SPFL review but know to expect further challenges

1294

The new SPFL board yesterday agreed that some sort of review should take place into the debacle which saw Rangers collapse into liquidation. While this is welcome as far as it goes, its scope will necessarily be bound by what the SPFL previously agreed to bind itself to.  This was clear from the off, which I alluded to at the time.

If you contractually agree to limit your future actions for all purposes, you tie your own hands. This is where the SPFL are now and it is the reason we must look beyond them. The actions of those who tied their own hands are just as important as matters pertaining to the integrity of Scottish football’s competitions (the Scottish Cup and SFL League Cup, as well as the SPL).

The SPFL are not the only ones who are looking into this matter. They know to expect challenges during the course of the next two months.

Don’t like three at the back when opponents play 4-3-3. Too much space behind the wing backs and the central defenders get dragged out wide.

Get Big Kriss in the team beside Jozo, he has the advantage of a lot more experience playing against Rosenburg.

Well, I’m sure you’re aware of my feelings on the continuity myth, given the question you kindly put to the SLO on my behalf a while back, and the amount of times I’ve bored the arse off people on here by posting the link to the official SPFL webshite.

So, on that we are in agreement.

That had me dancing with tears in my eyes (of laughter,of course). ;)

  4. I am probably being too simplistic in my interpretation of the rules but I was under the impression that the legal status of EBT’s was immaterial when it came to correctly registering players.

The regulation requires that all contract documents relating to the players earnings be lodged with the relevant football authority. The amount, method or practicalities of the payment did not concern the football governing body.

Where the LNS farce introduced confusion was with the idea that the use of EBT’s was legal and available for everyone to use, thus giving the ludicrous notion of “no sporting advantage”. This was compounded by the SFA’S Sandy Bryson inventing the “imperfect” registration and the interpretation of the rules to mean that a rule was only broken when it was uncovered not when the infraction occurred.

So instead of investigating rule breaches the commission created a smokescreen by introducing completely irrelevant notions and made this the basis of their judgement.

I could be , and frequently am, wrong but any review of this decision but be couched in terms of correcting any error in law rather than new facts having come to light.

Probably way off base but just my ramblings for what they are worth.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/brendan-rodgers-says-green-brigade-must-leave-politics-aside-1.3166434

Brendan Rodgers has called for the Green Brigade to leave politics out of Celtic Park.

The Parkhead club announced they will close the section of their stadium housing the ultras-style fans group for the next two matches after ”serious incidents of unsafe behaviour” at their previous two home games.

Celtic were hit with Uefa disciplinary charges over an alleged ”illicit banner” — a paramilitary figure — and ”blocked stairways” during their Champions League victory over Linfield last Wednesday.

Ahead of the Champions League qualifying clash with Rosenborg at Parkhead on Wednesday night, Rodgers said: “I have always been aware of Celtic’s heritage, charitable work and football work.

“That’s what it was in 1888 and is to this day.

“Celtic is not a political arena for any supporters to come into and display any sort of political element.”

Rodgers, who confirmed striker Moussa Dembele and defender Eric Sviatchenko were doubts for the first leg against the Norwegian club, added: “I was saddened by what I (have) seen.

“I want to defend the guys at some time.

“I have been fortunate enough to be around some of the top football clubs in Britain and I can categorically say the atmosphere inside Celtic Park, not just by that section, by the 60,000 supporters is the best you will witness.

“The guys in the corner add the energy and youthfulness which is absolutely amazing.

“The club have worked tirelessly over the years, the first club in Britain to put in a (safe) standing section and 99.9 per cent of the time they along with the rest of the fans give us this incredible support. But the political element is not acceptable.

“There are forums, platform for that outside of football. Take that somewhere else.

“It is not for inside Celtic Park. It is not what the values are, the ethos is and it is certainly not what I’m about as a manager.

“I have huge admiration for the support they give but my honest feelings is that I’m not with it, I am very much aligned with the thinking of the board and the people that run the club, the people that have to pay the fines. That is my answer to it.”

The Northern Irishman stressed the safety aspect of the club’s decision.

He said: “I don’t think there is a need for it.

“Some supporters might say there is a political element to football and a basis to tell a story.

“There might be other countries where this ultras factor go beyond football.

“But the governance here in Britain is different and one of the big points for me is the safety element.

“If you are putting flares up in aground you are open then to things that can happen.

“You might say that they never happen but they can happen.

“My message is, stick to football, stick to supporting the team that you love.

“We are very much one club, we are in a great moment in our history and hopefully we have an exciting period moving forward and we want all Celtic supporters to be in on that.

“But when there is a safety risk at a football game, the board have to look at it.”

As for chucking in towels. If stating an opinion on how events will turn out, is throwing in towels, then I am guilty og throwing in towels.

Would you agree that there has never been any realistic chance of an outcome, where THEY did not come up smelling of roses?

I wonder why Brendan Rogers didn’t have anything to say about the continuity myth, or the stripping of titles.

Those are the big, existential issues facing the club at the moment.

Everything else is ephemeral and trivial by comparison.

Ah yes. The old one about keeping politics out of Parkhead.

I would agree with this view, if it were not that in not so distant past, Celtic had nothing to say when a former Chairman and Director, John Reid and Willie Haughey combined to blatantly use the club’s name in pursuit of a political aim.

Who knows? Perhaps in the above episode the duo reflected the Board’s view of things.

Because it’s nothing to do with him? Because he doesn’t care? Because he came here to build a high pressure, fast, powerful, open attacking football team, to dominate in Scotland and compete in Europe in his time here, and to put in place the foundations for it to continue for decades to come?

He wants us to be a modern football club, on and off the park. I say give the man what he wants and hope his happiness in his role persuades him to be here for many years to come.

I’ll tell you one thing that’s not two. Vol Michael Davitt, RIP, Óglaigh na hÉireann, was invited to Celtic Park to lay that piece of turf from the 32 County’s and that means more to the Iris diaspora living here in Scotland than you or any Free Stater will understand.
