The great United reunion, signing backup keepers

1109

Ronny Deila’s dream of reconstructing the Dundee United team of 2014 is on track as United have agreed terms for the sale of striker Nadir Ciftci, who is set to join Stuart Armstrong and Gary MacKay-Steven in green and white hoops.

United are feeling sore at losing three players to a rival but it could be argued this deal is a positive result for them.  They are no different than Celtic in needing to acquire good players who will enhance their team and generate transfer fees when they leave.

Armstrong and Mackay-Steven gave Celtic a timely boost when they arrived in the team in February.  If Ciftci adapts as quickly he’ll do well.

Signing a backup goalkeeper is a tricky call.  Do you blow a large slice of budget on a genuine contender for the goalkeeper’s jersey, or perhaps promote the next teenage David Marshall?  Both are viable calls.  If we sign Logan Bailly (29) for a fee from Belgian club Leuven the expectation at Lennoxtown is that he will push Craig Gordon.

That would leave us with competition across the field, apart from the left back slot…..

Tennis is the ONLY challenger to football’s ‘beautiful game’ tag.

However just as football must rule out diving and cheating, so tennis must get rid of the ‘screaming’ and the two-handed shots.

Unlike football where the indiscretions are usually perpetrated by rogue individuals – in tennis these abominations are coached into players.

The two-hander/screaming were first introduced in the womens’ game – there is no need for either – Steffi Graff

Steffi Graff had a powerful game without the need to scream or use two hands.

assuming that Ciftci now signs, what would be our starting 11?

for the back 4, VVD is a certain (as long as he is here), and I think the new guy, Boyata, will be good, and needs to start. The only issue is Janko or ML (for now ML, but this kid looks good!). And I would like to see a new LB.

NB and SB seem to have the 2 holding midfield places sewn up (with LH as back up) …. although you all know I think we need someone with more ball skills than SB in this role.

SJ seems a starter, (but needs to start putting away a higher percentage of his chances) and GMS is coming on (and he is the sort of player I would pay to watch). I think JF will likely start, as RD seems to see something there). And I like LG, but think NC might be better suited to playing the lone man up front …

So, the biggest issues for me, are (i) leaving out LG – who has shown he will score for us, and (ii) SA … who I think has the best football brain (along with NB)…..

We could play SA on the left of the 3, but I think he is more important to us in the middle.

I’m still not convinced by this 4-2-3-1 … it means that the 3 have to do a lot of work, going back and forth, and last season, of those playing the 3, only SJ was fit enough, which meant that, in effect, we ended up playing almost 4-2-4, and our midfield were outnumbered too often ….

we got away with it in the SPL, but paid for it in Europe.

So maybe a 4 – 3 -3, with SB, NB and SA in the middle, and a pick of three from SJ, NC, LG, GMS and JF up front, but with SJ dropping back into a more conventional 442 when needed.

Sadly I reckon that if you have cash, any bar will be a Celtic bar on request. Have a good time, and tell Olivia not to bring her red white and blue uniform home from Tesco…

There is a big difference between Operating Profit and Net Profit – it would not be unusual for a Operating Profit to be drastically reduced after tax and interest payments

I believe these slippery gits will get away with it, companies tend to, i know each case has its own merits but take vodafone for example they got away with billions in tax, hunco is a drop in the ocean in tax avoidance

A true Celtic legend, my all time favourite description came from Billy here in Perth, “Celtic is not a big football club, Celtic is a feeling”

I have never heard anyone describe our club more aptly.

  12. Ten years since I first looked in on here , in the aftermath of black Sunday . I was going to write a long post but it’s too early in the day for melancholy. So it’s just a big thank you to Paul67 and all the wonderful contributors past and present. Genuinely feel a better person for the journey.

Mike in toronto. We havnt seen Bitton yet I dont know the reason why not ? as we are at home I would start with Griffiths. Who will be at Centre Back with Boyoto is a bit of a concern.I would give Janko some game time at Right midfield and also give Cifti the last half hour or so. It would be good if we could rack up plenty of goals and make the second leg just a formality. H.H.

re: two handed back hand … my memory is not as good as it once was, but I believe the first 2 handed backhand was used by Vivian McGrath (in the 1930’s) … and, although you could be excused for thinking he was a lady because of his name, he was in fact a man! and an australian one to boot….
