The great United reunion, signing backup keepers

1109

Ronny Deila’s dream of reconstructing the Dundee United team of 2014 is on track as United have agreed terms for the sale of striker Nadir Ciftci, who is set to join Stuart Armstrong and Gary MacKay-Steven in green and white hoops.

United are feeling sore at losing three players to a rival but it could be argued this deal is a positive result for them.  They are no different than Celtic in needing to acquire good players who will enhance their team and generate transfer fees when they leave.

Armstrong and Mackay-Steven gave Celtic a timely boost when they arrived in the team in February.  If Ciftci adapts as quickly he’ll do well.

Signing a backup goalkeeper is a tricky call.  Do you blow a large slice of budget on a genuine contender for the goalkeeper’s jersey, or perhaps promote the next teenage David Marshall?  Both are viable calls.  If we sign Logan Bailly (29) for a fee from Belgian club Leuven the expectation at Lennoxtown is that he will push Craig Gordon.

That would leave us with competition across the field, apart from the left back slot…..

Maybe we should combine a cricket clique with a Hootenanny day and have a fun raising charity cricket day.

Hire a pitch with adjacent bar, borrow a set stumps, a couple of bats, a couple of cups for the ole family jewels, pads etc. A very sociable day overall.

Ferguslie CC would be a decent venue.

  6. Tottenham sign Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid on a deal until 2020.

Saints may take legal action as they believed they had an option to buy the player for £6.8m unless Atletico paid £1.5m to buy back that clause.

Football contracts are so often ignored. Athletic were supposed to pay Southampton £1.5 million if they wanted to sell him to somebody else. They simply did it anyway.

Hopefully they pay Southampton their due now.

I would like to see that go viral .It really does make the point extremely effectively as it appears neutral. Brilliant.

Quite disgraceful headline from the Herald on newsnow re Ciftci signing. I think they are competing with the DR’s ‘bullying’ article. Unashamed anti-Celtic bias.

No need, mate. Simply play it in The Gallowgate. Irn-bru or Magners bottles for bats,Celtic pies instead of balls. Ashtrays as the ‘box’ and two beer crates as the stumps.

Only problem I can see is,aye,we might want to hit the pie as far as possible, but who in their right mind would run after one?

  17. ThompsonTwin on

We have parted company with Matthews, Balde, Fridjonnson, Pukki, do we expect further departures?

Bearing in mind the new intake, Cifti, Janko & possibly Odegaard, will the likes of Stokes, Scepovic, Commons be deemed surplus to requirements – We would receive modest fees for these three, probably £2 million in total.

I like Commons, however I don’t see him fitting in, and like Stokes, he may well become a fringe-player. It also looks like Rogic is going to be given the chance to stake his claim.

Like Pukki, Bangura, Balde and Fridjonnson, there comes a time to cut one’s losses, therefore Scepovic has to go.

Ronny has released a number of young players on loan – he has also said that he will run with a smaller squad – so who is going and when?

  18. It obviously pays for these newspapers to have negative stories about us , the orcs lap it up and we click on them to be outraged.

Stopped even looking at the record more than twenty years ago and stopped taking the Herald when Broadfoot was there, their bias in the sports section had been going on long before him but it was the continual anti Catholic stance they had adopted in the rest of the paper that convinced me to Stop taking it.

It’s silly to complain about Celtic doing such a thing. It’s a fact of footballing life. Teams like Clyde and Airdrie United end up having to sell to the likes of DU, who have to sell to the likes of Celtic, who have to sell to the likes of Southampton, who have to sell to the likes of Manchester United, who have to sell to of Real Madrid.

Club site is showing we have a first team squad of 30.

    GK’s = 2

    DF’s = 11

    MF’s = 13

    FWD’s = 4

Then you can add NC and the new GK.

However a number of players seen to be off on loan and the list has not been updated.

Plus all the forward “stiffs” who have been offloaded at some cost to the balance sheet are gone.

I think we should be running with first team squad of 24 / 26 including 3 GK’s.

After that we should have a recognisable development team with names and positions well known. From what I can see we seen to have a thin development team and a number of local projects in the 1st team squad.

Needs some trimming and a lot of focus.

Not sure why the first team squad has been allowed to become bloated in this way.

Projects out on loan might be part of it but there might also be the case that some local youth projects seem to have been promised first team training in order to get them to sign senior contracts.

Not ready for the 1st team — 12 / 18 months undercooked — so out on loan they go?

Lots of speculation in all of this but my thoughts are that we are not that well organised both at youth level and also the youth to senior transition.

Our poor return regarding 1st team regulars out of the youths over the past 10 years suggests we are not doing very well in this regard.

  29. Just a thought on the Odegaard loan deal: I was watching my youngest (in his Celtic top of course) in training last night and the head coach came up to me and told me about the Odegaard loan possibility. I live in Krakow and the Polish coach is an ex-pro who has played in Spain, so for him to even know about Celtic is good overseas PR for Celtic and highlights our profile and RD credentials even if Odegaard comes or not.

  30. Wes Foderingham deal – £5k p/w which will go up to £8kpw if/when RFC are promoted + £25,000 bonus for every year Rangers are a Prem club

From spfl stats, astonishing if true, at swindon he would be on nowhere near this and they released him!
