Tallinn or Gibraltar in Champions League for Celtic

532

Brendan Rodgers will start Celtic’s Champions League trail against Flora Tallin, from Estonia, or Lincoln Red Imps, from Gibraltar, in the tournament’s second qualifying round.

Flora, who are seeded against Lincoln Red Imps, are midseason, but went out in the first qualifying round a year ago to Rabotnicki, from Macedonia (who reached the play-off round before losing narrowly to Russians, Rubin Kazan).

Red Imps won the big (cough) Iberian derby last year when they eliminated Santa Coloma from Andorra, before crashing to Erik Sviatchenko’s Midtjylland.

Neither are the British Isles-based tie Brendan Rodgers would have preferred, travelling arrangements will cost an extra day’s training, but there were far more arduous opponents in the draw.

Games take place on 12/13th July and 19/20th July. The away tie is scheduled first – but you know the drill, don’t book flights until Uefa have ratified match arrangements.

The Kilwinning accent and dialect are known and understood only by the initiated.

The Kilwinning mindset and mentality is an even deeper mystery,as a certain Tam Shields and probably your good self discovered.

Such as-So,Davie. Wiz it yerself or yer brother who got killed in The War?-to a fella who wanted to know why his brother was commemorated on The War Memorial, but he wisnae.

There was definitely no malice intended. I was very concerned when Kevin was reported missing and voiced my strong hopes, on here, that all would end well. I was extremely happy that all did end well . I then found the nature of the reporting of the terrific news rather subdued and wondered if I had missed a more comprehensive story. I think I can see why Macjay would read something in to my comment but I am still disappointed in his response. I am simply very pleased that Kevin is safe. End of.

    BMCUWPs,

It’s a shame that we missed out on Dundalk in the CL Draw.

You could have came back over and put the famous BMCUWPs wallet out of it’s misery:))

Clogherhead is about 25 minutes from Dundalk.

My mate used to work in the Harp Lager factory there. He tells me they had a free staff bar!

  14. antipodean red on

    Clogher Celt,

In November 1979, I went on the old Station Bar bus to Dundalk for the return leg of the European Cup tie. After the match, which we were fortunate to draw 0-0, we headed to Skerries for an overnight. After midnight was my 18th birthday and I wasn’t much of a drinker, all the good people on the Station Bar kept buying me liquor and I obliged until I couldn’t stand up. I never drank a drop for a good six months after that including the long bus trip to Madrid for the quarter final.

The boat trip back from Larne was also horrendous, I spent most of it on or close to the pan.

The highlight was the response to one RUC goon at Larne harbour taking a tricolour with the Pope’s face on it out of his tunic, placing it on the ground and jumping on it. Cue a mass volley of bottles and cans as the RUC beat a hasty retreat.

Only missed the Tirana game in that campaign because we couldn’t get a visa!

  15. I know I’m accessing the overseas version of the BBC website as I’m currently holidaying in Florida. But surely they can get their facts more accurate than this summary of their Sportsday news on the front page:

“England and Wales’ Euro 2016 group games. Aberdeen and Celtic learn Champions League qualifying opponents. Hearts and Hibs in Europa League draw.”

Aberdeen aren’t in the CL. And even if they were, why are they named first (petty observation and would be “justified” on alphabetical grounds I expect).

But more significant, there is no mention of The Rangers? Something wrong, shooooorly.

  16. St Stivs (from previous article)

You’re right about the least the club should be doing is referring to them as The Rangers, because Rangers only managed to walk away from around 100 million pounds worth of debt by stopping being Rangers.

So, debt dumped, we’ll just be Rangers again, as we ignore the 1986 Insolvency Act, which stops liquidated businesses using a prohibited name, I.e one close enough to the original name as to cause an association to be made.

Even The Rangers title breaks this rule, but at least it shows that they are a new club, and it annoys the feck out of them to be reminded of it.

I don’t understand why none of the 276 creditors have protested against this piss take, especially one as big as HMRC.

While this remains unresolved, and our club don’t contradict this utter nonsense, the game’s a farce, and we should be making clear that we won’t be accepting our intelligence being insulted by their Orwellian newspeak.

Even the word ‘liquidation’ has been liquidated around them.

Note ‘The Rangers Football Club ‘ is the subsidiary. Green had to add the definite article, due to fears of someone having to point out the breach of the 1986 Insolvency Act, so a token nod was made towards it.

  17. Afternoon all.

If, by a slim chance, the Lincoln Red Imps should beat Flora and we end up going to Gib could the team, coaching staff et al not stay in DD’s hoose there?

I think he still has one there.

If so, it should be big enough to fit everybody in!

You may find this link interesting. I was at the home tie against Dundalk. A player called Mick Lawlor scored that night for Dundalk. I met him a few a few years ago and he told me about the goal. I had no idea who he was and I met him through work, in Dublin. A real gentleman.

DD has more houses than a busy monopoly board.

Some of which cost more than a property in Mayfair.

  23. While on the subject, I notice both Gibraltar and Kosovo have just been granted access to the World Cup 2018 European qualifiers starting 4th September.

Gibraltar are members of UEFA but were refused membership of FIFA, so were excluded from the original draw. They took it to CAS and won their case last week and Gibraltar have been placed in Group H and Kosovo in Group I.

    Kosovo were late applicants.

  24. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

If Brendan Rodgers has anything about him and I’m sure he has, then he should have enough players at his disposal now to take care of the qualifiers.

If he is looking at anyone involved in the Euros, then you can count them out.

Anyone else would only have a couple of weeks to become acclimatised to the club and staff, to the city etc.

I think we hit the road next week, so relocation would be difficult in such a short space of time, even if they came in as soon as the window opened.

We would be better waiting for the outcome of the qualifiers to see what market we will be shopping in and what calibre of player would be willing to come to the SPFL.

Also, the preseason games and the qualifiers gives the manager an ideal opportunity to assess the full squad in action mode.

Find out who to keep and who to move on.

Makes sense to me…….and that’s all that really matters!!
