Stupid SPL 2 plan is unworkable

1353

You have been presented with a narrative that we should collapse the Scottish Premier League this summer and have the SFA register a new, two-division, league system to resolve the problems inherent in having too many bodies running our game.  This is complete nonsense.

Those pushing for a SPL 2 are, perhaps with good intentions, trying to pull a deal together to reduce the impact of the demise of Rangers FC buy allowing a phoenix the chance to gain entry into the league structure two levels higher than what they now face.

It’s a stupid proposal.

As things stand, there is no chance of a Newco getting access to the SPL next season.  Despite Neil Doncaster heavily advocating the notion, the idea is simply undeliverable.  Our club has been committed to opposing the proposition from the beginning, while many others now realise they have to observe the strong feelings of their own supporters on the matter.

Doncaster should have realised this was a campaign he could not win before he boxed himself into a corner over it.  SPL 2 is an attempt to address the ‘No to Newco’ concerns while bringing the income some in the game hope Newco will deliver.

The unnamed SFA source who briefed the BBC on this topic last week made no reference whatsoever to Newco, their focus was all on the administrative challenges of having multiple bodies in charge of the game, but this was disingenuous.  If there was a prospect of Newco getting into the SPL we would not be having this debate.

Tell us the truth, be honest, and these random, ill-considered, notions will perhaps be received in a better light.

The hope is that fans of the former club, Rangers, bring their cash along to watch Newco, which would play SPL 2 football next season and would be subject to whatever penalties the various independent bodies impose for years to come for the illegal actions of Rangers.  This would allow Newco to claim the history of Rangers, would perhaps maintain the existing BSkyB TV deal and would meet the ‘No to Newco’ demands.

There are several huge obstacles to overcome.  The SFA will soon instruct Lord Carloway’s Appellate Panel to consider a new punishment for ‘Rangers’ for misdeeds during the Craig Whyte era.  I expect him to suspend the ‘club’ for 12 months. A new independent judicial panel will consider the case against ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade through the illegal registration of players.  If/when the First Tier Tribunal finds against Rangers a fresh wave of charges will be brought against any club claiming to hold that identity – as a guide, think of the punishments for the Craig Whyte era multiplied by 12.

These three independent judicial panels will destroy whatever is left of what we used to call ‘Rangers’ and there is nothing the football authorities can do about it.

Sevco, who own Ibrox and have applied for SPL access, already face an enormous challenge to meet trading costs for a year, even in the SPL, never mind a lower league (as Dave King correctly concluded).  They are prime candidates for another insolvency event any time soon.  Best of all, a Celtic fan has now bid for the assets (more on this later)!

Even if Newco overcame these enormous challenges, the SFA and SPL executives, having realised they cannot convince fans of 11 clubs to hold their noses and put up with a Newco-Rangers, will now try to convince former Rangers fans to cough up cash to support a Newco that will be rendered impotent by the most severe penalties in the history of our game.

I cannot see former Rangers fans accepting their role as cannon fodder for St Mirren, Motherwell and (cough) Kilmarnock in a league where the Mighty Celtic romp home by 30 points.

I don’t have an objection in principle to a two-league SPL but plan it properly, don’t allow knee-jerk reactions to dictate thinking.  There’s no point in us getting paranoid about this, it’s not some attempt to help the remnants of ‘Rangers’, it’s just a stupid proposal from people who have yet to see the big picture.

    Anyroadup,

my old da only gets 13p as a state pension because his union gives him a pension as well, and he’s only allowed to make so much from a “Private pension scheme”.

Since he cant afford avoision experts he has to declare all his income which incurs penalties on his income to make sure he gets minimum support from the state, as he is seen as a burden.

So I bet him his state pension and double or quits just to remind him theres no such thing as a free meal in thatchers legacy.

65 years he worked for 13p a week.

[“Following tonights statement issued by the board of Dundee United, I shall now purchase a season ticket for the 2012-13 season knowing that my club considered the views of its lifeblood – the Dundee United support – above all other interests.

It is my sincere hope that the powers that be within the corridors of the SPL hold sporting integrity beyond question or financial considerations and that other member clubs take the same stance as the boards of Heart of Midlothian and Dundee United on the entry of a Newco, be that Rangers or otherwise.

It is my sincere regret that the clubs had to lead the way and the position of the SPL leadership has been called into serious question over this matter. As such I feel those in senior positions should be called to account for the shambolic handling of the situation that has been evident for several months now. It has taken the courage of several journalists and considerable fan pressure in Scotland to bring this matter to a head.

The season ticket sales at Dundee United prior to tonights announcement should be a warning to the SPL hierarchy that the position of Mr. Doncaster has been nothing short of embarrassing and ultimately damaging to Scottish football forcing fans to react in the only way that they felt their voices would be heard.

Dundee United fans felt there was little option other than to pressure the club into making public their own stance in light of the fact that the SPL leadership had faltered in its duty to all SPL clubs and football fans as a whole. Shame on you. This survey is too little too late for you to claim retrospective honour Mr. Doncaster. You have been found wanting and questions will remain over your governance of the league and application of its rules and regulations long after this sorry saga has come to an end.

I have a sneaky that there will be no need for a vote. The best way for Sevco to garner any sympathy, or friends, is to ask to be accepted into the 3rd division. More and more, from one set of authors or another, the writing is getting bigger and bigger on a cringing wall that they just ain’t getting into the SPL. I think destinies children have woken up to the fact that there is indeed no Sevco supporting Santa Clause and pre-ordination was as big a porkie as the tooth fairy. CHARLES GREEN’S hopes of taking a newco Rangers into the SPL look doomed.

A clear swing against owner Green and his Gers newco emerged yesterday.

Hearts chief Vladimir Romanov led the attack by insisting Jambos WON’T vote for them.

Dundee United followed suit last night while Motherwell revealed that they will let their FANS decide the fate of the new club — a move that will almost certainly mean a third ‘NO’ vote.

Caley Thistle, Hibs and Aberdeen have also hinted that they are ready to send Gers down.

That means Green would not have enough votes to win the 8-4 majority needed for an SPL place.

Hearts chief Romanov was first to break ranks with a typically colourful statement.

He said: “The football mafia represented by former owners of Rangers are to blame for some of the worst problems to hit Scottish football and must not be allowed back in under any circumstances.

“Victories were achieved not by sporting merits but through slander, conspiracies amongst players and their poaching via third parties. All of this brought hollow victories and destroyed football.

“We can also mention the attempts to eliminate Hearts with the help of the tax petitions, false accusations and threats to revoke the club licence.

“There is a saying about digging a grave for someone: you get it for yourself.

“Supporters deserve a new beginning and have to accept the fact that their club has to start from the lower league, keeping order in the SPL and without creating unfair competition with other clubs.”

United later revealed they will vote ‘no’ following a meeting with fans.

A statement read: “The board are unequivocal in the belief that a form of sporting punishment must form part of the reasoning behind any decision made and, therefore, cannot vote the newco into the SPL.

“We’d encourage fans to buy season tickets as a show of support. The financial consequences of not showing this support are extremely serious.”

Well released a statement saying they’d leave the decision to fans, days after admitting the punters wanted Gers OUT.

Inverness also admitted their decision would be heavily influenced by their supporters while Hibs fans have let chairman Rod Petrie know they won’t welcome Gers back in, with Dons followers telling their club the same.

That would seal a vote against re-entry to the SPL — and as things stand Gers would have to apply to the SFL for entry to the Third Division.

But talks have been taking place to fast-track a merger between the SFL and SPL which could mean demotion to the First Division.

Fact is for years the MSM have shown that people will buy any idea if it is printed the correct way.

Personally, I hope you are correct and no vote takes place.

The fact it has came to this stage is ample evidence of a corrupt league and an emasculated leadership who view their customers as sheep easily led by press and PR speak.

    Roll on the Grassroots…

  15. By STEPHEN HALLIDAY The Scotsman

THE prospect of Scottish top-flight football without Rangers for the first time in the 122-year history of organised professional leagues in the country appears increasingly likely ahead of the hotly debated SPL vote at Hampden on 4 July.

Charles Green’s newly constituted Rangers FC require at least seven of the 11 current SPL members to back them if they are to be granted the share of the Ibrox club which has been consigned to liquidation.

But the latest declarations of four SPL clubs yesterday suggests the odds are firmly stacked against newco Rangers. In addition to Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov’s blistering declaration that the Tynecastle club will vote against the proposal, Dundee United last night said they, too, would be voting “no” after a meeting with supporters.

A United statement, released at 9pm, explained: “Following what was a robust and constructive meeting, the Club’s position on how we will vote was substantiated by the viewpoint of the various supporters groups. The meeting finished with all in agreement as to what the correct course of action would be.

“The board of directors of Dundee United are unequivocal in the belief that a form of sporting punishment must form part of the reasoning behind any decision made and, therefore, cannot vote the newco into the SPL. General sporting integrity and, more importantly, the integrity of Scottish football must also play a significant part in the decision making process. It is our belief that any form of sporting punishment must be unambiguous in the message it displays.”

Motherwell and Inverness Caledonian Thistle also released statements which indicate they will do likewise after consultation with their supporters.

With Celtic and Hibs also expected to be in the “No” camp, it leaves Green’s hopes of securing the minimum 8-4 vote in favour of admission for newco Rangers hanging by a thread.

Although feelings in SPL boardrooms over the issue have been influenced by the commercial impact of losing Rangers, there has been widespread opposition to the newco among supporters of all 11 clubs. It seems that weight of public opinion is being taken on board and that the Ibrox club, founder members of both the Scottish Football League in 1890 and the SPL in 1998, are in line to restart life outwith the top flight.

Motherwell have announced that their vote on 4 July will be dictated by a referendum among their fans. Members of the ’Well Society, along with shareholders, will be independently balloted on whether the Rangers newco should be accepted into the SPL.

“The current board of Motherwell FC are not the owners of the club but are the trustees of the majority shareholding as we transition towards a fan-ownership model through the successfully launched ’Well Society,” said the statement from the Fir Park outfit.

“At a time we should be enjoying the club’s success on the park and development off it, we face a grave threat to the viability of our sport and our club through no fault of our own.

“It is our view that in the face of this we will be best placed if we live by the spirit of the model we are seeking to achieve. We believe it is mission critical that we both listen, and are seen to have listened, to the views of our members and shareholders on whom our club relies now and for the future. Under all scenarios we need to come together as a club to see this situation through.

“We will therefore hold a ballot of adult ’Well Society members and the small number of existing minority shareholders who have yet to join the society, on a ‘one member/shareholder’ basis. The results of the ballot will be used to determine which way the club votes on 4 July.”

Inverness Caledonian Thistle chairman Kenny Cameron, meanwhile, revealed in an open letter on his club’s website that the opposition of their Supporters Trust to a Rangers newco will help shape their vote.

“The Rangers situation has resulted in a huge volume of letters, emails and phone calls to me from Caley Thistle supporters,” said Cameron. “So many that I cannot reply individually, though all have been given due consideration and the board fully appreciates our fans’ strength of feeling on the issue.

“Similarly, all the posts on the fans’ website have been noted. This week we consulted with the Supporters Trust, whose input is particularly important to us.

“It is fair to say that those who say that Rangers have been punished sufficiently are in an extremely small minority of all the representations received.

“The directors of the club have taken all the comments on board. Our final decision on the issue will be taken based on the views of supporters and the Supporters Trust combined with what we think is best for our club from a business perspective and for Scottish football in general. This is an extremely busy period, otherwise I would have taken time to reply to all of our fans who have taken the trouble to contact me.

“Their views will not be arbitrarily dismissed.

“Meanwhile, as events continue to unfold, the board will continue to assess the situation on an ongoing basis.”

The ongoing moves by the SFA to fast track a merger of the SPL and SFL for the new season, with the newco Rangers given a place in the second tier of the revamped league structure, could now hold the key to the future of the Ibrox club.

Falkirk manager Steven Pressley, a consistent advocate of reconstruction, has questioned the motives behind the current moves and again called for an expanded top flight.

“The whole decision-making about league reconstruction is being based around what is best for Rangers and not Scottish football,” said the former Rangers and Hearts player. “I just feel there is no better opportunity to shake things up.

“We are told that the need for a 12-team league is so that there can be four Old Firm games, but that does not stand anymore.

“Why not take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revamp and restructure the league?

“Put the start of the new league season back three weeks if it is too tight a timescale.

“We are at a stage where it is critical we get it right. The only way forward is a bigger league. This is an emergency.

“One of the problems is if Rangers just come down [to the First Division], I would imagine that part of the compromise is that there will be a second team which gets promoted as well.

“If you have a 12-team league and two are going down, it brings a lot of pressure to a lot of managers in the top league, and if we are trying to develop young players then that is not an ideal environment.”
