Stokes for the McCluskey role

846

Anthony Stokes is in the best form of his Celtic career at the moment, arguably the best form of his life if you overlook his stunning cameo at Falkirk.  It’s hard to know if this is related to no longer being in the shadow of a more favoured son, or if Anthony has just got his ‘stuff’ together, but his intervention was absolutely crucial in our only Champions League win so far.  He had all the wisdom necessary to bate an opponent into a clumsy foul.

The psychology of a three year contract, worth more money, before performance bonuses, than the player will be able to spend is not always a good thing for a footballer, but the competition for a starting berth up front for Celtic is acute.  On the back of his winning goal on Sunday Amido Balde has been talking about his ambitions to secure a regular place, Teemu Pukki is guaranteed nothing while Georgios Samaras has been used regularly as a striker.  Anthony will remain under pressure to perform.

All of this competition will come into sharp focus in Amsterdam next week.  Celtic will come under pressure for most of the game, but this is something they are comfortable with.  We will need someone to exploit the openings Ajax will leave in their defence.  Put your money on Anthony for the George McCluskey role.

  1. When I first starting visiting this site a few weeks ago my thinking was that I was missing the hun clashes, but after reading the various points put forward on this game by various posters I am now convinced that I don’t want them back ever again: and I will never go to a match they’re part of

Again immaterial, the resolution stands on its own, irrespective of who gets behind it, that was deliberate. So far the only argument Ive heard against it is, who is supporting it and their motives. And that my friend, is sad, you would be very very surprised at some of the names who support it but I’ll no be telling you or anyone else :o)

The fundamental principal has always been, we have recourse and the right to use it, we supporters/shareholders cannot directly hold the SFA or UEFA to account, only affiliated clubs can do that, so through our shareholding we can ask our board to represent our concerns, and that will beat every letter writing campaign that has failed so far. Its no democracy its knowing how to squeeze the windpipe :o)

  4. Celtic playing Champions League

football in Ireland might seem like a

fantasy for the club’s many Irish

supporters, but it could become a

    reality next season.

The atmosphere in Celtic Park on Champions

League nights has become the stuff of legend

at this stage and has been commented on by

some of the best footballers in the world,

    including Andres Iniesta after Barcelona

played the Hoops earlier this season.

That atmosphere could possibly be replicated

in the Aviva Stadium or even Croke Park next

season after Celtic Chief executive Peter

Lawwell admitted that Dublin is amongst a

number of options the club are exploring as

they seek an alternative venue to play

potential Champions League qualifiers at the

    start of next season.

Should, as expected, Celtic qualify for the

Champions League again next season, they

will have to play at least one qualifying match

outside of Parkhead, which, along with other

Scottish venues, will be out of action because

    of next summer’s Commonwealth games.

Lawwell said that the club are already in

discussion with UEFA about alternative venues

and that Dublin is on the list of possibilities,

although Murrayfield is the most likely option

    at the moment.

“At the moment we have two or three options

we are looking at internally,” Lawwell told

    STV.

“The most likely and the one getting the

    highest consideration is Murrayfield.

“It is clear it is the right size, the right quality

for the Champions League game and it is

nearer Glasgow than others. We are looking at

others outside the border maybe in Ireland

and the north of England but as yet we don’t

know if UEFA would approve that.

“We are assessing the options at the moment

    before we go to UEFA.

“Clearly having it as close to Celtic Park for

our own supporters is a high, high advantage

    that Murrayfield has.”

“There are other options, probably less likely,

that we’re looking at,” Lawwell added.

“The Aviva, Croke Park or, maybe, down south,

    a northern Premier League club.

“There would be a big support in Dublin.

“The stadium was full there when we played

Liverpool in the summer, so that would be

great and there is a precedent in that we

played at Old Trafford against Rapid Vienna.

“We’re developing a few options and then

we’ll take it to UEFA and see what they think.

I don’t really know until we see the

    possibilities.”

Judging by Lawwell’s comments it doesn’t

seem likely at this stage but Celtic supporters

on this side of the water can at least dare to

    dream for now.

My guess is that CO (EBT) planned for Ibrox to get all of the last 3 games in the Scottish cup- they have already promised 2 semis and will get the MSM to create such a stink about CP being used for the final that they will be “forced” into switching it to Ibrox – its either that or he will need to repay the loan!

  19. Of course it is your right to exercise your shareholder rights Canamalar. Of course the resolution stands on its own merits. My point was just about accusations about Celtic’s motives.

I am suspicious about certain anti board elements who seem to wish to have a socialist Celtic FC. These elements are eager to sing what they like and to often castigate Celtic unfairly. However that is all irrelevant in the shareholder matter.

Good luck! I really hope some questions are answered. Thanks to your efforts, wr may learn more.

  23. The fact that I live in Oz is completely irrelevant to my point. If Celtic supporters are calling on Celtic supporters to stay away from a Celtic game because it happens to be at Ibrox that is their prerogative. But to use coercion by calling them names if they choose to attend is just not on. I am a Celtic suppoerter, regardless of where I live and I have a right to speak out against such bullying tactics.

Thanks for all the goodwill messages. Much appreciated.
