Sports retailing and spending what you earn

648

You get the sense that the Sword of Damocles is hanging over Newco Rangers.  Some wondered about the sense in Mike Ashley controversially renaming Ibrox as the rumoured ‘Sports Direct Outlet Village’ but having bought the rights to do so for £1, he is now able to leverage this detail in his earlier loan.

He has the retail and stadium naming rights but ownership of the club badge, details of which it appears the Newco board leaked to the Daily Record yesterday, would allow him to control the strips, novelty ducks and other tat, no matter where it’s sold.  Any future shirt deal would need his authority, as it would require use of ‘his’ logo.  Which would inevitably lead to shirt deals being concluded by one of Ashley’s in-house brands.

All this makes sense if you are a retailer with notions of monopoly status.  ‘Rangers’ branded pencil cases, alarm clocks and shirts will continue to sell, no matter in which league Newco inhabit.  It’s a straight merchandise play from the retailer, who is the only person in the UK in a position to exploit clubs going through a hard time, like Newco.

Ashley is thick-enough skinned after sitting through all that Newcastle fans could throw in his direction for years.  He doesn’t need to be liked, and with control over intellectual property like the badge, he doesn’t even need to be the retailer to make money every time club merchandise is sold.  Newco wouldn’t even be able to put the badge on their tickets without his agreement.

In many ways this proposed deal is an inevitable step.  Clubs are enormous merchandising opportunities, the people who can profit most from this are the retailers.  It is, of course, only inevitable because of the state Sir David Murray left oldco in.  As soon as he handed the keys to a liquidation specialist the game was over.

News in today’s Herald that an S&P study makes Celtic the least likely publicly listed football club in Europe to default is likely to sound a little hollow to some who watched us against Accies on Sunday. There are many ways to build a sustainable and successful football team, but none of them involve spending more than you earn.

  1. We have a young, inexperienced yet ambitious and forward thinking management team. Given that this is probably the last season without the Trading as Rangers then this is probably the only season we could risk such an experiment.

If it works they will never catch us and they know it. If it fails and they sort out somehow their own crises then they dream of us failing back into the pack.

To make it work we need to support the management team throughout the club from top to bottom. Directors, players and supporters.

The MSM will do all they can to attack the manager.

The Boatd have left RD and JC without anyone of experience, or stature within the game to provide some wisdom – in short term alteration of tactics to get wins, dealing with media and so on.

Hamilton was Morton last autumn and we should be glad it didn’t cost us a cup. If RD comes good none of us will care that we lost to a well run wee club who try to play football correctly and got a little lucky one day back in October.

I’d still like to see someone of stature appointed – maybe until the summer – to assist the new management team. Davie Hay is the name I suggest and he would do it in a minute if asked. Maybe there are other names worthy of such a role.

Didn’t the board suggest something similar for Lenny in his first full season?

Can’t remember the last time I spoke to Ger. I remember being on the phone and internet for hours trying to get him a ticket to the Juve game and having an epic fail, fail fail moment. That was going to be his press for his big 50. Maybe not that epic given how we got rodgered senseless by the Italians.

Don’t know? Two years maybe. Is he ok?

Unfortunately Ronny is at severe risk of making the same mistakes over again and finding himself out of a job. The pressure is building.

Who has he to speak to at the club? The CEO?

Davie goes to all the games, supports the club, has won and lost leagues, has European experience and knows the pressures of managing our club when results and/ or circumstances are against us. I don’t know if Ronny appreciates all that.

I sat just in front of him in Dublin just after he was appointed and while the players were confident and assured he looked to me ill at ease and apprehensive. It’s a big job managing Celtic.

  11. Ronny D is an idealist.

Pragmatism will always overcome idealism (‘iDeilaism’?)in the footballsphere.

    Mourinho v Wenger.

    12-0.

    Give us Steve Clarke.

Mourinho’s former right-hand man. Good enough for us, pragmatic enough to solidify our squad, bring in tactical nous, knows how to WIN.

Scottish, familiar with the script, a major mistake by WBA letting him go after a handful of poor results; can’t believe we overlooked him in the summer in favour of RD; can understand he’d have cost Pistol pete more money; well, it should soon be his time.
