Sports retailing and spending what you earn

You get the sense that the Sword of Damocles is hanging over Newco Rangers.  Some wondered about the sense in Mike Ashley controversially renaming Ibrox as the rumoured ‘Sports Direct Outlet Village’ but having bought the rights to do so for £1, he is now able to leverage this detail in his earlier loan.

He has the retail and stadium naming rights but ownership of the club badge, details of which it appears the Newco board leaked to the Daily Record yesterday, would allow him to control the strips, novelty ducks and other tat, no matter where it’s sold.  Any future shirt deal would need his authority, as it would require use of ‘his’ logo.  Which would inevitably lead to shirt deals being concluded by one of Ashley’s in-house brands.

All this makes sense if you are a retailer with notions of monopoly status.  ‘Rangers’ branded pencil cases, alarm clocks and shirts will continue to sell, no matter in which league Newco inhabit.  It’s a straight merchandise play from the retailer, who is the only person in the UK in a position to exploit clubs going through a hard time, like Newco.

Ashley is thick-enough skinned after sitting through all that Newcastle fans could throw in his direction for years.  He doesn’t need to be liked, and with control over intellectual property like the badge, he doesn’t even need to be the retailer to make money every time club merchandise is sold.  Newco wouldn’t even be able to put the badge on their tickets without his agreement.

In many ways this proposed deal is an inevitable step.  Clubs are enormous merchandising opportunities, the people who can profit most from this are the retailers.  It is, of course, only inevitable because of the state Sir David Murray left oldco in.  As soon as he handed the keys to a liquidation specialist the game was over.

News in today’s Herald that an S&P study makes Celtic the least likely publicly listed football club in Europe to default is likely to sound a little hollow to some who watched us against Accies on Sunday. There are many ways to build a sustainable and successful football team, but none of them involve spending more than you earn.

  2. Weefra……….the world ticks along ….we are Celtic ….but the world tics along …..we the folk with the rueful smile ,and the all seeing Fenian Hand will win the day ….patience is not only a virtue …..it should be what sets us apart from the turmoil that besets the beautiful game ….we are Celtic and we will always try to win the unwinnable fight ……..

    Glad to see that more and more on here are starting to see through the ronny nonsense

    Also good that the consensus among those opposed to him is that it’s not his fault, he is only a patsy and that lawwell is the problem. Of course then you are left with the conclusion that lawwell is desmonds boy, we are in a bad way, but as paul will Probably tell us again soon we are better off than a team that no longer exists and will never be able to challenge us again, until of course they are able to challenge us again

    RD strikes me as basically an amateur with good intentions

    I agree with other posters, when Lustig is fit, to play a diamond formation. We played our best last season in the games v Hearts & the Mothers using it.

    AGREED 1

    A twelve nil aggregate score would indicate using the diamond is best for the players we have.

    AGREED 2 both games a joy to watch!

    I thought when Nir Bitton was brought on to bolster our midfield when the Dons got into the game weeks ago, Ronny made the right move.

    AGREED 3

    You’re spot on mhate.

  6. What is the stars….i agree…the whole loan player nonsense (Roonyi already quoted as saying he didnt like the idea) comes from PL…i think DD gives PL is head…untill of course it comes to a head(which i think it will)….then ..it wont be PL’s head…it will be the managers….

  8. Evening Timland from a warm hun free mountain valley.

    Seen quite a few posters say we should concentrate on our own troubles, rather than talk about the hun.

    Agree to a point, but all it will be is talk, talk won’t change the policy, at least talking about thems is light relief, to talk about where we are is somewhat painful, it is to me nayways.

    We can stamp our feet, ans scweem and scweem all day long, it will get us nowhere.

    Canamalar and Auldheid got Res 12 on the agenda at the last AGM, all talk so far, Auldheid actually said that the club didn’t see Res 12 as a priority so it was on the back burner.

    So, they don’t see that corruption, rule breaking, theft, cheating officials, fradulent dealings, coverups, I could go on all night, as a priority, why am I not surprised Eh.

    And you think talking about our woes is going to help, aye right.

    The only way change will happen is if it’s forced upon the club, talk gets you nowhere, so there >}

    CFC, not PLC

    I take it you mean the unseen all seeing Fenian Hand? :-) we seem to be trying to put a pumpkin in to an onion bag. I wish I could see some sign of progression, nothing would give me greater pleasure, believe me, but, as I already said, we appear to be getting worse. That’s my concern. Have a cyber pint with yer wee pal on the ferm. Brilliant chatting again. :-)))) and I will KTF.

    Reg 12 could be dealt with expeditiously if the plc had any interest in pursuing it

    I have great admiration for the bhoys who pushed the issue …..unfortunately the plc are obfuscating and avoiding the issue …or so it would appear …I didn’t expect any more I’m afraid

    So TV evidence canny prove it, welcome to sectarianland.

  17. Weefra my friend, funny game this fitba, Spain had 20 corners tonight and a system, but lost the game, we are work in progress, as you are well aware, the game on Sunday was dire, but hey,ho so was the Morton game last season, with a first team line up,I am giving the man a bit of slack, btw the players have not been up to the mark IMO, although the system is new to them, even the basics seem to be a problem, as has been said before time and patience, we all wanted more than playing 60% of the game across our own 18yd box,I am prayen that RD succeeds as most are, btw see Lustig was on the Sweden bench, hope yur medication is still wurken.

    Awerabest PJ

    How far down do we have to go till someone switches the light on in the boardroom ?

    It’s not looking good is it ?

    Their pain is pure pleasure to me mi amigo, and I pray it lasts for ever and a day.

    Can’t have everything mi amigo <{

    Sadl;y you are correct, where will it end up ?

    We are losing half the team in 6 months, and I can only see another set of loans coming in.

    Whoever is in charge of the team is on a loser, that is why getting rid of Ronny will be a waste of time IMO of course.

    I do believe the suits are prepared for a very long haul, and in the meantime, everything is going to suffer, apart for them obviously.

  21. The time may come( this season)..when we might have to practice what we preach…(im mad as hell ,and i aint taking this no more)…the trick is….dont do it when youre desperate(like the hun)…be pro-active not re-active…

    Euro zone on brink of tipping into recession.

    Gideon – GB not immune.

    So……that’ll pop the artificial SE England bubble.

    And the rest of us will get the splat fallout from it.

    Meanwhile Arsene Wenger continues to juggle the arsenal job while being head of the IMF.

    Nothing would give me greater pleasure than seeing Ronni doing well. I dearly want a winning team on the field. If he can turn this round, I would be over the moon. (That’s the last rocket she’ll buy me), but, I have my reservations going by what I am watching on the park. I seriously hope and pray I’m wrong. As I mentioned on sunday after the game, Lawwell was getting pelters from a mob not far in front of us in the main stand. Well deserved IMHO.

    I hope you and the family are well. :-))

    Weefra HH praying to Wee Oscar.

  24. Tet….we might have to..but in life …everything is timing….i aint a fan of the manager by any means…but if we go further behind….well 6 pts is do able…is 12?…if we go there…is 15?…. Timing……

  25. BGX

    I’m no a fan either, but getting rid is pointless, unless someone with a track record is brot in, with the wages on offer, the restrictions re transfers etc, that is not going to happen, so what’s the point.

    I still believe he will turn it round, by=ut it will take time, time that many are not prepared to give him, I am, I went thorigh all the barren years, fro early 60s, would have gone thro more, but am no old enough.

    Life-football goes in cycles, maybes it’s our time for a dip, maybes not, who knows.

    I know we shouldn’t be where we are, but we are.

    Talk will not change anything, action will.

    Take the game agin HA, we should have scored a barrowload, yet many are saying we are not doing anything positive, we are, we are making chance to beat the band, if we weren’t making chances, then I would be screaming as loud as many are to get rid, so, the manager can\t put the ball in the net, he will get it right.

    Rome wisy built in a day >}
