The ‘Be careful for what you wish for’ game.

408

It’s hard to say, was this the easiest game against Newco, easier than either of the 5-1 wins last season?  Was it our easiest game against both the Rangers group of clubs? I think it might have been.  There were some games back in the early 80s I recall, but none finished with a four goal advantage.  What about 7-1? I hear you say.  Sure, but I am assured the gap between the teams in 1957 was poorly illustrated by that game.

Make it a matter of record, at no point have Newco been further behind Celtic on or off the field, not even when we won the Premiership under Ronny and they finished third in the Championship, or in a lower league.

The closest we came to conceding was from serial-threat-to-Craig Gordon, Mikael Lustig, who spectacularly sliced a ball against the crossbar.  Craig pulled off another three fine saves within a few moments of that incident, with the score at 3-0 and Celtic apparently napping.  But honestly, this was our most dominant game of the season.

Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor and Moussa Dembele each like a goal against that lot and they filled their boots yesterday.  McGregor and Rogic both finished coolly with their weaker foot.  Ironically, McGregor benefited when Russell Martin clumsily tried to clear with his stronger, right foot, a ball which should have been played with his left.

Scott Brown deservedly won plaudits but Olivier Ntcham was irresistible.  His expertly taken penalty was a fitting reward for the way he dominated the central area of the field.

Referee Bobby Madden went into Brian McGinley territory (careful now) and awarded Celtic two penalties against teams from Ibrox.  They were both stonewallers but you and I know that doesn’t always mean they are awarded – so well played to the ref.

I don’t watch much of Newco, but based on what I have seen, this Morelos character is one of the worst strikers ever to pull on a blue jersey.  How he manages to make a living in the game when he finds putting the ball in the net from inside six yards so difficult is a mystery.

You will have noticed fluctuations in Celtic’s form this season.  They have looked short of inspiration against the likes of Hamilton, but you will also note that they peak at the right times, like the finely-tuned athletes they are.  Brendan had this date marked in his card since observing, “Be careful for what you wish for”, in response to news this semi-final draw was celebrated at Ibrox.

They will not be looking forward to their trip to Celtic Park in two weeks.

I’m thinking ahead to next season and the European qualifiers.

I’m not interested in domestic stuff. It’s too much of a foregone conclusion. There just isn’t a challenge there anymore. Not Celtic’s fault, but a fact nonetheless.

And if Celtic don’t improve their effectiveness in front of goal, their goals to chances ratio, then I fear it will be a struggle. Yesterday highlighted the problem. Total domination and two goals from open play.

I appreciate that it’s a minority view. That most fans will be satisfied with stuffing the huns a few times a season and dominating third rate domestic opposition, but I just think Celtic could and should aspire to something better.

DAVID66, morning david and all cqners, aint it good to be a tim, weefra hope all goes well,

Weefratim, last summer I took a trip to Inverness via Glencoe, on the way we stopped at the Nessie Museum in Drumnadrochit, when I returned tae the bonnie bonnie banks I was telling my carolina about it and he advised me that he has a cousin, Dumbarton lassie, that lives there, in fact her maternal grampa is allegedly the first man fae Connemara tae settle in Dumbarton, the place is full of them now, small world indeed.

  16. BIG PACKY on 16TH APRIL 2018 3:47 PM

TONTINE TIM, too young to have seen jimmy millar, and forest and brand, were they any good.hh.

*aye millar was yer typical hun centre, a converted (nae pun intended) wing half who bullied Bobby Evan

forest had a bit more culture and one of only 3 Garngad born centres tae play for Scotland, he seemed tae have the indiam sign over big Billy, big Cush who played when Billy was injured soon put him in his place, after Jock arrived Billy seemed tae have a bit of a dig in him assisted by Luggy who was no shrinking violet, Berwick finished him.

I was glad tae see the back of brand a poor man’s Jimmy Greaves but still a really good poacher. He was sold to Man City and only lasted 2 seasons before moving tae Roker Park for another season and then back up the road tae Raith, he was a bit of a flop dawn sarf but when at Maine Road did a number on the huns in an article in the news of the world, claimed they were sectarian and cheap, when lawrence rebutted the latter saying a hun bonus could buy you a new car he responded with it couldnae even buy you a bike lol.

  22. No chance Murty will turf up at CP next Sunday IMO, they have imploded big time and the dressing room is in bits. God knows who they will get in, Kenny Misser might even get it till seasons end. If they turf up at CP with Murty it could be any number. They are most definitely not in it together.

TONTINE TIM, cheers pal love your knowledge, here.s one where would you put, henderson v johnstone and johnston, willie v yogi hughes.hh.

*different players, henderson was more direct but Jinky a better entertainer and a threat to all he played against, the wee mhan was more fiery tae and don’t forget that hendetson made the breakthrough before the wee mhan ousting Scottish international alice scott fae the right wing role, henderson himself has said that Jimmy was the better player

Their johnston was a really good player who we actually watched when he was a junior but also a wee ned, he was ent off over 20 times in his career, which is mibbees why we never followed through on him, when they sold him while serving a 2 month suspension my da reckoned if they hudnae he would have been sine died, he came back to them and like baxter wisnae the same player and one occasion John McMaster of the sheep had tae have the kiss of life after he stood on his throat. This is often listed as one of the reasons for the development of the rivalry between the clubs and no the fabricated story of Simpson’s tackle where the real culprit was the deidco physio who carried durranty off the park like a sack of coal. A good player ruined by the protection that was afforded him by the Scottish authorities, he scored 2 goals in the lavvy final, a wasted talent, much like gascoine, I saw him destroy us at Parkheid in a 4-2 win for them. He was 8 seasons with the huns and 7 with WBA, played about the same amount of games and yet while scoring about 90 goals for the former only netted less than 20 for WBA.

The Bear on form was unplayable and could play both left wing and centre. After spending 11 seasons with us and scoring almost 200 goals he went down to Crystal Palace with Wispy where he was runner for the :”Goal of the Season”, that gained him a move tae Sunderland joining his brother Billy, but an injury there ended his career. Some Tims wurnae that fond of him, me I loved him, Feed the Bear.

Morning bhoys and ghirls what a time to be a Tim. Last time I saw such a one sided game at Hampden against any orc team was 69 final.

*was thinking that myself as well as the GC game about 3 years earlier with the Buzz Bomb hat trick, only difference then was they had some good players in their side, and as bad as we were in the “mars bar” game at least we had some decent players in our side, internationals tae, now they’re scheitd and although they can claim tae have internationals its only because ebt and his testimonial committee organisor contrived tae give them caps.

See the goals pitch side with Celtic TV

*love the shot of Broonie and CalMac giving the GIRUY tae the huns after the latter’s goal, like the Big Mhan said “Unlike many other Celts, I cannot claim that Celtic was my first love … but I can say that it will be my last love.” And we are so grateful for that/

  31. STEPHBHOY Celtic are working through the players contracts and talks are still ongoing with Rogic. I believe he will sign again – he seems to love it here. Same as big Moussa; the boy has consistently said he is happy and has no desire to leave. His advisors have also said that. he is listening to ZZ who has told him Celtic are the best club for him just now.

Armstrong may go but with the emergence of the ferryman as a key player this season, we are covered for that. We have Ryan Christie to come back as well as Lewis Morgan coming on board.

    Tontine Tim,

I got chatting to Pat Crerand a few years ago and the subject got on to Big Yogi.

He said that at the start of a game, they would get the ball out to John and if he beat his man, they would feed him all day.

If he didn’t, they ignored him!

Big John only had two gears. He was either On or Off. Nothing in between.

When he was on, he was, as you say, unstoppable.

Whenever Willie Henderson had the ball and haring down the wing, a cold sweat would break out amongst our support. He was so direct, with an end product of a dangerous cross.

They were a good team at that time.

Ralph Brand committed the cardinal sin of disclosing aspects of what went on at Ibrox.

He was airbrushed out of all things RFC and the media for many years.

As Ibrox was/is a masonic lodge, he was guilty of breaking their secrecy code.
