That. Was. Incredible.

1667

Just a short blog today.  I found the notes for my speech this morning.  A lot of positive things should have been said about Tony (one of the nicest CQN’ers I’ve met, and I’ve lots of great CQN’ers), Jim (more committed to the welfare of others than he would be comfortable you knowing), and David (combines the cynicism you can only get by spending 30 years in the publishing business with an often incomprehensive enthusiasm and positivity).  Three people who make things happen.

The CQN Golf Committee have organised nine incredibly taxing CQN Charity Opens, which seems to require an addition to stress, as they clearly thrive on it.

I got my timing all wrong when I set the whisky auction to end at noon yesterday as I was otherwise engaged until late afternoon, when things were getting a bit hectic, but with minutes to go, E (abbreviated) stepped in with what was an opening and winning bid of £550.  The money is already with Mary’s Meals.  My thanks to E and to A Ceiler Gonof Rust, who donated the prize.

None of us had any experience at organising this kind of event.  You think all you need is a mic. and a few speakers!  I asked Phil Agnew if he would do the raffle and auction for us.  He ended up supplying what would have been thousands of pounds worth of consultancy, which saw us over the line, wouldn’t take a penny for his trouble and provided a print signed by Henrik Larsson from his daughter.  They are a family with a long-established link to Mary’s Meals.

The quality and sheer volume of donations for auction and raffle overwhelmed us. We made a call that it was probably wise to limit the number of items we put up last night, and hold some for a later date – all will go towards Mary’s Meals. Thanks to everyone who came forward.

These are just the thanks I didn’t get to last night, more to come.

I’ve no idea how much money you raised yet but I am sure the cash is in to build the second and third school kitchens.  Within weeks your buildings will be feeding circa 2700 of the poorest children on the planet.  That.  Is.  Incredible!  Well played CQN.

I’m not going to pester you to read the Magazine or buy the Seville book today, but the MyDonate like to Marys’ Meals……

Martin O’Neill took us to great heights.

    And some great lows.

But remember he was playing against cheats.

I’ll take the highs every day

  2. Tet….

I always try to diplomatically stay silent whenever this crops up in conversation with Villa fans.

My personal opinion is that not many of the current Celtic team would have got a starting place in the Villa team I watched beat Chelsea earlier on.

11 v 11 is different in a team game,I know this……but…..Again only my opinion……their manager also has far more tactical nous than ours.

Martin had few expectations to live up to,such was the disaster left for him by Barnes and Dalglish.

Aye,2005 was a disaster, and he could have done more in the cups.

Possibly,he might have put a more enthralling, rather than efficient, team onto the pitch, taken the shackles off more often (the away ties in Europe particularly)

But his status as a legendary manager of Celtic is undiminished by time. And as you say,he also had rampant cheating to overcome.

Even though I had a few disagreements about his time at the club,I was very sorry to see him leave.

And Seville and the 6-2 game will live long in my memory.

    Thanks,Martin. You restored our pride.

  4. Delaney’s I would hope that to be true but it is hypothetical.

Villa will never reach the Champions League.

If it came about in the Europa League then I would fancy Celtic over 2 legs as we always seem to be more motivated than English teams in this competition.

However,if we played them 10 times with our CURRENT SQUADS……..different outcome I would fear.

    On what I saw tonight…..most of them,unfortunately.

I think Neil Lennon would give you the same answer if he had to pick a team from both squads.

I’m only being honest with my opinion here.

I’m always fond of calling it how I see it,and have few problems with you saying that Celtic wouldn’t live with a title-chasing Liverpool.

    But a relegation-haunted Villa?

    Hmmm,naw.

As for tactical nous, our manager was the first to come up with the tactical nous to beat a all-conquering Barcelona.

With all due respect to a great Celt,Paul Lambert hasn’t managed that.

    You may be right bud?

The last two games I have watched were Villa tonight and us last night. Think a Celtic v Villa game would be a fair, great fitba spectacle.

Hope your wee team do the Mancs tomorrow!

  9. ryecatcher

    Fair comment.

Although what i’ve seen of Villa i’m sure

we would give them a doing home and away.

  10. BMCUWP, laughed out loud at that, Lenny is a lurker so why not WGS!

    Sipsini, yes indeed, fabulous.

CRC, I thought it was more boxing clever than a low blow.

TET, I need to order a few more bands for new friends made last night……………Lots more bands:_)

Watching ATM v ESP just now and talking to the young un about a wee outside bet on ATM for the CL. What’s the current odds on Athletico?

BTW, for the record. I did not eat Sipsini’s moggy.

  12. BMCUWP….

    We can agree to disagree,bud.

Like tet hilariously reminded me….opinions are like a***holes…..everybody has one.

    Me thinks you have been seduced by the epl madness >}

There is not a single Villa player I would trade for one of ours.

    I agree that Paul may have a better grasp of the game than Lenny, but he should have,he has been in the game a tad longer, If he didn’t, he should be shot >}

Seriously tho, he has bought some amount of pish, as has Lenny if you believe he has bought our players, which I don’t btw. he has had an input, but hte deal is down to the SSM, end of.

Our scouting system ids to be lauded, we can turn up a gem or two, make a few bob, beggers belief that the english can’t see the merit in this sort of system !!!!

Of course we can,it’s a blog. If we all thought the same, the blog would have died a death years ago.

Here’s today’s Villa team. I’ll let others decide which would get into our first team.

    01 Guzan

    07 Bacuna

    03 Bennett Booked (Clark – 78′ )

    15 Westwood

    04 Vlaar Booked

    02 Baker Booked

    08 El Ahmadi

    16 Delph

    20 Benteke Booked

    10 Weimann

    11 Agbonlahor (Albrighton – 75′ )

IMO,damn few. Even Benteke would only make it if judged on last season’s form.

A fifth column is a group of people who undermine a larger group, such as a nation or a besieged city, from within. The activities of a fifth column can be overt or clandestine. Forces gathered in secret can mobilize openly to assist an external attack. This term is also extended to organized actions by military personnel. Clandestine fifth column activities can involve acts of sabotage, disinformation, or espionage executed within defense lines by secret sympathizers with an external force.

  21. BMCUWP……

At least 7/8 on that list in my honest opinion.

From the Celtic team at Rugby Park last night.

VVD,Scott Brown,Adam Matthews, difficult to choose on the keepers.

    Only my honest opinion mate.

Not a Villa fan but was glad to see them do Chelsea tonight.

  22. Before next Saturdays game, or I’m working in Glasgow latter part of the week?

Before the game I’ll be handing out a lot more badges from 2pm outside the Pools office.

  23. If we had lost 1-3 at home to Benfica

CQN would be in melt down.

We had £6 million to spend.

Although in hindsight not too wisely

but way short of the squillions spent by some.

Still trying to recover from last night, my Mums in a right huff as I had arranged for her to pick myself and daughter number 3 up after the do and ended up going home on the Dumbarton Harp bus. I sent her a text but apparrently the daft old bat didn’t have her mobile switched on and sat outside on London road till half one.

I gave her the minatures of whiskey(yours to Estorilbhoy) to try and placate her but she is still seething at me.

Worse of all I lost a very special item, hoping I left it on the bus but wont find out tilll Monday.
