The great United reunion, signing backup keepers

1109

Ronny Deila’s dream of reconstructing the Dundee United team of 2014 is on track as United have agreed terms for the sale of striker Nadir Ciftci, who is set to join Stuart Armstrong and Gary MacKay-Steven in green and white hoops.

United are feeling sore at losing three players to a rival but it could be argued this deal is a positive result for them.  They are no different than Celtic in needing to acquire good players who will enhance their team and generate transfer fees when they leave.

Armstrong and Mackay-Steven gave Celtic a timely boost when they arrived in the team in February.  If Ciftci adapts as quickly he’ll do well.

Signing a backup goalkeeper is a tricky call.  Do you blow a large slice of budget on a genuine contender for the goalkeeper’s jersey, or perhaps promote the next teenage David Marshall?  Both are viable calls.  If we sign Logan Bailly (29) for a fee from Belgian club Leuven the expectation at Lennoxtown is that he will push Craig Gordon.

That would leave us with competition across the field, apart from the left back slot…..

    Bgx,

On the evidence that he was ahead of Denayer in the pecking order at Man City and at international level. ???

  2. I Iike the idea that Real Madrid, Man U and Man City are now our feeder clubs.

I suspect fans of Dundee Utd are rather less sanguine about their similar status.

Spare a thought for the young Norwegian. If he does come he’ll miss out on a chance to collect a CL winner’s medal if Real make it through. No way he’d be allowed to play for us against his parent club.

The Development Team is whoever is left out of the first team squad plus whatever youngsters have not been sent out on loan.

Those sent on loan appear to be those who are not even close to a Celtic squad consideration but are too good or too old to benefit from another year with the Development Squad.

McGregor went out on loan, did ok with Notts County, and was given a chance with Celtic (mostly due to the situation Ronny was in) but did not take it first time around (this year will be make or break for him). Others, who seemed more promising, like Atajic, went out on loan and bombed so we cut our losses. Other like McGeouch and Jackson Irvine were 50:50, good enough for the team they were loaned to but not so good that they were battering on the door of the first team squad.

As for Barrowfield, I know the fans want to see the players more often BUT, in these days of social media, it seems best if we kept player misdemeanours away from prying eyes and mobile phone cameras. Our players should only appear in public at organised and chaperoned public events. Let the players train at Lennoxtown but have an open day training session at CP (or Barrowfield) every month or so as a PR exercise.

As for Parkhead Juniors, it has been a long time since the Juniors were used as a route to the Senior game. I’d prefer they were developed in a more sophisticated playing environment. I’d loan a few out to the Dutch Leagues.

Love your outlook on life and your take on ‘our feeder clubs’. It goes to show that schmoozing these ‘super clubs’ can pay dividends on who we can pick up by way of loans or at non-exorbitant transfer fees.

I’ve seen him play twice, but as somebody said I know “feck all about football”.

  8. Re under 20 team

I think other than Liam Henderson. Not enough of our young guys are progressing playing under 20 football,

So Ronnie feels putting them out on loan we can see if they have talent at a higher level, watched a few games 2013/14 season and young twardzik looked good but when he went into 1st team he was found wanting.

  9. Papajoe55..Comnon sense says if our under 20 players were good enough they would be in the first team…It Really is That Simple..IMO..

I can live with most of your comments apart from the first paragraph.

I want to see the club having a full blown development team as the pinnacle of a full blown, international class youth set up.

As I have mentioned before I see no structure to our academy / youth set up.

All I I see is a bit of one upmanship with the TFOD II and how many players we can get into the Scottish U17 and a Quarter team.

Then there is the lavish praise on here for everybody’s favourite son as they play one great youth game every couple of months.

And what do we end up with?

Has beens, never wizzers, ego trippers, fan dancers …

We seen to produce them by the dozen year after year.

To be this bad we must be doing something very wrong.

Currently who do we have coming through?

Last season I could make a case for DF and LH making a break from the youth team pack into the 1st team squad — but even that is not the complete picture as LH seems to have a lot of growing up to do.

Who will come through this season?

Will they turn out to be better than McGregor and McGeouch?

Both seemingly world beaters when they play for anyone but U.S.

My fear is that we attract to many fans and supporters into our youth team.

That is players who think they have made it when they get a full time gig with the club.

My fear that to these players that is their finish line not their starting gate.

    Any thoughts on this?

Everything – almost everything – about football has been changed forever by bosman and TV monies.

The days of European champion teams made up of bhoys from the locality will never return.

Henrik will be last and closest thing we have to have a world superstar being a Celt for life or close to it.

We’re a huge club in a wee country with an average league. Until there’s an NFL style franchise deal across Europe that we’re part of, we need to cut out cloth to suit.

We need to hussle, wheel, deal and punch above our weight. That will involve far less neat and well established patterns in terms of player recruitment, ownership and retention.

Denayer was a classic example. So may be the young Viking. If he comes to CP and lights the place up, inspires my son and tips the balance towards success…..so be it.

Like denayer, both sides will hopefully be left with fond memories and respect that will endure for years to come.

The one constant and throwback to simpler days of old? Us. The fans. We need to accept that we are the anomaly – albeit an inspiring, idealistic and essential one – in this fast changing world that is football.

    HH jamesgang

PS spare a thought for say, the Belgians, in all of this……most incredible crop of youth in their history. Helps the national squad no end. But what good does it do to their domestic game?

For Belgium read…..Portugal, Serbia, Poland, Sweden…..Norway!

Today was a great day. To be honest I was worried about getting a GAA club for Easter 2016.

To be frank all the club said was “if they are making the effort to come over, there will be no charge.”

I realise it is a different sport and im even more ignorant about it than i am about football(not a dig at TET just being self-deprecating) but i had been looking at the NHL recently and noticed the distinct lack of players aged from about 19-21.

There were a few scattered about in the leagues playing squads but not many and i wondered if players of that age were viewed as not being mature enough yet physically and mentally to compete properly over there?

Like i said……completely different sport, but do these teams recognise that the majority of the up and coming youngsters need more time to become men before competing in order to give them the best possible chance of making it?

There seems to be a chasm to leap here from the youths to 1st team and perhaps loaning these lads out really is the way to go, not only giving them experience but getting them back a year or 2 later, more physically and mentally developed.

  17. Lots of talk about the ‘youth players’ tonight. As far as I can see sadly only Miller, Henderson and KT have a chance. Keep hearing KT is ready but to be honest from what I’ve seen I’m not hopeful (admittedly only a few games). Henderson has a chance and if Calvin Miller puts in the work and effort on and off the field he’ll be a player.

The rest I don’t hold out much hope for.

A lot of the Celtic ‘youth’ players are into their 20s as well. If you haven’t started to break through at 18-19 the chances of being good enough to one day hold down a hooped jersey on a regular basis are slim.

Dont know if any of you Bhoys have had the misfortune to visit the new Southern General hospital. It is a very impressive building from the outside but as a hospital thats where it ends On the inside the hospital feeling disappears and it is more like a giant airport.

While visiting a friend there I have yet to see any of the doctors. nursing staff use the hand cleaners as they went from room to room. Most had a cough which one of staff blamed the air condition. My friend died in there!!

Your post reminds me of a conversation with my brother-in-law who is younger than me and also a Celtic fanatic. He is a high-powered vice president of a well known American company. Over a boozy dinner around 2001 we had a highly charged debate about Celtic and what the future held for us. As he was a highly regarded CEO for a British company at the time and had won a court case against a former Celtic CEO who had worked for a major Supermarket, I told him that if I ever won a huge Euromillions jackpot, I would buy Celtic and appoint him CEO. Within Five minutes of having “appointed” him, I sacked him because being ‘realistic’ he told me that Celtic would never reach another European final. He bowed to my greater judgement two years later when we went to Seville.

The point of this is that I firmly believe with every fibre of my being that Celtic willnwin the Champions League again some day. We are a magical in the same way as, “Build a stadium and they will come.”
