The great United reunion, signing backup keepers

1109

Ronny Deila’s dream of reconstructing the Dundee United team of 2014 is on track as United have agreed terms for the sale of striker Nadir Ciftci, who is set to join Stuart Armstrong and Gary MacKay-Steven in green and white hoops.

United are feeling sore at losing three players to a rival but it could be argued this deal is a positive result for them.  They are no different than Celtic in needing to acquire good players who will enhance their team and generate transfer fees when they leave.

Armstrong and Mackay-Steven gave Celtic a timely boost when they arrived in the team in February.  If Ciftci adapts as quickly he’ll do well.

Signing a backup goalkeeper is a tricky call.  Do you blow a large slice of budget on a genuine contender for the goalkeeper’s jersey, or perhaps promote the next teenage David Marshall?  Both are viable calls.  If we sign Logan Bailly (29) for a fee from Belgian club Leuven the expectation at Lennoxtown is that he will push Craig Gordon.

That would leave us with competition across the field, apart from the left back slot…..

“I dislike this lets pick 3 teams stuff

Reminds me of the orcs in their cheating days when one of the rags posted similar

    No triumphalism from me thanks”

Well, I’ll put that return of grumpiness down to a bout of POBT (pre Osbourne Budget Tension) but it’s still a strange reading of a post out of context, and directed at (two CQN, I think) posters who uttered not one word of triumphalism in listing the players.

But, for the avoidance of doubt:-

    1) Immediately preceding my listing of 3 teams, I posted that we had too many players on our books.

    2) That was the stated context of listing 3 teams. Your interpretation is just the result of your fevered imagination and contains not one word of support for it in my posts.

    3) Team 3 was incomplete and contained various characters who are likely to be shipped out or given a final chance on loan as they are not ready for regular first team squad action.

So far, from boasting that we had 3 full teams, I was showing that we had more than one player for each of our positions and we could do with trimming a fair bit, IF we were to get Odegaard.

There are many signs of 80s and 90s like Ibrox triumphalism in our support- describing all the other clubs as diddy teams and moaning when we don’t beat them & describing Central and Eastern European and Nordic teams as pub outfits- are more reliable indicators of that attitude than anything I posted.

Think the attraction of cricket has a lot to do with the variables the game provides, as a result few sports match it for tactical change and skill.

    I do.

I used to watch with my grandad and play it for a short while, and for me its boring.

Unless you bat or bowl and possibly a wicket keeper then forget it. I had more fun playing rounders for the school team!

Totally agree that we have too many players.

Don’t see how we can ever bring in youngsters when we buy 2/3 players for every position. The manager is always under pressure to play players who have been purchased.

  9. Cricket can be amazing.

Got into it as a kid following the Windies ‘black wash’ giants of the game.

I see that SEVCO are in London on Friday under the pretence of a bounce game with Spurs.

Sources tell me the real reason is that players have been asked to sweep the square mile for a sighting of the GASL, failing that anyone bagging a nomad or an auditor is on free pies all season.

Well the young Celts had a 5-0 win in Spain last night so it looks like we have a crop of good youngsters. While Ronny continues to build his first team I am looking forward to seeing Cifti in the hoops later today and he may get some game time on Friday.H.H.

  20. Totally understand how some guys just don’t take to cricket .

You switch it on and it looks like nothing is happening ,but for those of us that love it that’s usually when it’s all happening.

If you have the time stick with it you won’t be disappointed .

Cancelled sky sports years ago , virgin media freebies aside, but cricket on the radio is a real education , the commentators and summarisers put their football counterparts to shame.

It was/is the “nasty, (tax evading) capitalist bankers’ fault” is what Tsipras is saying.

Successive right wing capitalist governments and bankers have consistently procured monies and aboided paying tax whilst halving wages and pensions to the Greek working people.

Much the same as Mr Osborne will announce later today back in ole UK.

I was on here the other day and we didn’t have enough players, then suddenly you wake up, check the weather in East Kilbride and now we’ve got too many?

  25. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked,

I did indeed see where we were in the league. I have to admit I was a wee bit surprised but that was my lot as a supporter growing up, as it was for those of my age. It made our subsequent wins all the more enjoyable. (It has also left me with the feeling of never ever taking anything for granted.)

4 of that team were to win the European Cup 7 years later and Haffey, MacKay and Crerand were tremendous performers too. (In fact, I think Dunky was a better right back than the man who played in Lisbon.) Just shows what a great manager can do.

It may well be `triumphalist` as you say but my take on that kind of talk is that it is more to do with a low self-esteem. Having just said that, I believe that `triumphalism` is enacted for the same reason so maybe I do agree with you after all 0:-)
