The ‘Be careful for what you wish for’ game.

408

It’s hard to say, was this the easiest game against Newco, easier than either of the 5-1 wins last season?  Was it our easiest game against both the Rangers group of clubs? I think it might have been.  There were some games back in the early 80s I recall, but none finished with a four goal advantage.  What about 7-1? I hear you say.  Sure, but I am assured the gap between the teams in 1957 was poorly illustrated by that game.

Make it a matter of record, at no point have Newco been further behind Celtic on or off the field, not even when we won the Premiership under Ronny and they finished third in the Championship, or in a lower league.

The closest we came to conceding was from serial-threat-to-Craig Gordon, Mikael Lustig, who spectacularly sliced a ball against the crossbar.  Craig pulled off another three fine saves within a few moments of that incident, with the score at 3-0 and Celtic apparently napping.  But honestly, this was our most dominant game of the season.

Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor and Moussa Dembele each like a goal against that lot and they filled their boots yesterday.  McGregor and Rogic both finished coolly with their weaker foot.  Ironically, McGregor benefited when Russell Martin clumsily tried to clear with his stronger, right foot, a ball which should have been played with his left.

Scott Brown deservedly won plaudits but Olivier Ntcham was irresistible.  His expertly taken penalty was a fitting reward for the way he dominated the central area of the field.

Referee Bobby Madden went into Brian McGinley territory (careful now) and awarded Celtic two penalties against teams from Ibrox.  They were both stonewallers but you and I know that doesn’t always mean they are awarded – so well played to the ref.

I don’t watch much of Newco, but based on what I have seen, this Morelos character is one of the worst strikers ever to pull on a blue jersey.  How he manages to make a living in the game when he finds putting the ball in the net from inside six yards so difficult is a mystery.

You will have noticed fluctuations in Celtic’s form this season.  They have looked short of inspiration against the likes of Hamilton, but you will also note that they peak at the right times, like the finely-tuned athletes they are.  Brendan had this date marked in his card since observing, “Be careful for what you wish for”, in response to news this semi-final draw was celebrated at Ibrox.

They will not be looking forward to their trip to Celtic Park in two weeks.

  2. BSR I hope there are no Huns lurking, as the £32 million for our European run this year will surely put them over the edge… Nah I hope they are lurking, so if YEEZ ur GIRFUY

  3. Morning all

I have not been on in a while and indeed have rarely lurked- nice to see Delaney’s Dunky back though. I did say I would be back if and when we clinched the league but I am off work today and even a pessimist like me cannot see us blowing it – though I suspect that like Man City we will possibly win it off camera as all three games involving top 6 sides this weekend look likely draws

I obviously enjoyed the game on Sunday. We rarely needed to go into even second gear and other than the first 4 minutes after our third goal when we seemed to be in ‘neutral’ it was as easy a win as I ever seen us have at Hampden. Against anybody.

I still have misgivings about our defence- Tierney excepted- but our midfield and forward line is good. We will do well to hold Dembele and in a year’s time Ntcham may come into the same category. I have not always liked Olivier and still think he lacks consistency but for the last 80 minutes on Sunday he looked our most complete midfield player since a chap called Paul McStay was at his peak 26- 30 years ago

We have a few issues this summer regarding players such as Rogic, Armstrong Dembele and the loanees Roberts, Musonda and Edouard. We need better defenders than we have to play in Europe – right back is a pressing issue- but from where I am sitting things look pretty bright. Even if our form has been less attractive than a year ago the end result is likely to be the same.

As for the other lot , if they continue to be run by the crooks, charlatans and clowns who are currently mismanaging them then they will become even more of an irrelevance than they are now. I know people refer to it as ‘Espanolification’ but at the moment the process seems to be nearing them becoming, permanently, the West of Scotland Hearts.

    Mon the Hoops.

Still got a sick hollow feeling in my guts, yesterday I thought it was just the hangover, but no it’s being a Rangers fan these days that does it to you.

Sure you are right – wondering whether it will pan out as planned though. Eddie- I quite like him and would possibly have brought him on instead of Sinky on Sunday. Would certainly want him for another year.

    Brendan was explain it recently..

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has told The Daily Record that he expects Charly Musonda to make an impact for the club next season.

The former Liverpool and Swansea City boss has also suggested that there is no immediate pressure on the Chelsea-owned youngster to succeed at Celtic.

The 21-year-old, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger and earns £520,000 per year as salary according to Spotrac.com, joined the Hoops on an 18-month loan deal from Premier League giants Chelsea in the January transfer window.

Charly Musonda of Chelsea shoots during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Chelsea at Selhurst Park on October 14, 2017 in London, England.

Rodgers told The Daily Record about Musonda: “It’s a different type of loan for Charly compared to when he went to Spain and had to succeed straight away.

“Here he has 18 months to settle in, find the way of working and realising the pressures of a big club.”

“He’ll make some appearances from when he arrived in January to the
end of this season,” added Rodgers. ”Then I think next season will be a big one for him to make his mark.”

I wonder if that is how it will pan out- rumours I have heard suggest not. Rumours only so don’t shoot the messenger!

I wonder too what the future holds , Celtic-wise, for Eboue Kouassi. I quite like what I have seen and he is young but I did think he would be further on than he is

Great read in your link earlier. I remember my first night ever at the dancin’ in Clydebank when I was 15. At the end of the night I was leaving with a lovely wee lumber from Whitecrook. As we walked out of the club Oasis, I heard a shout of, Yoker Toi, followed by Scotstoun Fleet followed by Clydebank Bundy. There then started a 3 way battle wi knives and swords between, mad older men fae Yoker, Scotstoun and Clydebank. Absolute no holds barred carnage. That was the night that I decided that I would rather make love than make war. Life changer for me. Crazy times.

Good to see you back posting. Thanks for your kind message. I am unsure if Kouassi will make it for Celtic. Would take a punt on John McGinn for his role, the Broony successor.

My favourite bit is where they say they are switching it off…then seem to keep on watching. Why do they do it to themselves?

As WITS might have asked once (I think it was just the once), have they not suffered enough???
