order to stem massive capital flight from Scotland. Also prepare for exclusion from the EU as there is no way a new member will be allowed in without its own central bank. Business will flee to Carlisle to remain part of the single market and Scotland’s corporate and income tax base will disappear… quickly followed by the welfare state it supports.

    3. Our own currency. Again, be prepared for savage welfare spending cuts in order to build up reserves of hard currency as Scotland will be fending off every currency speculator in the world from day one. And again, be prepared for exclusion from EU as no new member will be allowed to join without an immediate commitment to joining the Euro.

I’m not sure people realise just how horrifically right-wing the consequences of a Yes vote could be. One thing’s for sure, we’d get an immediate lesson in the harsh reality of global economics, and we’d soon learn just how much “independence” a small economy like Scotland would have outside the protective embrace of the UK and EU.

Lots of people -especially on the left – will be in for an almighty shock should Scotland vote Yes.

  28. A “Yes”vote, might not give Scotland a paradise to live in.It might.Even if it were 50/50,it would be preferable to 100% rule from Westminster.

I want to see a country that tries to care for the elderly. That has compassion for its sick and disabled residents.More hospital beds, more nurses, more care workers.

I want to see a country that is happy to educate our kids, freely.

I want to see a country that will refuse to be dragged into unlawful wars to feed the greed of the arms dealers, and oil companies. That could divert the billion toward a better life for its inhabitants.

I want to see a country that will throw out Trident,an abomination on the face of the planet, and divert the money saved into some of the above mentioned.

I want to see a country whose citizens votes will actually mean something and not be rendered useless by 65 million voters across the border.

These are some of the things I want to see.Something to strive for with some hope.

I will vote YES in the hope some of these things materialize.

A NO vote would mean,to me,that all of the above would never be attainable for the people of Scotland.

    TURKEYBHOY WILL VOTE YES.
