This is THE Celtic story of 2016

“Dear Friends
“Celtic FC Foundation’s Annual Christmas Appeal reflects the very heart of the Club’s charitable and humble beginnings. It proudly follows in the footsteps of Brother Walfrid, providing comfort to those who need it most.”

So starts the letter from Celtic FC Foundation Head of Fundraising, Jane Maguire, as she confirmed this year’s Christmas appeal raised an incredible £220,000.

What are the consequences of this?

373 families in Glasgow, Coatbridge, Bellshill and Girvan, facing poverty and hardship, received significant help.

50 pensioners in the north and east of the city received a Christmas voucher, while kids in the same area received gifts through PEEK (Possibilities for Each and Every Kid).

130 clients of The Simon Community were given a Christmas lunch.

Children living with long-term health conditions at the Glasgow Children’s Hospital received what on some occasions will be their most significant Christmas gift.

Glasgow East Women’s Aid received a Christmas meal and gifts for families at the refuge.

Vulnerable refugees received support through the Scottish Refugee Council.

Glasgow City Mission’s Foodbank received support; they work with an average of 60 households per week.

Loaves & Fishes and Spirit Aid received Christmas hampers and toys for their work with homeless families.

The Wayside Club, Glasgow’s 365 day venue for the homeless received help in providing hot food for the very needy.

The Foundation and Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing (more on them later) split the cost of a £10,800 van to allow The Invisibles to carry out their important work.

Parkhead Salvation Army’s work was supported again this year.

St Roch’s Foundation’s meals for the homeless and pensioners between Christmas and New Year will be supported.

Glasgow Night Shelter, who provide food and a safe place for homeless refugees, some of societies more marginalised, were helped.

The Elpis Centre’s work for vulnerable young women was aided.

400 kids received a Christmas Party at Celtic Park.

Oban’s Hope Kitchen’s work to provide food and shelter has been funded.

The People’s Kitchen, Newcastle, who aid the homeless and vulnerable was helped – recognition, perhaps, of the incredible work the Tyneside No.1 Celtic Supporters Club do for the Foundation.

Children in Poverty Inverclyde received clothing, books and toys, as well as a trip to Santa’s Grotto, in consultation with another great club, the Greenock CSC.

Grampian Women’s Aid, Moray Firth Radio’s Cash for Kids, St John the Evangelist’s work (Cumnock), North Ayrshire Women’s Aid, Fife Gingerbread, the Eric Liddle Centre (Edinburgh) were all helped in their work.

Women’s Aid in Dublin, Belfast and Lisburn were each aided.

The Foundation are funding the Northern Ireland Hospice’ Teenage Weekends project for 2017.

Kids at the school in Whitechapel, London, where Bro Walfrid taught, were taken to a pantomime.
London and the South East’s needy were helped through various projects:
Cardinal Hume Centre
Neighbours of Poplar
Hillingdon Cherubs (neonatal work)
Readi-Bank Foodbank
Camden New Journal Appeal
Wimbledon Children’s Hospital – in connection with the Wimbledon CSC
The Brett Foundation
London North West Healthcare Charitable Fund
Our Barn (life skills, aged 16-25)
RNLI Ramsgate
Pilgrims Hospice
SVP Society Broadstairs

Kent Air Ambulance
Kent Foster Care Association
Happy Days Children’s Charity
Big Issue Foundation

The Foundation were asked to pass on gifts received, some of which went to Sean’s Trust – setup by our friend Linda Croker, who lost her husband and CQN’er St John Doyle, three years ago.

What did you do to achieve this?

Founding Fathers’ Fast, raised £1500 on one day.
Celtic Sleep Out – and incredible £80k.
Ghirls for Good, £22k

Bucket Collection, £13k

And nearly half the total was raised by direct donations – like the kind of things we do here throughout the year.

There is a part of this story which is seldom told.  People from the Foundation turned up at the door of some of these families this month with envelopes containing cash.  The reaction was often beyond gratitude or relief.  Many tears of joy are shed as feelings of helplessness find an anchor to cling to.

If you are cold and find warmth, hungry and are fed.  If you cannot provide for your children then receive shelter, toys and hope, you know the value of that £220,000.

This is THE Celtic story of 2016.

    Condolences to Doc and Paddybhoy1888.

WRT the charity work – my wife was visiting a family she works with. They had to leave their native country on grounds of safety. They do not speak any English. The cheque they received from something called Celtic has completely flabbergasted them. Their two young children will benefit the most. Well done the Foundation.

  3. As a young apprentice in the winter of ’64 I loved Glad All Over although my carolinas hated it and the DC5 as they knocked the Fab Four off the top of the charts, I loved Mike Smith’s rasping voice and DC was no mean drummer either even though he looked a wee bit effeminate.

Roll forward 2 ½ year later and it’s the summer of ’66, by this time I’m a Beach Boys fan and cruising around the Bonnie Banks in my Lambretta with among tunes Sloop John B echoing in my heid.

Now here we are 50 year later and those inbreds have bastardised versions of both songs. I hope they’re all in “Bits and Pieces as we bring in the New Year on top of the league singing “Catch Us If You Can”. Hmmm “I Like it Like That”.

  4. A great effort on the part of all those that contribute to making the Foundation what it is – a diverse organisation for good within the community.

Disappointing to read some begrudging personnel (and frequently snyde) agenda comments on today’s article.

I’m sure the beneficiaries of the charitable works will be more than grateful for the kindness or help afforded them. I doubt their first thoughts will be about the donator’s; status, wealth, politics, creed, colour or religion.

For some it might mean; a warm meal, shelter, a child’s toy or an opportunity to drag themselves out of the depths of their despair – who knows?

A Happy Christmas (something a lot of us take for granted) to the Recipients of the CFC Foundation’s good works!

The Gang of Four got to about the 18 yard line with res12,

    ========================

I think we did more than that. We got into the penalty box and think we won a penalty and are waiting for The Board to confirm, then take it.

Perhaps we thought wrong but are waiting for to hear if there is a penalty when that should have came at the last AGM.

On not being on the same song sheet at times, you have no idea, but although getting there was often the subject of debate, the goal of SFA answering for 2011, and so being accountable just by answering, no matter if the answer was Res12 was indeed unnecessary, was never lost.

The towel has not been thrown in, it has been handed back all fluffed up with new questions one of which suggests fraud but needs the club to dismiss, for the club to handle. The issue always belonged there and the mistake was not voting Res 12 through.

All it asked was for UEFA to investigate.

    Auldheid,

What I cant figure out from his posts is are you supposed to be Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, or Wang Hongwen? Or does it matter which one is which? Any of you 4 got a decent singing voice? if so, that one could be Qing, I guess.

Unless of course, he thinks you remind him of that old English punk rock back …. but that wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense …

I can indeed support your claim on how you’ve personally challenged Celtic on a number of occasions.

The news today about the Foundation’s fundraising success is a wonderful story and for the life of me I can’t understand why anyone would wish to make it anything else.

I hope you’re keeping well sir.

  16. Interesting article about Darlington FC on the beeb site, this was a club only 10 year younger than deidco and 4 older than us. More than a few similarities with deidco/sevco.

Darlington 1883 were set-up following 2012’s dissolution of the old club, which ended 129 years of history.

Relegation from the Football League in 2010 was one catalyst for the problems, but it was the 25,000-capacity stadium built by former owner George Reynolds – once heralded as the start of a bright future – that eventually brought the club down.

    • They moved into the stadium in 2003, but less than 12 months later entered administration with debts of £20m generated by the move.

    • George Houghton placed Darlington in administration again in 2009, a move that eventually cost the club a place in the League Two play-offs.

    • The stadium ownership passed to the old club’s major creditors in 2011, the loss of one of their biggest assets.

    • By 2012, the club was put into administration for a third time, having already seen players leave under breach of contract terms.

    • The holding company was wound up in 2012; a new one created in DFC 1883 Limited, with the club relegated four divisions and forced to change their name to Darlington 1883.

  17. A great effort from every one involved in the foundation/ supporters and Celtic.

  19. Dear CQN,

I thank all for for your kind thoughts today.

As Cowiebhoy said he knew my Dad well, Auld Doc saved his hide more than once.

When I mentioned to my Dad last night CowieBhoy had been asking for him he simply muttered “roaster!”

    :-)

    Thanks Norrie that was appreciated.

And Auld Doc was pleased to hear you were lighting a candle for him.

I’ve had a day of straightening out his affairs etc.

Settling down now to welcome family and friends and celebrate a life well lived.

    Hail Hail Dad.

PaddyBhoy1888, condolences my friend, that is tragic.

    Thoughts with you and yours.
