The spreadsheet on file at every club

550

There is a spreadsheet on file at every club with the anticipated sale value of each player on it.  This value often has nothing to do with how important the player is to the club, or even how good he is, it is a hard assessment of what the market will pay.

Kristoffer Ajer, for example, could end up at a tier one club next season, but his price tag will be inhibited by only having 12 months left on his Celtic contract.  James Forrest is also a talent and has two years remaining on his current deal.  James, though, will turn 30 in July.  The time Spurs managers travel to Glasgow to watching his passed.

Younger players with plenty on their contracts are not assured money either.  Ismaila Soro (22) has three years left on his contract but the spreadsheet at Celtic is unlikely to have a figure as high as we paid for him last year; Ismaila just has not played enough football to merit a reflective increase in value.

Market health is also a factor.  There is seemingly endless supply of debt to those tier one clubs, but the game in most of Europe is on its knees.  What would we expect from a French club for the likes of Olivier Ntcham, after the collapse of their TV deal?

Which brings us Patryk Klimala.  I like Patryk, his willingness to show for the ball and bust a lung to get back and find space was a refreshing change of pace from much of what we watched this season.  Various coaches didn’t think he had what it takes for Celtic, so his chances were limited and an exit increasingly likely.

We paid £3.5m for him; I expected to collect around a third of that when he moved on, not the entire sum we got back from New York Red Bulls.  That’s nothing, to the £10m Bayer Leverkusen paid for Jeremie Frimpong in January, a player I wanted dropped and replaced.  The keeper of Celtic’s spreadsheet has enjoyed updating a column this week.

I wonder if New York or Bayer want a goalkeeper with Champions League and European international experience?

    ………………

My local doent have a Beer Garden but can put out 3 or 4 tables Outside on the pavement…as it does tend to do in nice weather, but I dont think my local will open this Monday, as things stand, because IF there are customers drinking Alcohol OUTside…and it rains those customers can NOT take their Alcoholic drinks INside…taht gives the Punter and the Landlord a wee problem ?

My pub Gov will probably NOT open up this Monday as its not really worth his while, as he can only cater for maybe 3 or 4 small tables OUTside…so I expect him to wait until May 17th ?

Ah Sorry, yes I thought you were referring to the whole blog, we had wires crossed

Don’t see how NL having Gary Parker back would have helped. He seemed to have been the main protagonist in the Easter rd debacle according to reports.

  6. So,

In my nice kept are, with vast majority retirees, the creeping flags issue is becoming a thing.

    That’s a fair point you made😂

  8. Patrick Roberts getting a full 3 minutes as a sub by Rooney at Derby County, Replaces Shinnie. If Rotherham can get their act together in the last few games, both players may find themselves in League One next season. Cheeky wee bid for both by the Hoops?

GGH- The story I heard was Parker is not welcome at CP,I think he mouthed off at Lawwell, when he was there with Hibs.

  13. David Moyes talking about an EPL2 in England to include Celtic & *Rangers.

    How would they do?

Right at this moment in time, the big two in Scotland are probably mid-table English Championship class.

Aberdeen & Hibs would probably be able to stay up in League One.

The rest split between mid to lower League 2 & the National League.

That is the where we are – of course in the case of the ‘big two’, given access to the lucrative EPL-type TV money, that could change.

In a new EPL2, the Scottish ‘big2’ would probably be around mid-table, in the short-term anyway. How would fans take their team probably only winning 50% of games and having no European involvement?

Would there still be full-houses & waiting-lists for Season Tickets?

  14. lets all do the huddle on

the talk about how we would do in some sort of scottish english league just now is totally irrelevant

all these commentators saying if we were stuck in an english league just now we would finish mid table etc totally miss the point

the point is that if we had access to the same level of funds then in time we would be able to build a much better team (probably with no wee scottish waifs in it) so would be able to compete

but it is a valid question to ask about what our attendences would be if we were mid table in such a league that is unlikely to have the big english guns in it

but then again even though we have 53000 season ticket holders these days we are lucky if 35000 of them actually turn up for most of the games pre-covid

Our last 2 home league games before lockdown in the league were Kilmarnock (3-1) and Saint Mirren (5-0 LG Hattrick).

Both games had over 59,000 attendance, and picture on the day shows the place rammed full. My gauge all the time is the Lisbo Lions stand, when we are selling that out right upto the segregation spot.

Games I went to during the season i thought were very decently physically attended.

On fire Eddie and Leigh in those final games, I would be amazed if anyone who was there looked and thought we wont do the ten with these player, that manager, those coaches,

The novelty factor, the excitement of playing new opponents on a weekly basis, would sustain interest during the settling in period until Celtic are back in Europe.

The idea that Celtic would languish in mid table mediocrity is rubbish.

Rather than ask how the old firm would get on in the EPL why now ask how the likes of Liverpool or Arsenal on Man U would fare in the SPL.

well, ignore the official attendence for a start – that says how many tickets have been sold, not how many have actually turned up. our eyes are a better judge of the actual attendence, especially in all seater stadiums.

and as for selling out the tickets right up to the segregation – the thing about that is that the sections beside the segregation mostly arent season tickets seats – they are for sale on an individual game basis so if someone goes out their way to pay 30 quid for a game in a few days time then they are almost certainly going to turn up so thats why that section is full.

its season ticket holders that dont turn up to every game that means the 59000 number isnt right (thats not a criticism, just an observation, i might miss 1 or 2 games a season as well for various reasons )

  21. I would love to see Celtic play in a different league for a variety of reasons. The main one would be to escape from the sectarian mire that the old Rankers embroiled us in. We would blossom and soon become a top team in whatever set up it would be. Celtic have a universal appeal based on a mixture of Scottish / Irish charm. The Rankers, old or new, have a very limited appeal based on what they hate. They would be mediocre at best. I wish, I wish – imagine no longer being in the same league – oh sweet dreams.

Correct about ST holders missing games, if I can’t make a game I try and gets friends of mine or my daughter’s to attend. However even a free ticket for the likes of playing Hamilton is a big ask.

Must be years and years ago since I was able to attend all the games😵

    ——————-

Yes of course, and I alluded to that in my last post – but then all other teams, our direct opponents, in whichever league we may join would have access to the same level of funds from the kitty.

What then makes the difference is the added value – e.g. attendance figures, commercial deals & sponsorship.

That brings us to the next point of fan satisfaction – will 53k season tickets & 60k crowds be the norm in a league where our chances of winning are at much greater odds than they currently are? Will the same level of commercial deals & sponsorship be maintained as we move from top-dogs in Scotland, to one of many in England?

Will the fare on offer be seen as mediocre by fans used to success and European football every year?Of course having no European football income will to an extent offset the bigger TV payout.

No easy answers to this conundrum – in any case it looks like we will be STUCK, for the want of a better word, in Scotland for the foreseeable future

The idea that Celtic would languish in mid table mediocrity is rubbish.

    ———————–

I refer you to my post @ 6:51

Playing in EPL2 would be difficult for both Celtic & *Rangers – a points total that delivers 6th/7th place might not be a mediocre achievement. At least six of our opponents will be in receipt of ‘parachute payments’ from EPL1 – these payments last three years.

So how can anyone say with certainty how five years of winning nothing and with no European football will play out to supporters used to winning and having European football every year.

the plus points about playing in the scottish league

    – most seasons (not this one obviously) we will be in the running to win it so it keeps the fans interest up

    – getting to away games is relatively simple compared to larger countries

    – we all know fans of the other clubs in the league through work, friends etc so the fan banter is there when we play each other

negative points about playing in the scottish league

    – it is run by huns

    – it is run for huns
