SPFL review but know to expect further challenges

1294

The new SPFL board yesterday agreed that some sort of review should take place into the debacle which saw Rangers collapse into liquidation. While this is welcome as far as it goes, its scope will necessarily be bound by what the SPFL previously agreed to bind itself to.  This was clear from the off, which I alluded to at the time.

If you contractually agree to limit your future actions for all purposes, you tie your own hands. This is where the SPFL are now and it is the reason we must look beyond them. The actions of those who tied their own hands are just as important as matters pertaining to the integrity of Scottish football’s competitions (the Scottish Cup and SFL League Cup, as well as the SPL).

The SPFL are not the only ones who are looking into this matter. They know to expect challenges during the course of the next two months.

It’s irritatingly believable to imagine that Celtic PLC already know the wording of tomorrow’s SPFL’s press release, and, likewise, that the SPFL know the wording of the one that Celtic will then release. Bunch of gombeen men the lot of them.

Can anyone show justification for Celtic`s blanket ban?

I am at a loss to think of anything that would deem the action fair. If it can be justified, Celtic have been remiss in not making that clear.

“Linfield have given a lifetime ban to an “individual” convicted of a criminal offence committed during the Champions League tie at Celtic on 19 July.

Linfield said the person was not a club member or season ticket holder.

“We have begun an investigation to establish how they were able to obtain a match ticket,” the club added.

Celtic, who won the game 4-0 to complete a 6-0 aggregate victory, have been charged by Uefa over an “illicit banner” displayed during the match.

A Uefa spokesperson said that the charge related to the banner “portraying a person in a paramilitary uniform”.

That case will be dealt with by the Uefa control, ethics and disciplinary body on Friday.

    Stadium closure

Trouble in the first leg in Belfast led to Linfield being handed a partial stadium closure for their next European tie and fined £8,850 following incidents at Windsor Park.

Uefa imposed the penalties after objects were thrown at Celtic players in the second-round qualifier.

Linfield’s South Stand lower section 1 will be closed for one European game.

“We continue to co-operate with the PSNI [Police Service of Northern Ireland] over the events of the first leg and are hopeful that individuals who have now been identified will shortly appear before the courts,” Linfield said.

“Linfield note that the local courts have the power to issue banning orders against individuals convicted of criminal offences in football stadia and would be fully supportive of such punishments being invoked in the event of convictions arising from this match.”

Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths received a one-match ban for provoking spectators while his club were fined £4,000. Griffiths tied a Celtic scarf to a goalpost after the final whistle in Belfast.”

  11. “Turn again Dick Whittington…..turn again……”

  13. Chairman Daniel Levy has defended Tottenham’s lack of transfer activity this summer and claimed the spending by other Premier League clubs is unsustainable.

More than £850m has been spent by top-flight sides in the transfer window, which ends on 31 August.

But Tottenham, who sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City for £45m this month, have not made any signings.

“We have a duty to manage the club appropriately,” said Levy.

“Some of the activity that is going on at the moment is just impossible for it to be sustainable.

“Somebody spending £200m more than they’re earning, eventually it catches up with you. And you can’t keep doing it.”

  14. I feel with the loss of Patrick Roberts , we are starting of weaker than we finished the season .

With james Forrest , you don’t know what to expect , really does blow hot and cold . The few games I have seen from the new players ,tells me it’s a bit to early to judge . I sincerely hope they come good , but again , was expecting more from Eboue ( sp) he hasn’t figured much in Brendan’s

Team . Still no word on stewart Armstrong . Looks like we have another Liam Miller scenario heading our way .

Just keep shaking your head ad finitum and we’re not even close.

I dont know if it’s more embarrassing than insulting, vice versa, added together. I dont know, just lower your head and keep shaking it whenever anyone asks.

I wasn’t too worried about not qualifying because I thought we had a pretty strong spine in Gordon. Boyata/Simonovic and either Dembele or Griffiths.

Looks like the midfield will need to be totally on the ball and I’ll bet Griffiths is kicking himself for stupidity. There’s a lot of it about.

Stupidity?.Since when did tying a scarf thrown at you from your own fans,to a goalpost ,in front of your own fans become a crime?.Thats the problem on here.Far too many ready to crucify our own.Griff did the same at Ibrox.I never heard one person say”That was stupid”that day.We all loved it.This was a totally trumped up charge against the wee man from the Huns at UEFA.His booking was also a disgrace.Who has ever heard of a player, unable to take a corner, due to being pelted by,debris, bottles, being booked for time wasting.

We go into tomorrows match without a striker, because our club had not the balls to appeal these ridiculous decisions.

I watched both Rosenberg Dundalk games and honestly believe with a little luck Dundalk would have got through.

    Very little between the sides.

    Celtic should win….comfortably.

‘Celtic are a football club with a unique history and tradition built on the altruism and charitable intent of it’s Irish Catholic founder.’

    ###

When the new stadium was opened Celtic’s Irish Catholic founder invited TD Sullivan to the opening ceremony to sing his song, God Save Ireland.

That song was inspired by, and pays homage to, three Irishmen who were hanged for their part in the freeing of two Fenian prisoners and the murder of a British policeman.

That’s politics, Irish politics, and physical force, unlawful, Irish politics at that, right slap bang at the heart of Celtic from the start.

It’s you, and those like you, who are out of step with the Club’s heritage. It’s just that you are too ignorant to realise it.
