The great United reunion, signing backup keepers

1109

Ronny Deila’s dream of reconstructing the Dundee United team of 2014 is on track as United have agreed terms for the sale of striker Nadir Ciftci, who is set to join Stuart Armstrong and Gary MacKay-Steven in green and white hoops.

United are feeling sore at losing three players to a rival but it could be argued this deal is a positive result for them.  They are no different than Celtic in needing to acquire good players who will enhance their team and generate transfer fees when they leave.

Armstrong and Mackay-Steven gave Celtic a timely boost when they arrived in the team in February.  If Ciftci adapts as quickly he’ll do well.

Signing a backup goalkeeper is a tricky call.  Do you blow a large slice of budget on a genuine contender for the goalkeeper’s jersey, or perhaps promote the next teenage David Marshall?  Both are viable calls.  If we sign Logan Bailly (29) for a fee from Belgian club Leuven the expectation at Lennoxtown is that he will push Craig Gordon.

That would leave us with competition across the field, apart from the left back slot…..

kevin hughes … that guy wasn’t from Canada … he’s from Alberta! (technically, part of Canada, I guess… but they are their own special breed!) I’m heading there in two weeks to visit my mum (who lives there) …. I have to get my passport updated, and buy a gun (or else they dont let you into the province!)

Mike in T. which end of toronto are you as we will be heading over end of august. probably hit the bramalea club as been there before

  9. Ciftci is a perfect signing for us. Couldn’t be happier. We needed a big, strong, talented center forward and Ronnie has found one. Bring on the qualifiers.

kevin … I’m central/east TO … but TO is pretty easy to get around in …. and if you are downtown, both the downtown club and the scarborough club (home of CQN’s Teuchter and Torontony and others) are both really good places with good lads ….

As I dont get back to Scotland as often now, I haven’t had the chance to put many faces to CQN blog names, but so always enjoy meeting CQN’ers when they are in TO ……

on that note, just got confirmation of my tickets for the hearts game in September (thanks, T!!!), so looking forward to meeting some of you then!

    Well done

clogher … that’s too bad. but in September, our plan is to fly into dublin, then head straight to glasgow/paisley for a few days … see the game, and see some family … then head back to Ireland for 10 days or so . spend a few days in Dublin, and then travel around a bit … cant wait to see the west coast, and see the old family place in donegal, and would like to spend some time in the 6 counties …..so, you may just get a knock on your door!

  15. kevin hughes on

Will definitely be spending some time downtown so will look up the club there. never tried scarborough but who knows

  18. Got a confession to make , it’s time to come out the closet .

I love cricket and can’t wait for the ashes to start.

borgo67 … when I was in Oz at xmas, I spend a good bit of time with KT’s family who are all cricket mad (even the ladies! ) .. and it was on TV all the time! . by the end of the trip, I was starting to understand it, and even quite enjoyed it!

    so, the newest CQN clique…

Exactly Canamalar, its the perceived menace/threat and its ownership that needs a light shone on it,

    and that article does.

it highlights the menace behind the toxic cheat and the problems met doing their accounts and it is doing it in a publication for accountants(ie professionally shouting there is a barge pole we put down, this is why we are not touching them now,if you take up said barge pole this is the type of non-accounting grief(atop the accounting grief) you can expect-imo:-))

Whos place in midfield would Odegaard take as he is an attacking midfielder ? H.H.

  22. Well, if the ashes was 6 months ago I’d back Australia for another whitewash.

I now think it will be 3-2 to Australia.

I love cricket.Have a ticket for the 5th ( and hopefully decisive) Test at The Oval.

  24. For those heading over to Dublin for the Centenary celebrations from Glasgow, a mix of Ryanair (Fri 25 March) and Aerlingus (Monday 28 March) will set you back around £100.

    Return from Edinburgh is £68.

Please note that Ryanair are not currently announcing flights beyond Easter Sunday

My dad spent some time in London after the war and would pass the oval everyday going to work and eventually started to take an interest. I have never been to a test match but have watched everyone since the mid 1970s.

JFH … I was wondering the same place … I haven’t seen much of him (just clips and hightlights, but I wondered if he would be in the SJ role) …..

I think RD is building a good core squad of about 19/20, and how he is able to use them/rotate them to adjust as necessary and/or cope with injuries will be key to our success this season.
