The players “who got us there” for Sunday

268

Neil Lennon left us a teaser after Sunday’s victory over Kilmarnock, informing us that the players who got us to the Scottish Cup Final would get their chance to represent us in the Final, not necessarily those who transformed our play in the last two games.

We can safely discount Forster, Simunovic, Arzani (yes, I’d forgotten too), Hayes, Bayo, Bolingoli and Shved, all of whom were part of this Scottish Cup campaign but are no longer at the club.  James Forrest is not fit and Leigh Griffiths is currently fourth choice striker, so unlikely to be considered unless/until we need a late goal.

That leaves five possibilities: Ryan Christie, Tom Rogic, Olivier Ntcham, Scott Bain and Scott Brown.

Christie has  unfinished business in the Scottish Cup after suffering multiple fractures to his face in the 2019 semi-final that kept him out of the final.  I expect we will see him instead of Jeremie Frimpong at right mid.

Conor Hazard has not put a glove wrong in his two outings and there is no reason to believe that would change on Sunday, but Neil may prefer Scott Bain, or, conversely, give Vasilis Barkas his Scottish Cup debut.  No idea how this will go.

I would be amazed if David Turnbull did not start.  In the space of a week he has made the central attacking mid position his own, Hampden specialist Tom Rogic is there if needed late in the game, although perhaps not for penalties.

Hampden is a big pitch and Ismaila Soro has the energy to cover it.  He suffered cramp against Lille but his two outings last week will fortify him.  Still, I expect the captain will get the nod.

So who is on the ‘wantaway’ list?

If you can tell us who is not on list you could tell who is? Alternatively if nowt is known say nothing

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Christie, Ajer, Edouard and Ntcham all want away.

Otherwise, they would be signing new deals on improved terms.

  2. Celtic are close to agreeing a new contract with goalkeeper Conor Hazard.

@SkySportsNews understands the club want to tie him up on a long-term deal with a significant wage increase.

The Hoops will still assess goalkeeping options in next month’s transfer window.

Hi Jobo, thanks for doing the MOTM/POTY thing for us all

Strange how we’ve gone from the lowest to the highest response inside a week.

Laxalt at No 1 is interesting and for me it flatters him a bit.

But I guess you’ll say that these things even themselves out over a season.

Welsh made his debut at Hamilton in a similar role played by Ajer on Sunday.

What’s a right back role at Celtic? – some supporters see a three when there’s a four and advice versa.

I didn’t call them ‘failures’, other posters might, either way lets just say they’ve both had difficulties

playing for Celtic this season on the right flank, to such an extent we’re now trying Ajer.

  5. Christie, Ajer, Edouard and Ntcham are the likely want aways but there may others. I may be wrong but I reckon McGregor is a possibility. Equally his drop in form maybe due to overuse.

We have recently heard Elhammed also wants away

  6. ZIGGYDOC1 on 15TH DECEMBER 2020 1:42 PM

    Totally agree.

When we have CB cover Ajer needs to be at RB.

Pace, strength, height, skills, determination and he’s a leader on the field.

Ha! Don’t know if enjoyed is the right word as it’s ultimately incredibly depressing :-)

Didn’t open the link (can’t bring myself to contribute 0.7 pence to the ET coffers)

but the story made me smile.

So Stewart Robertson wants an “overhaul” at Hampden?

Well we all know what that usually precedes ….

  9. I keep reading posts about Broonie having to cover for the likes of Christie, complete and utter bollix, they are totally different players, play completely different roles in the team.

One reason that our defence has looked solid and Hazard has had virtually nothing to do is down to Soro being in the right place at the right time, he is composed and knows how to read the game in front of him, I know that Broonie does also but his timing is way out these days, hence the defence have looked bad with him in front of them, but Lenny gets paid the big bucks so we will see, loyalty would normally cost you your job when it goes tits up, but he knows that his job is safe even if the farts beat us, what a way to run a football club, especially one who has, at least the support has ambitions of the dominance that we do, given our size and funding.

    Perfectly summed up

  11. I said the other day that Sevco are not as good and we are not as bad as many have suggested. I think a similar comment could be made about Broonie. He is MAYBE not as good as he was but he is still a lot better than some are claiming.

  12. I cannot wait to Sunday to see the Glasgow Celtic.

RC – The referee from huns game on sunday saw the More or less incident but took his time to do anything, almost as if he or someone in his ear thought book him as it will take away any future probe into the incident.

But hey I’m not a cynic so I could not possibly comment.

    D :)

  13. Two thoughts:

    a) The ref booked Morelos for jumping into the United player ie he genuinely didn`t see the forearm smash;

    b) If Morelos was in good form, he would not have been cited.

maybe put McGregor at left back and Johnston on his own up front?

Rangers have accepted the 2 game ban for Morelos for elbowing on Mark Connelly on Sunday.

Genuine evidence gather suggestion for any CQNer who has the time.

Since beginning of last season ….

    a) How many times has a player playing in Scotland been retrospectively red carded against Celtic.

Impact – Celtic denied repeated opportunities to play against 10 men.

    b) How many times has a Sevco player been retrospectively red carded against Scottish opposition.

Impact – Sevco opponents denied repeated opportunities to play against 10 men.

    Safe inferences

    a) for WHATEVER reason referees are less likely to send off Celtic’s opponents on match days for red card offences

    b) for WHATEVER reason referees are less likely to send off Sevco players on match days for red card offences

Get it out there lacing the narrative before 02 January.

Meanwhile those masonic cretins at Hampden project this retrospective process as evidence that their disciplinary framework is robust ….

…. When it proves quite the opposite

  22. in my opinion, the Scottish Cup Final is a distraction from what we all really want, as was the Europa League and the League Cup if we’re honest,

however if we win as we know – 4 consecutive trebles – a record that will never be beaten in this country – unless we do it, bragging rights guaranteed

that aside, its still a red herring, what we all really wanted / really want is the magical 10,

I don’t think we will get it now,

its back to being a Dream, like it was 4 or 5 years ago,

Dreams sometimes come true so we are not completely dead in the water,

however it should never have been downgraded to that status, in August it was a tangible reality,

heads will have to roll at some point,

a Spanner in the Works at Ibrox would help

Thought I’d watch Sportscene at the weekend seeing as we won, hadn’t watched it in ages, couldn’t get beyond sevco’s ‘wonder goal’, they have lost all sense of objectivity, won’t be back, Celtic TV for me from now on
