St Johnstone 0-2 Celtic

609

Celtic were always in control against St Johnstone in Perth this afternoon and deservedly picked up the three points although it took them almost an hour to open the scoring.  Gary Hooper knocked in a loose ball on 59 minutes before Ki Sung-Yeung finished off a sweeping Celtic brea five minutes later.

St Johnstone kept things tight early on and kept Celtic from creating a chance before Georgios Samaras created space for a shot which was saved well by Enckelman.  Celtic’s best move of the first half came after 31 minutes when Ki, Forrest and Brown combined to release Hooper.  The striker shot low and on target but Enckelman pulled off a remarkable save.

Both teams picked up the pace after half time but it was Mackay who created the first chance of the second period, forcing a save from Fraser Forster.  Cha DuRi twice crossed dangerously.  Firstly for Hooper, whose hooked effort from 4 yards was turned over by the impressive Enckelman.   James Forrest then turned a snatched chance over from Cha’s next effort.

Just before the hour Charlie Mulgrew dropped a corner into the six yard box which Victor Wanyama contested.  The ball dropped between a sea of St Johnstone legs but Hooper was onto it in a flash and prodded over.

The game was put beyond the home team five minutes later.  St Johnstone were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Celtic penalty area after Mulgrew was penalised for climbing.  The Celtic was stood strong and from the subsequence block James Forrest drove forward at pace.  Samaras returned a 1-2 to Forrest to drew Enckelman before squaring for the unmarked Ki.  The Saints’ keeper did well but could not prevent Ki’s shot from crossing the line.

Samaras mishit a shot after the impressive Cha again crossed to effect before the Greek striker ran 40 yards and had his shot blocked.

St Johnstone’s only real chance fo the game came when Wanyama slipped to let Haber close in on Forster but the keeper was equal to the shot.

tbh i have watched a few games on ALBA and i concnetrate hard on the commentary just cos i like the sounds.

    also,

i know the bhoy who was the BBC voice over for Padraig Post , and his em ……

    dubh and white chato,

    or something loke that.

  2. Tell you now I will never listen to Alba tv again.

I thought Shortbread were bad. If I heard Glasgow Sassenach once I heard it a hundred times.

I will be writing to BBC Alba tommorow.

Can anyone help? They only take complaints in gaelic.

    ;););););););););)

  3. We SHOULD slag off the Gaelic..as much as possible

I’ve been watching with the wife – who is of that particular persuasion – and taking the mickey the whole game.

Vive le difference (as i would say if i was bi-lingual)

I don`t know what the comments were but I am totally serious when I say that I much preferred that commentary, in a language I don`t understand, than the usual nonsense that normally accompanies Celtic games on ANY Channel I have heard/watched. Indeed, I am seriously thinking of writing a letter to congratulate the BBC by saying that it was the first time I have listened to a BBC commentary involving Celtic where I did not hear bias. Then I would mention that I don`t speak Gaelic.

Incidentally, do you? If so, was the commentary more balanced than the BBC normally is with Celtic?

If your off to Bratislava the most likely place would be the Dubliner Pub in the old town which you cannot miss. It is next door to a Cuban club.

It should and I stress SHOULD be on Czech Tv channel Sport 1 http://www.sport1tv.cz/index.php

Check the website but they usually show the Celtic games vs Rangers. Check a week in advance to see.

Other than that there is the Camel Pub which shows sport and all along the main streets there are other pubs which show sport from the UK.

If I were around I’d come down and show you but I’ll be visiting my family.

    Hail Hail

If STV’s stats are correct, then Kayal’s on 3 yellows, so still 3 yellows from a suspension. And no other player has more than 2.

  8. After a forgettable 45 mins, Neil got his tactics spot on today, 2nd half we played like a 3-5-2 with Cha pushing up on the right and James switching to the left, he came alive in the 2nd 45mins.

Sammy had another great game and Cha had his best shift in a Celtic jersey, for a guy who took a bit of stick on Thursday he didn’t hide today.

Just watched the Rangers game- how did they get 3 points?

McKay missed an open goal IDENTICAL to big Sammy’s first on 2nd Jan, McGregor (you know, that brilliant keeper) made the same mistake but McKay didn’t have Sammy’s coolness.

Then Johnny Hayes fluffs his shot from 6 yards when it looked easier to score, goal at his mercy.

As Liam Mcleod said- out of jail, Rangers.

Unbelievable, more like. C’mon Celts 3 points on Saturday- massive game- then unleash the dogs of war on them on the 28th

We’ll just have to beg to differ re Broonie.

However, i would agree with you on Foster his progress has indeed been gradual as opposed to dramatic. We were in the front row at the first of the two games at Tynecastle last season. The lack of confidence in him from the back four was palpable. His progress this season has been great to see but I’d agree it’s been a development over the course of the season as opposed to just the last few weeks.

Jungle Jim, not well enough to comment on that. But I do know Alex O’Henley, who was the summariser, and he’s a good Celtic man. As I previously said (as did someone else ) he use to present the daily huddle.

The reason why I am sensitive about this is if you are a Gael living in the Central Belt (as my wife is) you have to put up with these ‘humourous’ comments on a regular basis. It gets tiresome.

That’s cool. Check that TV Channel because they are the ones over here who play the Scottish games. Last year the Sammi game was on and usually they put that match on.

That was his seventh of the season:

    1 for Israel

    2 in the Europa League

    1 in the League Cup

    3rd in the SPL.

A fair bit away from a ban :-)

  13. Thanks again Snake – At worst I can get it on my laptop but I would rather be socialable and hopefully there will be a few fellow Celts wherever I end up.

  15. SadiesBhoy is happy! Happy! Happy! and ever grateful to BBC Alba for the chance to see the game. I avoided all channels where I thought I might hear the score until BBC Alba’s programme at 5:30pm. Excellent. I’m not having any digs at the Gaelic. Listening to it in English is what does my head in. The bias couldn’t be more clear. Gaelic can only be an improvement.

    Well done BBC Alba!

  17. Bonjour la classe,

Drove down the A82 with the missus this afternoon listening to Shortbread, pumped a fist at Inverbeg when Hooper lashed home.

I awakened my spouse from her hangover snooze at Luss when Cannonball Ki converted.

Stopped in at the M&S at Helensburgh en route to Paisley for some celebratory Peroni, delighted, as the darkness descended.

Cracked open a beer at home, put Man City – Arsenal on the wireless, happy, content.

Phone goes, full game on ALBA at 5.30. Oh my days, could it get any better??

Here are my reflections for those who are interested. (For those whoe are not, please scroll on by, you will not be the first !)

Scott Brown was excellent, particularly first half. He was on the ball regularly and his passing was accurate and incisive. His tackle on 40mins where he reappeared with the ball and shifted it on to Ki was superb.

Bonnie Prince Charlie Maldini is a true Celtic hero. Even better is the way the GB and the fans respond to him. When his name was sung (against Rennes?) non stop for ten minutes after his fathers death I wanted to cry with happiness, pride and solidarity. He is also an excellent player at full back, centre back or wide left in midfield. Why is he not in the Scotland squad? – Not that I particularly want him there.

Kayal looks back to what he should be, with some of his ego in check now Broony rules the roost and wears the armband. Perhaps that is unfair but that is my perception. Cha Du Ri must play on the 28th. Adam Matthews is the better player and will be a great Celt, like Wilson and Jackie Mac, but 3 lungs is in a great run of form and we cold use his athleticism against Rangers.

I think Izzy has been fit for weeks. Lennon has him in a Lennoxtown cage, eating raw steak, performing shuttle runs, ready to unleash some crazy Honduran adrenalin on the wrong uns.

Midfield is sorted. Some eloquent and tactically astute poster commented earlier that we must cut off the supply to Jelly legs. I concur wholeheartedly. Some of my mates are actually worried by our strength in midfield, concerned we have too many good players and no balance ! Ledley, Commons, Forrest, Paddy, Broony, Ki, Kayal, Slick Vic, Dylan. But we need them and I think Neil Lennon, having witnessed the mentalness of Tommy Grav and the talented but innefective Landry N’Guemo, has decided that his team will win every midfield battle against Rangers.

Also, why does Craig Levein overlook Chico Mulgrew?

Big Sammie – always loved ye !

Okay, not strictly true but he is gallus at the moment. Has to start on the 28th – never a striker and should never be judged as one. For me he is a wide forward and I believe Neil’s 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2 suits him well.

I can’t believe how good a team we have. But we must win the title in order for them to become winners, quickly. After that who knows what they can do. I take an avid interest in the average age of the Hoops XI every time we play – we rarely get beyond 23 – 24

One other thing. Dave Mackay, your card is marked, thanks to BBC ALBA, and your big ssshhhh to the Celtic fans when you ushered the ball back to your keeper in the first half. These little things irritate me and I retain them in the left side of my cranium.

From the radio and the tv I can say the fans, all better Celtic men than me, were outstanding as ever. But, a last request, let the Holy Goalie tune rest? Boruc was outstanding but I would rather we sang for Big Fraser who is our future, he will thrive on a GB tune and become world class. Write the lyrics lads…….

    Happy days, hail hail

And lastly, what does our talented, handsome versatile home grown hero, Mr Charlie Mulgrew, need to do to earn international recognition?

    TJ

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean about “humorous” comments. I lived in England for many years. I was an English teacher so my accent was less strong than it might othewise have been. Even so, I had to constantly put up with people saying,” Och aye, the noo!” and expecting me to laugh uproariously. I used to reply: I have heard that a lot down here. What does it mean? Confusion then reigned.

Having said all that, I think most of the ghuys on here were just happy to watch a game with the sound on and not be constantly outraged at biased commentary.

  19. Half time on CTV – they were showing some great great goals…

one of them was Big John’s strike against Liverpool to take us into the semi…

    Sorry everyone

    What a fucking strike!

I remember putting up the draw on teletext and leaving it on hold for 2 days – us and Boavista in the semis.

I remember seeing Steve Walford in the ML3 Sainsbury after that time. Out in the car park I walked up as he was loading his car – I offered my hand and apologised for interrupting him and I just thanked him for what for me was one of the best experiences of my life – up there with Wim’s win.
