The joy of living today, tomorrow

893

After writing a piece on our European season for the forthcoming CQN Magazine I read the excellent contribution from SFTB this morning.  It is only natural that we live in the moment but for the last 70 years of the 20th century Celtic fans, more than anyone else, viewed each day in its historical context.

Older generations would have had little choice but to keep their history alive during the lost decades between the mid-20s and mid-60s.  7-1 and the Coronation Cup, each magnificent and modest in their own way, were the highlights, while the legend of Jimmy McGrory more than anyone established what was known as the Celtic Way.

Then came Lisbon.  In an instant, all that history was eclipsed.  New heroes, one of whom recalled to me he was told Celtic would amount to nothing with him in the team by a ‘fan’ a few years earlier, changed everything, but for this most historical of clubs, the inheritance was not all positive.

If Jimmy McGrory established Celtic as a remarkable goal-scoring team, the incessant attacking that afternoon in Lisbon cast an unattainable shadow.  It proved Celtic could win the European Cup by playing fabulous football but set a template we were cursed to attempt to follow.

The rules of the off-field game have changed often since those days, no more so than this season, when Celtic grew from a team who were penned into their own penalty box by HJK Helsinki, who needed a goal to knock us out of Europe in August, from a team the Turin media were joyous when Juventus beat home and away.  Thoughts of ‘Maybe we could win this” have since emerged in Turin.

I’ve loved every minute of this season, from the last minute header in Moscow to the last minute header in Dingwall. Adding context to it is a joy for one of our tomorrows.

    To Kojo @17.18

In your long paean of self praise (which your ma must have telt ye is no praise at all, but, I guess, you must take it from one of the few sources where it is offered) you make a startlingly simplistic point.

You assert, as far as your prose can be dissected, that those who compare our position with the teams from the past suffer from the Swiss disease (I would have suspected arrogance rather than nostalgia to be that country’s vice). You seem to be flogging your “judge them in the present and only take into account the very recent past”

A toddler making his way in the world, encountering a new phenomenon, has no yardstick against which to measure. Is that too hot or too cold? Should I be frightened or is that animal harmless? Experience teaches you that a shark is more dangerous than a dog which is more dangerous than a small bird.

How do you know that a player has had a bad game unless we measure his current performance against our memory of what he has delivered before or, if he is new to us, against what we can expect from previous inhabitants of his position? Without a past to measure against, your judgement is guesswork.

No one speaks of the wisdom of children or advocates the introduction of government by Paedocracy. Neither would I want my football judgements to be made without reference to our history and past performances.

Otherwise, you will have an infant tantruming and wanting to throw away all who offend him, regardless of how valuable they are to him.

Like swapping Aiden Mcgeady for Liam Lawrence, for instance. Or wanting to keep Adam Virgo and Mark Millar but get rid of Sean Maloney.

I can only conclude that a dose of Swiss disease is needed to counter your tendency to be your own yes man.

Take a toblerone or a Swiss roll twice a day. Dress up in a Swiss guard’s uniform (you’ll blend in nicely on the streets of AIrdrie) and get yourself a cuckoo clock (at the very least, it will remind you of your own temperament).

P.S. If you think the hard headed do not indulge in nostalgia, I suggest you watch Monty Python’s 4 Yorkshiremen sketch again.

Why the new set up doesn’t suit the lower leagues …I don’t know

Particularly the current div3 teams …they’ll be able to rip off the Hun fans again next season

Btw what is this bollox about a Hun reserve team …joke ..they on have decent senior team

Brilliant Barca! And AC Milan are no mugs. Anyways hope all our players are watching, listening and learning. Great as Barca can be, their workrate is immense yet again. As was ours in both matches against them. Let us bring back application for the game against Aberdeen. Hope Barca go through now, keep the possibility of them playing at Wembley.

  10. Think Owen Archdeacon was a bit like Messi. Y’know same build, dark hair, same hight…..aye, a lot of similarities there…..now I saw someone asking about Messi…….right where’s that can of Charger…..

I don’t know what age you are but trust me our throw-ins were no better under Big Jock.

It’s something that has followed Celtic teams down through decades.

*corners tae, I remember my da saying we were brutal at corners, my response was what about Charles Patrick’s 2 at Brockville and big Billys against dunfermline and vodvodina, his response was and how come that’s the only 4 you can quote.

  13. EDB,

I have to agree with you about us and shys. Ever since I started watching, we have never seemed to master the art of throwing the ball regularly to a Celtic player.
