Tax Man cometh, Scottish Gov front after OBA protests

613

I know there’s been widespread criticism of many in the media for not confronting former Rangers EBT beneficiaries, now working alongside ‘proper’ journalists, for not holding ex-players to account for the enormous sums of money diverted from the tax man. I’ve spoken to a few journos who have tried to make headway on this story but been denied comment, access, or even contact details from colleagues.

The defensive line on not discussing this subject was originally “My EBT was legal and is a private finance matter”. This changed last year when these EBTs were found to have broken tax laws at appeal, when the line was changed to “This is a private finance matter which is subject to appeal”.

All fair enough. A consequence of the original legal status and ongoing appeals is that no one has broken ranks on those responsible for imposing this state of affairs on a football club, the tax man, or individual players.

The Daily Record today report HMRC are pursuing players for the payment of tax on EBTs. My understanding is that many (if not all) players received a letter from the “Club” indemnifying them from tax. Watch how quickly you’re told “Not this club, it was the club that died”.

You’re going to need patience for this one, it could have years to run, but I expect ranks will break eventually.

You can read subtext, can’t you? The Times report today that Celtic and the SPFL have written to the Scottish Government telling them to keep their noses out of the running of football clubs. This was after the Government responded to pressure from Celtic to repeal the Offensive Behaviour at Football’ Act by hitting them on a subject they knew would cause conflict with some fan groups.

Push on the Offensive Behaviour Act and watch what happens with the Fan on the Board issue which you enjoy so much but seemed to have lost momentum.

Politics is a dirty business. All this to deflect criticism of an ill-conceived, ineffective, bad law, instead of just repealing it, which will happen as soon as we no longer have a majority government. Anyway, Don’t Blame Me…….

The Celtic PLC only speak out when it suits their personal purposes….like preventing supporters from taking an active part in the running of the club.

They dont seem to be vocal on much else though.

Like for example….violent attacks on Celtic supporters…didnt hear any comment from the PLC then.

I think you are being silly now, the prima facie case is evident on res 12, there is no excuse not to follow it up.

How it affects peoples plans on future career development is the only thing standing between justice and whitewash.

The evidence has been published on here, you’ve read it ffs, and your still no accepting it, I can only assume its a learning difficulty thing you are battling, good luck with that.

Following on from last night’s posts about ‘entryists’, would Fergus Mccann, Brian Deposit, John Keane etc, be termed as entryists.

Did those who mistrust the Celtic Trust have the same attitude towards Celts for Change?

I was at the Celtic Trust AGM. No politics were mentioned, no personal agendas talked about, a good point was raised about the amount of income generated by season ticket holders over the past 20 years but who have no say in the running of the club plus how resolutions the board don’t agree with will never be passed due to the amount of shares Dermott Desmond and the board have influence with.

I’m sorry to disappoint Alfie Knoakes the pastry twin, (I’m as thick as a bottle of chips according to one of his alter egos) and his superiority complex, and others who don’t like the Celtic Trust but none of what youhave previously mentioned was evident at the AGM.

The only thing close to politics mentioned was that Celtic PLC are not keen on trade union members in their workforce. This came to light as one of the trust members is in the investors club.

A member of the waiting staff told him, he was promised double time for working last new year. He was paid single time.

The Trust committee said they could not offer assistance as it was a situation they could not get involved in.

I will probably get some replies from those who don’t like trust but there was no come the revolution talk or attitude.

Well it looks like it could be lively on the blog tonight, going out for a walk after my dinner and will buy a couple of bottles of wine to enjoy the fallout later tonight. No question time tonight but it’s been full of the boring brexit Englander stuff the last few weeks anyway. Prefer Pretty Woman anyway with big Julia..

Will be back in later with the tunes on and a couple of glasses of wine to enjoy the updates. Maybe the cricket will be finished by then ….:-)

Thanks for taking the time to explain the facts as you see them. I agree with some of the points you make, but not others, the latter, I think, being the most salient. I’m out tonight but will post as soon as possible.

“…..but please don’t keep seeing reds under beds” I could have done without this remark. There’s no point in you being an apologist for Canamalar’s insults when your own are just that bit more nuanced.

Can I point something out that comes out of your post.

The board, before any AGM, always hold a set of proxy’s or mandates.

Many shareholders, like Jobo and I can’t remember who else, bought their shares through HBOS, Hargreaves Landsdowne, or various other “institutions” etc.

Those same institutions hold the shares in trust for their customer and each year, without consultation with the customer, they send a proxy, nominally on behalf of the customer, to the company secretary saying that those shares have to be voted with the board on all or any resolution or business.

That is how at the end of each vote the board, irrespective of a show of hands, can announce that they have X million shares voting this way or that.

They are not all Dermot Desmond’s shares — and many small shareholders do not realise that their shares are being pledged to the board at each AGM.

I was discussing this recently with someone over at TSFM and there was an offer to set up a website which provided information on this together with some guidance as to what you should do if you want to take greater control of shares which are held in this way.

I am open to correction, but the main aim of the Celtic Trust is to be a vehicle for small shareholders so that their collective weight can count for something and their voice can be heard.

I do not want to appear repetative or churlish but once again I would point out that the PLC model – at least in its current format — does not, cannot, and will not give the fans any great sense if club ownership or management.

Nominally it gives some, but in reality offers little as must be obvious to the majority by now.

The “lifeblood of the club” but may also be viewed as a mechanism for delivering higher levels of attachment in the less loyal casual follower. The committed supporter relationship with Celtic could be used to stimulate higher levels of loyalty, while also facilitating the increased attachment of the fan and social devotee. You can find these statements in match day programmes. Its part of the business strategy like hot dogs, ST’s, not mentioning “them” in the SC semi, their reluctance to take up res 12 and many others. personally methinks the strong Celtic statement today is an ST sales booster.

My apologies — the reds under the bed comment was not meant to infer any nuance or whatever — it was merely a phrase used as an invitation not to see what doesn’t exist — at least without asking or investigating.

  20. Mahe The Madman,

Re Dublin, Every popular pub in Dublin was always going to be packed last Saturday. That’s why we hired a venue, booked music and made it ‘ticket only.’ It was always going to be inviting disaster if we just picked a pub and turned up ( if that’s what happened in the case you mention).

I am sorry to read of the experiences of other Celts here but last weekend was always going to be busy.

As for Rebel songs, I suppose it depends what you mean. The Foggy Dew was performed live at a Gala Performance on RTE TV on Monday, there are other songs that wouldn’t be aired.

You’ve got to remember that there are shades of opinion here too. From the West Brit to the Civil War to the situation in the 6 Counties.

The short answer is it proved easier to work to a plan, rather than just turn up, be disappointed and then take to the Internet.

I’m not trying to say we are smart but everyone knew the place would be jammers last weekend.

  24. Maybe I’m just too innocent but this place is too cynical for me. Record prints an obvious anti Celtic Story, Celtic issue an immediate response putting them in their place. I see that as positive but others see it as stunt to sell season books.
