Tell Buffon we don’t score goals but Gary Hooper does

455

Football reporting tends to follow trends and the Celtic support has been trending since the Barcelona game in November.  Juventus have arrived ready to steel themselves against wave after wave of Glasgow sentiment, but Gianluigi Buffon is right, crowds don’t score goals, or win games.

We have a part to play in settling the Celtic players and ensuring they are encouraged when they need it most (i.e. after making a mistake) but Celtic beat Barcelona because Neil Lennon designed a game plan which out-manoeuvred one of the most effective teams in history.  His players knew their tasks and stuck to plan impeccably.

If Juventus think that all they have to worry about are the fans they will lose tonight to players who have bloodied a few noses already this season.  Bizarrely, our secret weapon is not a stadium full of screaming lunatics (no implication or offence meant), it is a group of players who have proven that they can beat anyone.

Celtic have been rocked in the opening minutes of European games in recent seasons.  Starting with an edge is important.  We also need to be alert to the fact that Barcelona scored two of their three goals against Celtic beyond the 90 minute mark.  Games don’t end until the referee decides.  The 80-odd minutes between these times will take care of themselves.

And, if you meet Gianluigi on his way into Celtic Park tonight, tell him he’s right about crowds not scoring goals, but Gary Hooper does.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

was going to lump it all on Celtic and pay for my day out…heading into town shortly.

Wee man with me said dad 1-1 so bottled it and put a tenner on Celtic at +1 10/11

I will take doubling my money every time I walk through bookies door.

  5. NL and Johan Mjallby have the players well drilled on positional awareness.

The Italians for their part will have watched the Barcelona game ad nauseum and will be wide awake to the importance of winning the tactical battle. They’ll have seen how well Celtic keep their shape and will be briefed on ways to disrupt that.

I don’t think they’ll see Adam Matthews, Thomes Rogne, Michael Lustig and Scott Brown on the right as the route through our team.

For me Kelvin Wilson at centre back hasn’t the mobility or speed on the turn to cover for Charlie Mulgrew at right back. This pulls the midfield back and creates a hole there, which CM sometimes inadvertently fills, resulting in everyone out of position. Juventus are well able to exploit that.

Tonight’s weather will be no disadvantage to either team.

I think it’ll be a game where patience is crucial. And that includes the Celtic support.

The name Calciopoli (which could be translated as “Footballville”) is an ironic adaptation of Tangentopoli (“Bribesville”), which is the name that was given to some corruption-based clientelism during the Mani Pulite investigation in the early 1990s.

Bang to rights —– but Moggi was a rogue employee who acted without our knowledge. We didn’t know !

Juve never satisfactorily explained where Moggi got the necessary money to influence Officials / Referees / Linesmen / Journalists / TV pundits / Tv Producers / TV Directors etc.

I have to agree. Our lottery ticket already came up and we’re watching with glee as another rides out the draw.

I only hope that if the team hits a wall tonight or in Turin, the dashed anticipation of the support does not turn to vitriol against our young squad and manager. Not a single dissenting voice will I tolerate. They deserve only the highest praise for taking us on this adventure.

Juventus are NOT as good as Barcelona. 2-0 Celtic tonight; Hooper, Wanyama.

OPERATIONS at the bank controlled by Hearts FC owner Vladimir Romanov has been suspended amid fears it has taken too many risks.

An administrator has been appointed to Lithuanian bank Ukio Bankas after its value fell to an eight-year low as investors speculated about the unprofitable lender’s rescue or demise.

“Everyone knows the bank’s in poor shape and there are lots of rumors about what will happen,” Andrius Suminas, a broker at Swedbank AB (SWEDA) in Vilnius, reportedly said today.

“Retail investors jump on every little bit of bad news and when the price dips assume somebody must know something they don’t.”

Shares fell as much as 16 percent today in Vilnius, the biggest drop in a single day since February 2000, closing down 12 percent at 0.095 euro. The company’s value of 32.9 million euros (£28.2 million) is less than half what it was a year ago.

Romanov owns 64.9 percent of Ukio Bankas shares, according to a note in the bank’s earnings report. He is also chairman of the board and at

least part owner of a sister investment company, Ukio Banko Investicine Grupe, or UBIG.

UBIG, which controls Hearts FC, took advantage of a new Lithuanian law on January 8 allowing the company to pledge all of its assets as collateral for a purpose it has not disclosed, it has been reported.

Since December 7, Ukio Bankas has owned a company that owns 17 percent of UBIG shares, while Romanov owns another 17 percent directly.

The central bank in Lithuania, which in late 2011 shut another lender, Snoras Bankas, said in a statement it had appointed a temporary administrator for Ukio.
