So-called spivs only ones to cough up again

1057

It appears that the so-called spivs are once again the only people likely to put their hands in their pockets to fund the coming season’s shortfall at Newco Rangers.  There has been a campaign for much of this year to drive the club into the gutter, although on this occasion no one has accused Celtic fans, the SFA, HMRC or various imaginary enemies of acting in an underhand manner.  These moves were all the work of formerly loyal Rangers men, who wanted ownership of Newco on the cheap, or some kind of influence thereafter.

The ‘spivs’ have not been intimidated or been blackmailed into handing over the club to hostile forces.  Instead they are prepared to invest again, stay the course and see a return on their money.

‘Spivs’ is an unnecessarily pejorative term but if money comes in from the variety of hedge funds and offshore entities it will not be a gift.  Neither was the initial investment of £5.5m, or the subsequent monies raised at the IPO.

It’s too late to complain about who owns the club, or that a collection on wealthy fans could have bought the assets of Rangers on the cheap when Charles Green stepped in.  Campaigns to undermine the club will not bring about a dramatic change, they will only weaken an already painfully weak entity.

Two years ago someone inside the game told me ‘the Rangers you know are dead, whether they phoenix or not.’  The outfit which exists now will forever be a bit-part player, which even Dave King recognises is an untenable commercial proposition.

Remember, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday. Take a camera.
And before that, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday. Expect anecdote overload.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

The SFA received both public money and National Lottery money, (Jack McGinn picked up the cheque on TV if I am not mistaken, some £25 million in reddies), to redevelop Hampden. Looks to me that the SFA are worried that Queens Park will have the upper hand in negotiations a few years down the road. Elsewhere, was looking at some pictures from Celtic Park re the preparations for the Commonwealth ceremony in July, and I must admit I did not realise how much work was involved. Guaranteed that all three, hopefully, of our CL qualifiers will be through in Auld Reekie. Not surprised to see a Scotland game at ol’ Ayebroke but pleased to see the Scotland-Ireland match will be at Paradise.

  2. I do laugh at the feigned outrage from the unionists together.side issue diversion nonsense kind of akin to going to war, invade iraq type outrage

I will not be told by no defender of elite British opininion what is outrage.

Never believed it anytime regardless of YES

debate, never will…flicks har and types off lol :-)

I’m an undecided but a wee thing that keeps coming into my head is this…..

I keep hearing those in the YES camp saying that they’re not voting for an SNP government but an independent Scotland which will be led by a socialist Labour Party in the future.

These same people advocate the removal of Trident from Faslane (that seems fair enough to me).

However, surely Trident will only move south, either to Cumbria or Northumberland.

It doesn’t appear a very socialist attitude where you get rid of something you despise only to foist it upon another with thought or care for their feelings.

Was there not a deedco lottery winner around the time of the multi billion pound raising ipo?

I think it might have been Jack Glass that asked that question originally.

“Is that mushy peas, or is it guacamole you are serving there Brother Walfrid?”

  6. Voting YES does not mean you have to support the SNP and its white paper.

Voting YES provides independence and then the powers to make change possible.

Changing the current dynamic – vote and more importantly get off our backsides and campaign for policies that will shape our future direction.

Most people when they buy a house then do it up they way they want it. They can’t do it until they own the property.

Voting NO retains the status quo. The Scottish Parliament as it is currently constituted is an Act of the UK Parliament which can be revoked by the same parliament. What did Tony Blair describe it as – like a parish council.

This is an opportunity to take our destiny into our own hands. Cease the day. Create a new dynamic.

And Ernie – Scotland will not automatically be a left wing country (I didn’t say it would) but the opportunity to campaign for progressive polices and get them enacted will be in our hands.

I’m voting YES in a HOPE for something better. My son and his generation deserve it.

  8. I’m all for getting rid of the cost of the nukes but moving them a few hundred miles south will not make any difference from a safety point of view.

BOOM!!! All yer windaes will be oot for sure.

  9. Catastrophic day for the Nats. Mask is slipping and what’s underneath sure ain’t pretty…

  10. Hamiltontim

Perhaps the prospect of Trident nuclear weapons on the shores of England will change their perception of nuclear weapons as well as the cost of arranging to store them. I have always supported the CND position of Unilateral disarmament with the full knowledge that France would still have nukes. I will still campaign with friends in England to rid nuclear weapons from these Isles and like minded people all over the world to rid us of these abominations.

  11. Oh dear for the Nats the mask has slipped to reveal a very very ugly beast indeed.

    Where are you billy bhoy05?

The backlash has finally begun. Wee eck trying to claim it’s such a grown up debate but all these cyber Nats are, rather hilariously, ending any hope of a yes vote.

If they move Trident to Barrow and it all kicks off Shangri-La will be obliterated.

The only thing left will be the windfarms.

  13. A ‘free’ Scotland…socialist or Tory free or…SNP Tories?

    All this misses the point.

If Scotland was independent then the government elected will have been chosen in a free democratic (possibly compulsory) vote of the people registered to do so.

Its called democracy and seem to be popular in other nations!

Nobody is more critical than me of David Murray and the damage he did to Scottish Football.

However, it worth remembering that Fergus shared his views on the folly of spending money on Hampden.

The whole point of a Yes Vote will be to give the Scottish people the right to vote for a government of its own choosing.

Hopefully the majority of people living in England will stand up and say No to Trident as well.

Many might currently be happy to have them whilst they are harboured 30 miles from Glasgow. Maybe less so when the prospect of being closer to where they live becomes a possibility.

No one knows for certain the who will win outright control in an independent Scotland, i personally have never read predictions of a socialist labour party winning outright control, what we do know is that the first Government in an independent Scotland will be elected by a far superior and fairer electoral system than which elects the U K parliament, on the question of trident, if a Scottish Government is elected on a mandate to remove trident then i hope it does indeed carry out the wishes of the electorate, now i am well aware this is a rare occurrence in British mainstream politics, i am sure our English friends will follow our democratic lead and vote to remove it to, although the chances of a UK government following through on a commitment are zero, the present Liberal Democrats in the present coalition a perfect example

If Scotland gains independence it will not be a decision for Scotland where Trident will end up. That will be a decision for Washington, Westminster and the remainder of the UK to deal with. Although as an interim measure I suggest OldTim67 should look after them until they make their decision.

A BOOZY teacher was booted out of school for being drunk in the classroom.

It’s claimed a female member of staff at Castle Douglas High in Kirkcudbrightshire hurled “foul abuse” at a pupil during a morning lesson.

A source said: “The kids knew she was drunk.”

The teacher was removed from the class by another member of staff who walked in during the incident.

It’s understood a student threw a stress ball at the teacher, hitting her on the back.

The furious woman turned and started shouting at the wrong pupil.

The source told our sister paper the Dumfries and Galloway Standard said: “That’s when it was

    discovered she was drunk.

“I understand her car keys were taken off her so she couldn’t drive out the school gates.”

The source claimed the incident happened first thing in the morning.

She added: “It’s kind of sad in a way because we don’t know the circumstances of why she was drunk at school in the first place.

“It really shouldn’t have gone unnoticed that she was drunk.

“You don’t expect something like this to happen at a morning lesson.”

Head teacher Gerald Donnelly said he couldn’t comment on the incident, which happened last Wednesday.

But the school dealt with it “as swiftly as possible”.

A Dumfries and Galloway Council spokesman said: “It would be inappropriate for the council to discuss with the media any personnel matter relating to an individual.

“However, the council take our duty of care to all pupils and staff very seriously and reported

incidents in our schools are reacted to quickly and appropriate action taken.”
