The ‘Be careful for what you wish for’ game.

408

It’s hard to say, was this the easiest game against Newco, easier than either of the 5-1 wins last season?  Was it our easiest game against both the Rangers group of clubs? I think it might have been.  There were some games back in the early 80s I recall, but none finished with a four goal advantage.  What about 7-1? I hear you say.  Sure, but I am assured the gap between the teams in 1957 was poorly illustrated by that game.

Make it a matter of record, at no point have Newco been further behind Celtic on or off the field, not even when we won the Premiership under Ronny and they finished third in the Championship, or in a lower league.

The closest we came to conceding was from serial-threat-to-Craig Gordon, Mikael Lustig, who spectacularly sliced a ball against the crossbar.  Craig pulled off another three fine saves within a few moments of that incident, with the score at 3-0 and Celtic apparently napping.  But honestly, this was our most dominant game of the season.

Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor and Moussa Dembele each like a goal against that lot and they filled their boots yesterday.  McGregor and Rogic both finished coolly with their weaker foot.  Ironically, McGregor benefited when Russell Martin clumsily tried to clear with his stronger, right foot, a ball which should have been played with his left.

Scott Brown deservedly won plaudits but Olivier Ntcham was irresistible.  His expertly taken penalty was a fitting reward for the way he dominated the central area of the field.

Referee Bobby Madden went into Brian McGinley territory (careful now) and awarded Celtic two penalties against teams from Ibrox.  They were both stonewallers but you and I know that doesn’t always mean they are awarded – so well played to the ref.

I don’t watch much of Newco, but based on what I have seen, this Morelos character is one of the worst strikers ever to pull on a blue jersey.  How he manages to make a living in the game when he finds putting the ball in the net from inside six yards so difficult is a mystery.

You will have noticed fluctuations in Celtic’s form this season.  They have looked short of inspiration against the likes of Hamilton, but you will also note that they peak at the right times, like the finely-tuned athletes they are.  Brendan had this date marked in his card since observing, “Be careful for what you wish for”, in response to news this semi-final draw was celebrated at Ibrox.

They will not be looking forward to their trip to Celtic Park in two weeks.

    BRTH,

    Interesting comments on Yogi.

I took Crerand’s comments to me re John as laced with a bit of hyperbole.

Remember, though, Crerand had left Celtic before Big Jock returned.

I think, from the outside, that Jock handled Yogi well, as far as his value to the team.

For all that Jock’s Celtic had a lot of flair, there was also a pragmatism and a discipline to their play.

Hughes was an instinctive , mercurial type of player, not always “trusted” in a football sense.

However, he was a very potent weapon in Celtic’s armory and was more often used with devastating effect.

He could have you shaking your head in wonderment or frustration, but He was well loved by the support, who often clamoured to Feed the Bear.

That is a great assessment of the players named.

*thanks although I don;t think i could have been as honest 20 or so years ago, definitely no 40 or 50, they were all breests tae me.

After the ’66 replay, I came home fae the boys guild that night, still in school and definitely no allowed anywhere near that game. I sat on the floor in front of my da’s chair watching the highlights, even though we knew both the score.

After brands 2nd goal, which was a sublime piece of play incidentally, I remarked “lucky goal” next think my heid is bouncing fae side tae side as my da had leaned forward and walloped it. “Cut that out and leave that kind of talk for the mugs on the terracing” he said “appreciate a good goal when you see one”. I’m not sure yet 55 years later if that was the reason or just frustration on his part. Think he eventually rubbed off on me.

BTW when we heard the score in the chapel hall our wee curate at the time Father O’Rourke who some on here knew tried tae console us with “our time will come especially when that wee lhad Johnstone gets a bit older”, bit of a seer right enough.

BP …. I would wager that there are very few on the blog who have not have tough days (maybe not as tough as the ones you described, but tough nonetheless). And I would also wager that most of those who have, have found some comfort on the blog or from friends they have met on CQN.

I disagree strongly and fundamentally with most it seems on here about how to deal with the PLC/SFA … and I know my boycott puts me in the minority on here…. but, I am still pleased to count so many of them as my friends (even some of the ones with whom I strongly disagree!)…

  20. TONTINE TIM @ 7.19,

The Father O’Rourke you mention: would that be Frank, originally from Clydebank? If it is, you’ll be pleased to know that he is living in retirement in his beloved St Michael’s, Parkhead, where he ran the Boys Guild when I was a wee wee boy. He was given a painting of himself, which included Jimmy Johnstone, on his Diamond Jubilee. He is nearly 90 and still going strong.

*same one, I believe he was fae Dalmuir. He made St Kessog’s Garden Fete a huge success with the amount of personalities he brought down including Celtic players and Dick McTaggart among others, almost sure Larry Marshall was there tae.

  24. Mike in Toronto. Hope you enjoyed the past couple of days. What’s it like joining all those miles away? Do you have to watch the game in the middle of the night?

  25. The Ettrick, Old Kilpatrick?

In 2000 I was invited by my future hun brother-in-law to watch the ‘Old Firm’ game in that hun infested shithole.

Was told beforehand it was 60/40 huns to Celtic fans. I liked the odds.

    He lied.

100% infestation and I was there with 4 Mordor season book holders. Told my hun in-law that I wasn’t impressed by the deception.

Made a decision early doors to watch my alcohol consumption.

Game kicks off to a crescendo of Hellos.

53 seconds later you could’ve heard a pin drop, and then someone is shouting “Yass!”

    It’s me.

I quickly become aware of the growls but I can’t stop smiling.

Stan the mhan scores in 8 minutes. Again I explode. I’ve attracted too much attention and hear a word of advice to my hun in-law.

“Tell him to f##### shut it!”

He pleads with me. Ok says I, ever the ambassador. Decides to use loo and pass the cutlery stand on way and have acquired a steak-knife , purely for protection.

No one follows me but I can hear rumblings from the bar. Come out to see Lambert has scored. Not one shout of joy did I hear.

The rest of the game was a blur, except for Henriks goal. As I made my escape to a waiting taxi at near full time. (For safety reasons) I hear shouts of “oh no!” followed by many expletives.

Taxi driver says “you missed Sutton scoring at the death”

I said. “Aye just as well I left or it might have been mine!”

    I was never invited back.

    Sorry for long post.
