The truth about St Johnstone and Inverness

880

St Johnstone have been a managerial proving ground in recent seasons.  Owen Coyle did a great deal of good work without achieving promotion to the SPL, but his two years there managed to sufficiently impress Burnley that they tempted him south.  The people of Burnley were probably as surprised as the rest of us when Own led them to the FA Premier League but five months into the season he jumped ship to Bolton Wanderers.

Coyle kept Bolton up in 2010 and again in 2011 but they slipped from the league last summer.  Poor form in the Championship soon turned sentiment against the manger and he was relieved of his duties in October.

Derek McInnes followed Coyle at St Johnstone and brought them into the SPL in his first full season but 15 months ago, after being touted for several jobs in England, he left for Bristol City, who, bottom of the Championship, sacked him today.

Steve Lomas is St Johnstone’s current manager and the latest to impress clubs south of the border offering larger pay-packets.  He would be foolish to accept a job from a struggling club who have sacked their manager mid-season.  As we have said several times before, managers receive a great deal of credit or blame but the success of a football club is infinitely more dependent on the entire structure of the club.

St Johnstone’s structure is just fine.  The same is true of Inverness, where Terry Butcher decided to stay this week, as well as Ross County and Motherwell.  The city clubs, Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, Dundee United and Dundee all churn through seasons as compulsive underachievers.  If they were able to do something about this fact our league would be the envy of most.

Probably raffle is the fair way to go and I’m happy with that. Will it not have to have the blessing of Paul67, and how does the whole thing get off the ground? No rush on this, it’s here and not going anywhere. :) When are you back over?

  2. Celt55,

you’ll see a version of it on celtic wiki if you put in 1965 final etc.

Talking of old games does any (ahem) mature bhoys out there recall us beating orcs 3 times in the space of a couple of weeks around the 71-72 season.

I’m sure one of these games was moved from Parkhead to Ipox (a league cup game of two)

because the Parkhead stand had been on fire?

    UC,

I said earlier it looks like they are trying to implement a Scottish balance strategy

  4. You are totally correct danso. What we have had for past few weeks is Loyalist Bullies trying to overturn a Democratic Decision by outright intimidation. Obviously it would not be right to let the Bullies win. However call it sectarian strife with both sides as bad as each other and twill make it easier to announce a “COMPROMISE” solution. Sinn Fein won’t back down but Alliance hold the Balance of Power, I can see a compromise motion in the offing. If it happens it will be a disaster for the Peace Process.

Thats not the story here .. But then again its reported as a peaceful protest here …

Watching the news … Cops being attacked by mob … No attempt by cops to arrest them .

  6. Propaganda?

I live in north Belfast, haven’t encountered a roadblock and haven’t seen any signs of violence other than the news. The girl reporting for sky got it spot on, this isn,t trouble throughout the north but trouble in a few streets…

the figure quoted came from me but in my defence it was a quote from a facebook page. I didnt think there were asmany of them arrested. will not matter there will still be as many Cy the end of the whole sorry affair

do not post much, but just catching up with the experiences on the Seville run. I went to the Boavista game in Porto, and a Portuguese friend of mine, who is a friend of the Benfica doctor managed to get me and two fellow Swindon Tims tickets. When we got into the ground we were in a stading area behind the dug outs which was very sparsely populated. Very strange as there were hundreds if not thousands of fans outside without tickets. After the final whistle, the plastic tunnel was wheeled out to the pitchside and I climbed onto the glass barrier which was about 8 foot high shouting out to the players as they went in. Saint Martin was going in and I shouted ‘Martin, Martin’ and he disappeared into the tunnel and then seconds later his head popped back out and looked at me. He came over and raised his arm and we shook hands and he said ‘thanks for coming, thanks for coming we really appreciate it’.

Now, I am sure some of you have been in the situation where you have met your hero or had cause to say something to him/her. Well I admit now, I was slightly dumbstruck and all I could say was ‘we love you Martin’. We love you Martin, for chrissakes. I still have flashbacks where I could have said something more fitting and unique like, ‘Martin, you’re immortal now’. Ah well.

Still indelibly marked on my brain is Bobo’s reaction to the final whistle as he was right in front of me. The guy was truly immense ( Copyright MON) on the run.

There are similarities in the way they are desperate to get “timmy” involved,

For the same purpose as far as I can see.

  11. Demographics suggest that nationalists will be in the majority by the time the next local authority elections come about in 2014. The flag will come down for good then, the unionists should stop their bleating and enjoy the next few years cause the only flag they are likely to see fly from the city hall in future will be the Irish tricolour….

I remember going into Hampden just as the 69′ cup final had kicked off,pie and can in hand,..up into the terracing and peering over the heads of fellow supporters ( i was still a wee bhoy then) just in time to see Big Billy’s header nestle in the right hand corner of the Orc’s net,…pie and can up in the air..crowd going berserk,

3-0 up by half time an orc’s streaming for the exits shortly into the second half to the tune of ,go home ya…etc.

  15. dena29. Sinn Fein wanted the Flag removed completely it was Alliance who came up with first compromise to fly it for 15 days. Neither of us will be proved right or wrong tonight, so lets just wait & see.

  16. One of my favourite moments on the road to Seville

was down at Anfield when big John H

picked up the ball deep in the Liverpool half

and unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot .

  18. they are tolerated because they are the same mob who who vote their politicians in to comfortable occupations, these same so called politicians will not empower the cops to deal seriously with them for obvious reasons, then they need to bring others in to this so as they can blame it on them aswell mentality,

then later this becomes the nationalists fault and an only to

willing british media willing to spout this version as it suits

they agenda, well its not a them aswell situation it is a clear

act of protestant extremists not accepting a democratic decision

and thats the real truth the rest is complete propaganda lies

  20. Guys, ever so slightly off topic but … Last night I watched the 1st ever Sopranos episode, tonight it was Breaking Bad.

    What should I stick with?

  21. Regan on Green.

“What can I say about Charles?” On a one-

    to-one level their relationship is

    described as professional. “If you

look at what Charles has managed

    to achieve, from where Rangers

were and from him hiding out in

hotels in Glasgow and being afraid,

to where he is now, I think he’s

    done a remarkable job, quite

    honestly.

“He’s recognised that the way to

get success is to play to a group of

    supporters that now idolise him.

He’s actually worked out the secret

of getting his fans on his side and

that’s to be very outspoken, to be

    very challenging to the authorities,

to be seen to be standing up for

    Rangers when nobody else would

stand up for them and he’s turned

the club around. Charles is not a

big fan of the SFA and that’s

    probably because his fans aren’t.

    But, privately, sitting across a

    table, we get on fine.

“He’s an outspoken guy. He calls a

spade a shovel and he’s not afraid

to put his views across. Equally,

I’ve had to defend the SFA on a

number of issues over the last few

    months. We’ve disagreed on

things. The SFA can’t be seen to be

dealing with Rangers in one way

and other members in another way

and that frustrates Charles at times

simply because of the profile of

    Rangers. Certain issues have

    caused differences of opinion.

    We’ve begged to differ.”

    No prima donna in Hollywood’s

    history has been capable of

throwing a hissy fit quite like

Green, one of several last week

    being this notion that Rangers

should get up and leave Scottish

    football if the leagues are

    reconstructed on the 12-12-18

model, as looks likely. Nothing that

Green does or says surprises Regan

    any more.

“Charles has made his point but I

would ask the question as to why

there is a desire to leave, having

spent so much time trying to get

back in the first place? Look at the

facts. Rangers will arrive at the top

of Scottish football in exactly the

same time period as they would do

if the leagues stay as they are now.

Really, there is no huge difference,

so you’ve got to ask what is it that

he’s concerned about. Why say it

when he knows full well that he’s

got nowhere to go and in order to

leave he needs the approval of the

SFA, and the board would not be

minded to allow one of the biggest

clubs upping sticks and leaving at

the drop of a hat. It would also

need the approval of UEFA and it

would also need another league to

say ‘yes, come on in’, and in recent

months and years there have been

    very clear responses from the

    Premier League and the Football

League in England. I’m not sure it’s

anything other than just making a

    statement for impact.”

ballymurphy, and i agree its only certain areas that are effected, but the short strand is and always has been attacked

because its a very small area [but tough] and is surrounded by the same bullies hence why they attack it because they like all bullies are really cowards.

  24. corkcelt agree nothing will be decided tonight

but interesting that you say Sf wanted the flag removed completely ,

    so they comprimised.

and not a very “inclusive” suggestion to begin with.

  25. Danso
