The opportunity to get players we otherwise couldn’t afford

EBTs “Gave us the opportunity to get players we otherwise couldn’t afford.”

With those words in the Glasgow High Court witness box yesterday, Sir David Murray laid bare the sporting advantage question of Rangers EBTs. EBTs gave Rangers a sporting advantage. If the loans were illegally executed, the club gained an illegal sporting advantage.

At the time of the Lord Nimmo Smith Commission the payments were regarded as legal, the Commission therefore ruled that no illegal sporting advantage was gained, as any other club could have acted in the same manner. The Supreme Court will have the final say on the legality later this year.

You and I know better than to hazard a guess as to which way that decision will go, but it will be worth tuning in for.

That aside, former vice-chairman of Rangers, Donald Findlay, representing former chairman of Rangers, Craig Whyte, appeared to enjoy questioning Sir David, another former chairman of Rangers, more than old Zsa Zsa in the witness box enjoyed being questioned.

Win a chance to play on Celtic Park this Monday, 1 May 2017

I expect the number of us who have pulled on a Celtic shirt and played at Celtic Park will be very few, but………

There is a club sponsors’ game on the hallowed turf this Monday, 1 May 2017, and those incredible people at Intelligent Car Leasing have given me one of their places in the line-up.

We have an ebay auction here for the spot, benefiting your very own Celtic FC Foundation. It was launched a few moments ago and ends tomorrow around noon, so the number of bidders will be limited.

You will enjoy the whole playing at Celtic Park experience, just as Quinn, McGrory, Johnstone, McNeill, Dalglish and Larsson did before you. You will make fantastic memories, you’ll bore your friends with the photos for months. You will look back on this when you account for the great moments in your life.

Celtic kit will be provided, although you’ll need to bring your own boots and shin guards.

Opportunities like this come along when the pitch is about to be replaced, and that happen only twice in the previous 20 years.

This is a 24 hour listing and the clock is ticking. Bid for yourself, or for someone special.

  3. Celtic youth cup hero Aidan McIlduff has been told to find himself a new club in the summer.

The left-back, 20, has told the Scottish Sun that he was informed a few weeks ago that he will be bombed out when his contract expires in June.

It is a shattering blow for the youngster, who has emerged through the Celtic youth ranks and has made a big enough impression to have been capped by Scotland at Under-18 level.

McIlduff revealed how Celtic head of youth development Chris McCart told him the painful news that he is considered not to be a future first-teamer at the club.

The left-back bounced back by delivering a man-of-the-match display and scoring one of the goals in Celtic’s 3-0 Youth Cup final triumph against Rangers on Wednesday night.

“You have to enjoy nights like Wednesday and not take them for granted,”McIlduff explained to the Scottish Sun. “It’s been a tough couple of weeks for me, since I was told I’d be leaving.

“Chris McCart sat me down and basically said there wouldn’t be a first-team opportunity for me and that’s fine. I know that’s the nature of football.

“Part of me saw it coming and when Calvin Miller got his chance, playing out of position at left-back, I did wonder.

“Because I’ve been associated with Celtic for so long it’s obviously been hard to take but I know I need to use it as motivation to drive me on.”

McIlduff, who has spent the second half of the season on loan at Queen’s Park, is drawing inspiration from the example of Andy Robertson, who has thrived since failing to make the grade at Celtic.

The Scotland left-back is coveted by the Premier League giants following his fine form for Hull in recent seasons.

Of course,it will be a shame if it is elsewhere, but players who can play left-back to a high standard are rarely short of offers. It’s a very specialised and demanding role, especially in today’s game which frequently demands participation at both ends of the park.

  10. Re McGregor, I’ve always been a fan. He’s a quintessentially modern player, pass and move, keeps up with play, can run all day, will take the ball in tight situations even when having a poor match, and has a great touch and can get you s goal. Importantly for a Celtic player he takes responsibility on the ball when things aren’t going well for the team. Of course that hasn’t happened much this season. His weakness is in defensive situations. He isn’t a ball winner and lacks the physical presence to stamp his authority on a game.

Recently Brendan has played him as a no10 and dropped Armstrong back into the no6 position. Notably Armstrong hasn’t had a shot on target in the last two matches. I think Brendan trusts Armstrong to do the dirty, unseen side of the game more. Calllum had a great game last Sunday. He/We picked up on the weakness they had on their left side. Halliday started the match to give their left back protection but Callum cleverly occupied the pocket of space in that area which caused them a lot of problems.

Agreed. If he goes on to do a Andy Robertson we can’t complain.

We have our left back for the next ten years in the team. It’s better to have veteran players like Izzy backing him up.

Young lad will get a move to an SPFL team I’m sure. The rest is up to him.

  14. Magnificentseven on

Aidan’s problem is that he is actually a few weeks older than Kieran Tierney, therefore very unlikely to improve past him.

Good luck to him, he is good enough to have a decent career

  15. I was impressed with young Macllduff I would think a player with his skills would be snapped up quickly, more so as some are saying him being a left back, Iv only seen him twice mind you but what I saw I liked, no moving up front that lad Michael Johnstone he def. looks like a prospect , but then most of that young team had a kind of quality Street look about it, it took me back years watching that game the other night, when I used to go now and again to watch a friend of mine playing for the quality street gang, Tony McBride, the things that boy could do with an opponent was rediculess, unfortunately the wee man chose the wrong path, I still see him now and again, Celtic daft and a wonderful wonderful person, if he only new then what he knows now, like many or all of us for that matter :)

Brendan Rodgers demonstrated that not all Celtic cup wins over Rangers are equal yesterday when he slated his club’s under-17 side despite their triumph in the Glasgow Cup final. Keep up to date with all our sport news on The Scotsman’s Sport page on Facebook The under-17s won the trophy with a 2-1 victory at Firhill last week but Rodgers said it was a “poor” game in which the standard was “awful”.

On Thursday Celtic’s under-20s defeated Rangers 3-0 in the final of the Scottish Youth Cup at Hampden. While Rodgers enthused about the performances of a number of his club’s youths at the National Stadium, declaring 6ft 7in keeper Conor Hazard to have a “big future”, comparing full-back Anthony Ralston to Danny McGrain and stating forward Mikey Johnston was a “real big talent at 17”, he was damning about what he had witnessed the previous week. READ MORE – Scott Brown ‘most influential player in Scotland’ “The under-17s final was a poor game. In terms of Scottish football the standard was awful. “There were some good players in both teams and the kids won, which was great, and there was two or three moments of quality. But the overall level of quality wasn’t good. I have seen some good kids up here and it’s a good level. But they would have to play better football than that.

“The under-20s the other night was a good game. They showed good tactical awareness and played at a good level, in terms of speed, organisation with their pressing, they got the ball back quickly and were fast getting forward.

“It was good. The progress will come with the 17s but we need to influence it even further down to eventually produce it at the top level. There’s a big difference if you want to produce players for Scotland that allows the national team to do well. “I’m new here but it’s my job to help. We have brilliant coaches here at youth level with Chris [McCart] overseeing it, Tam McIntyre and Michael [O’Halloran] with the 17s, their assistants, they have great enthusiasm and energy. But we’re trying to take a different path.”

I also really enjoy your stats (or numbers)

Now Calum William McGregor ( nothing against William, it’s my middle name – blame my maw:-))

Can I ask a question, how does pass stats vary from 65% – 92% come in at 89% :-)

There are many weaknesses in his game – as highlighted by TheTimReaper, I believe he wanders out of position too frequently, look at his creation stats, not great in my view for a central midfielder,

Now the crux, yes he is a decent squad player for the SPFL

    But

If Celtic want to progress in Europe, we need better quality, I believe Calum’s position would be that under most threat ?

    Just my opinion :-)

Another thing he is shortly 24, I believe young Ryan Christie has far greater potential – is 2 years younger, and for me creates far more
