The Australia deal, Ibrox narrative and grievance complexes

382

Let’s clear this one out of the way, Newco are not being paid the same money Celtic will receive for competing in the Sydney Cup; Celtic will receive more than twice as much as their city rivals (figures reported elsewhere are accurate).  Confirmed.

The fee Celtic will receive, let’s call it, a ‘Jota’, is a lotta money.  The commercial department has delivered bigger deals – multi-year kit contracts, but as a one-off arrangement, this is exceptional.  The manager, who has not been home in three years, was also very keen on it happening.  The deal was not contingent on playing Newco or their participation in the tournament.  This payment is also not at risk if Newco get so much bad publicity from being filler in the Ange Homecoming Tour they decide to pull out……

I expect a couple of top English Premier League teams will also confirm games in Australia during the World Cup break, each working independently with the same promoter.

There is nothing particularly exceptional about this.  Ange Postecoglou is a sporting hero in Australia, the higher value offered to Celtic reflects this.  If he was at Ibrox, the story would be different.

This one does not suit the narrative from Ibrox, or from those peddling hoary old stories about Celtic and imagined partnerships.  It’s a lot easier being on the outside with a grievance complex and a keyboard, than being the commercial team that will put money on the table for the transfer window.

Tomorrow we might pick up on the vanity project that Chelsea has been for the last two decades.

  1. A good night for us provided we recognise our true benchmark is Euro participation and not our own wee backyard (in global terms). Both Serbian teams beaten which boosts the Scottish coefficient.

Domestically, a tough 2nd leg for them draining their limited and ageing squad, many coming to the end of their contracts, gives us a boost for the run-in to the title.

  4. Have had three FF logins banned. Agree with the sentiment expressed above that it’s sometimes a dirty wee enjoyment.

Sowing the seeds is fun but the harsh, back to earth reality is we despise it on here but also take part in it and there is nothing wrong with that.

The proper mental stuff you see on there if you ever want a reminder that they really are the darkest spot of football and society.

Still love it though! I’ve landed with a couple or three belters on there.

  11. Never like to watch der hun win but got confirmation from BT Sport on one of my main objectives for the night near the end:

“The Rangers players look out on their feet…”

Next week. I want extra-time, huns puking and hamstrings popping. They go out then I tick one of my guilty pleasures of seeing any team beat them. They don’t and I know they have 180 minutes at least of more tiring football to play whilst we put our feet up.

Win the feckin league Celtic and this stuff is remembered by nobody.

  12. When we lift the league, the last thing they will be celebrating is having a good Euro run.Means nothing other than extra cash.Win the Treble. Now we are talking deep, deep grief.

  13. When we win the league can the huns not still qualify for the CL Group Stages via the prelims?

    Asking for a friend.

PHILBHOY, you are correct. Runners up come in during the qualifiers, but I am not sure at what stage.

It looks like there’s a genuine possibility of Chelsea going into liquidation. If it happens and they start again as a newco at the bottom tier, I guarantee the FA will not allow them to use the name of the dead club. They will be seen as the new club that they are and will have no history and no honours.

Suggestions for a name for the new club?

    I’ll start with Chelsea Rangers.

  16. Tom McLaughlin on

Runners-up in the Scottish Premiership start at the CL 3rd qualifying round then play-off. It will be tricky as it would be the non-champions path, so play-off could mean facing a club from the top 5 leagues.

  17. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Philbhoy …

Yes, CL qualifiers is available to the SPFL runners-up ( either us or Sevco )

Winning the league is vital on a few levels of which this is one.

Getting ahead of myself here but .. if we win and they have to qualify?

They’ll do so with a weaker squad than that which attempted to qualify this season … and failed.

If they were to finish 2nd and fail to qualify there would be 2 immediate impacts

    1. We get more money. The entire CL prize pot for Scotland is ours

    2. They miss out on Champions League gold

    … for a second year.

Might be worth recounting some of the terrified stuff posted on here in recent years about Sevco …

    – having 2 successive years of CL gold

    – generating £80m revenue

    – stabilising financially

    – Directors gambles paid off/vindicated

    – having new foundation to kick on

    Hasn’t happened.

    Winning the league is vital.

  20. Tom,

I mentioned earlier, if Chelsea going into a roper admin event, and sell off the assets, 2nd rangers can but their one big cup and claim it as part of their history.

I think he meant to say “buy” when referring to Sevco buying a title in an asset sale.
