Then there were two: Rod Petrie steps forward

1098

Hibernian chairman, Rob Petrie, yesterday told BBC Radio Scotland “Integrity is beyond purchase”.  It’s incredible to think that we live in times where this is actually news.

It’s hard to imagine how anyone would go about arguing with Rod on this matter.  Kilmarnock chairman, Michael Johnston’s recent comment, “The [SPL] clubs are mindful of a sporting integrity aspect but the commercial benefits may outweigh that” offers the alternative view, but the logical conclusion of Petrie’s argument is stark.  If integrity of top clubs can be purchased, what about officials, referees and players with bookmaker friends?

We can assume Hibernian will join Celtic in voting against admitting a Newco directly into the SPL, should such a vote occur.  Five clubs in total are required to block such a proposal.  With Petrie declared against, would Romanov at Hearts vote for Newco?  His previous public pronouncements suggest he would relish the opportunity to take on one of the big Glasgow clubs.

Dundee United and Aberdeen are two other clubs under significant supporter pressure.  Both teams are also keen to change the 11-1 voting rule, which would be possible without a Newco.

Rangers, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone (through manager Steve Lomas) have all declared in favour of admitting a Newco, I expect Motherwell and St Mirren will do the same.  Ross County and Inverness may fancy adding Dundee into next season’s relegation fight instead of Newco but there has been no indication how either club would vote.

The 7th May vote was the best chance of getting Newco provisions voted through.  The more time clubs have to consider the decision the more susceptible they will be to supporter lobby.

I am of the view that SPL chief, Neil Doncaster, will not allow himself to become aware if Rangers have a prima facie case to answer as a result of the SPL inquiry into contractual arrangements until after a vote is taken.  Deadline for clubs to respond to the inquiry passed over five weeks ago. A simple check of submissions against SPL records is all that is required. Even if each clubs issued an all-clear, the inquiry should have reported.

Doncaster perhaps has no idea of the flood that will come his way soon and wash away all of these questions. His opportunity to act before events overtake him is limited.

  7. Rod Petrie has not only stated his position clearly, he has put pressure on every other club to either admit money is king, and they have no sporting integrity, or, as he says, they will side with the arguement that you cannot put a price on sporting integrity.

This is the battle for the future of Scottish football and battle lines are being drawn.

The flat atmosphere that characterised the match between Celtic and St Johnstone on Thursday, and Rangers’ goalless draw with Motherwell in their final home game of the season on Saturday indicates what could be expected if the championship becomes a one-horse race, with the campaign effectively decided in February or even earlier.

The desire – even, the need – to ensure sporting integrity is, to a degree yet to be determined, in conflict with commercial realities for clubs who exist on fine margins.

Even if Rangers’ finances had been unimpeachable over the past decade or so, the imbalance in power between the Old Firm pair and the rest would still prompt accusations of unfairness from clubs without the advantage of the Glasgow pair’s huge fan bases and economic clout.

Now that Rangers have overreached themselves, the tension between the desire to bring them down several pegs and the need to maintain the league as an attractive environment – for fans, sponsors and broadcasters alike – is palpable. Stephen Thompson, the Dundee United chairman, his St Johnstone counterpart Steven Brown and Motherwell vice-chairman Derek Weir were concerned about the possibility of a backlash that could lead to their clubs being boycotted by Rangers fans if the five-man SPL board – of which they are members – choose to reject a newco Ibrox club.

The trio would rather take a poll of all 12 members and make a decision that reflects the majority feeling. It has been reported that the SPL cannot attach conditions to a newco and that Rangers could effectively escape punishment by going down that route, but The Daily Telegraph can reveal that there is an alternative.

We should not be surprised that Hibernian FC will vote against a newco.

Next to Celtic,I would suggest that they have suffered the most,by Rankers devious ways.

Where would Hibernian FC be today if they were not pillage by the greed of Rankers and the need of Celtic to try and compete with this cheating monster.

Where would Hibernian FC be today with the following players,Thompson,Whittaker,Murray,Brown,Riordan,Caldwell ,then selling others like Fletcher and Sproule.

I would suggest that Hibernian FC on a level playing field would have been a force in Scottish football.

If anyone is phoning the radio shows ,tell them where we would be without Rankers. We don’t need any stinking buns.

re. Matthews. I think he’s a good player, but RB has been an issue for a while now. He rarely tries to get to the by-line and put a cross in – this may be because he’s been instructed not to risk it (noticed Izaguirre post-injury has been similarly cautious). The 3-5-2 Lennon employs is veru different to O’Neill’s – the wide men don’t get to the by-line, and we are heavily reliant on the creative midfielder (Commons) to set up chances.

    Published on Sunday 1 April 2012 00:00

STEVE Brown, the St Johnstone chairman, has warned that if Rangers go into liquidation and are not permitted to re-enter the SPL as a new company, several top-flight clubs would go out of business.

One of the six members of the SPL board whose job it would be to consider an application by the “new” Rangers, Brown stressed that he had yet to make up his mind as to what would be the most appropriate course of action.

He said that he hoped never to be faced with the decision but, if he was, he would have to weigh sporting integrity against the cost to clubs such as his own. Refusing to grant the Glasgow club an SPL licence would, in his view, lead to a financial “disaster”.

Asked if he meant that some clubs would go to the wall, Brown replied: “I think they would. I think a lot of them are kidding themselves on. One or two of them are on the brink as it is. If they’re on the brink as it is, and they’re getting support financially from Rangers and Sky, there can only be one thing [that would happen].”

In an exclusive interview with Scotland on Sunday, Brown also called for a more conciliatory approach by the SPL’s non-Old Firm clubs to the current row over voting rights. Some have said that they would consider resigning from the top flight in protest.

He says that only the best-run clubs would survive in a league without the Old Firm. “Would you get by without the Old Firm? We [at St Johnstone] would get by. We’ve demonstrated that because we’ve been in the First Division for seven years, but you certainly wouldn’t have the same calibre of player at your club. Could the other teams get by without the Old Firm? I think three or four of them would go out of business. Careful what you wish for.”

Brown says that, if a newco Rangers were to be excluded from the SPL, the economic impact would outweigh any other benefits. “You probably would get more supporters because your team would be likely to be more competitive, but in financial terms, it would be a disaster, an absolute disaster.

“In financial terms, I can’t see how [the other clubs] could possibly fill the gap. The revenue they [Rangers] bring with them equates to probably three or four games against teams from the bottom six. It’s a huge void, both in gate revenue and TV money because it is my understanding that the Sky contract would fall through.”

  28. Donkey thrower is waiting on the BTC hitting and wiping out RFCia before putting himself in the firing line, by then it will be all the Oldco’s fault and Newco unblemished.

It’s a disgrace. When do we see the results of the BTC? come on Hector get the skates on!

RIP Tommy, Bobby and my wee Da.

  29. IMO Petrie has handled the financial affairs at Hibernian very well indeed. A few years back they did carry too much debt but have reigned it back (players sales helped this – but at least they didn’t just take the money in, not pay their debts and tx etc and spend it elsewhere like Rfc did!!)

They have decent stadium although it seems the product on the park is below the expectations of their supporters.

Glad he has spoken out in this manner.

Hope they upset the odds and beat Hertz in the Cup Final

If it becomes clear that the entry of NewClub is likely to be blocked I expect most Chairmen will want to be seen to be voting for integrity – could be 3-9
