So-called spivs only ones to cough up again

1057

It appears that the so-called spivs are once again the only people likely to put their hands in their pockets to fund the coming season’s shortfall at Newco Rangers.  There has been a campaign for much of this year to drive the club into the gutter, although on this occasion no one has accused Celtic fans, the SFA, HMRC or various imaginary enemies of acting in an underhand manner.  These moves were all the work of formerly loyal Rangers men, who wanted ownership of Newco on the cheap, or some kind of influence thereafter.

The ‘spivs’ have not been intimidated or been blackmailed into handing over the club to hostile forces.  Instead they are prepared to invest again, stay the course and see a return on their money.

‘Spivs’ is an unnecessarily pejorative term but if money comes in from the variety of hedge funds and offshore entities it will not be a gift.  Neither was the initial investment of £5.5m, or the subsequent monies raised at the IPO.

It’s too late to complain about who owns the club, or that a collection on wealthy fans could have bought the assets of Rangers on the cheap when Charles Green stepped in.  Campaigns to undermine the club will not bring about a dramatic change, they will only weaken an already painfully weak entity.

Two years ago someone inside the game told me ‘the Rangers you know are dead, whether they phoenix or not.’  The outfit which exists now will forever be a bit-part player, which even Dave King recognises is an untenable commercial proposition.

Remember, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday. Take a camera.
And before that, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday. Expect anecdote overload.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Thanks for the measured response and will consider this along with the other issues. As I said in my first post this evening I prefer to read and contribute to footballing matters. I will no revert to doing so and will scroll on by posts relating to the independence debate.

I will make my decision objectively. Thanks again.

Fair enough and I expected that reaction. My real point is that I don’t think that either side can say with any certainty what the financial implications will be. There are far too many variables including political decisions which depend on future elections. I would just rather have those decisions taken closer to home.

    …………………………………………………..

I can see positives and negatives on both sides of the divide. It is attractive that the decision makers will be just up the road, but wait a minute aren’t the decision makers who gave us the OB Act, who thought that it was a spiffing idea to invest ordinary coppers with the power to decide what constitites an offensive remark or action and who lost/ deliberately destroyed government statistics which showed that Catholics, although a minority, were 6 times as likely to be assaulted by non-catholics not only in the West of Scotland but in every part of Scotland.

I think you underestimate the importance of finance and how much it matters in people’s lives. It may have been a throw away line from you about the importance of £20 per week. Trust me that amount of money will decide how many people vote. I wouldn’t like to predict how the vote will go but I will vote for what I perceive to be the best interests of my family. To me money will be the most important factor.

About three weeks ago, a guy came round the doors in the area where I live, middle class with a lot of elderly people living off pension, conducting a survey on behalf of the Yes campaign. My wife answered the door and answered his questions. She got the distinct impression that the survey hadn’t given him the answers he was hoping for not only from her but in the area as a whole.

  6. And another thing, our new away strip is appalling. It bears no resemblence to the club’s historical kits, and is more like something you’d wear on the golf course or at Christmas time than on a football pitch.

    Our away kit should be:

    1. White shirt.

    2. Stonking big green four-leaf clover on the breast

    3. Green shorts.

    4. Green/white hooped socks.

Players should also brylcreem their hair in a sensible side parting, and sport a pipe if the occasion demands.

I completely appreciate your view and more importantly your right to express it. How everyone votes is entirely up to the individual and each will have their own reasons, I have given you a flavour of mine and you have given yours. The most important thing g as far as I am concerned is that the morning after the referendum we all wake up and get together to make the result work for all of us whatever it might be.

Btw I think that the OB Bill is an outrageous piece of legislation, however the ST does not have a monopoly on outrageous legislation Westminster has passed its share.

Im sick of the school boy politics surrounding this ref. My family at the moment have a reasonable standard of living. Not rich not poor but comfortable. I need to be convinced to put my family stability at risk. However i see petty arguments so far. It cannot be reasonable to say vote yes as have Tory rule in west minister. For most of my voting life been labour govt, is the campaign for yes so weak that were labour still in power i should vote no? To counter same argument i have never voted snp yet that is govt in Scotland so by logic i should vote no.

I am also sick of those with different opinion facing aggression from yes voters. Vue cinema show no advert an yes voters out calling boycott. B&q owner does same an boycott called again. J k rowling? Same again. Is this how we Will treat those with different opinions in an independent Scotland?

I need facts. Will i have to pay more tax. Will prices go up. Will my wage match increases or Will my standard of living fall? How Will my pension be affected? If tax not goin up how are we paying for everything in country. Will popular policies like free prescription, bus fares for pensioners last more than 5 yrs an if so how Will they be financed?

I don’t want abuse, i don’t want jingoistic clap trap, i don’t want patronized bout Tories who may or may not be in power next election.

I am anti monarchy dislike the butchers flag immensely an describe myself as Scottish not British. I see how devolution works just now an for my family we are doin ok, for their future i need answers to these questions b4 risking my families future on a maybe an a why not an lets see how it goes.

I don’t want abuse, answers wud be nice, can yes voters help me out here without petty name calling or rubbishing me for wanting info an answers b4 deciding what to do based on what’s best for my family.

    ……………………………………………………

I am in a very similar position to yourself and share exactly the same anxieties as you have expressed. I’ve also asked the same questions as you have and while some posters have made earnest attempts to address them, I have been given few answers which reassure me. At the moment, I see it as a huge gamble.

This really is confusing me as it’s up to clubs to self certificate the safety of their stadia. Just ask GCC if you want clarification on the issue. Safety at Stadia is covered by Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds

    http://www.safetyatsportsgrounds.org.uk/sites/default/files/publications/green-guide.pdf

I have spoken to JP Taylor re this issue and am very unhappy with the responses I have had from the club. Either someone is blocking this from GCC , the Police etc or the club have abandoned it. The statement from the club says nothing and is strangly very vauge on the reasons for a safe standing area not being introduced.
