This is THE Celtic story of 2016

“Dear Friends
“Celtic FC Foundation’s Annual Christmas Appeal reflects the very heart of the Club’s charitable and humble beginnings. It proudly follows in the footsteps of Brother Walfrid, providing comfort to those who need it most.”

So starts the letter from Celtic FC Foundation Head of Fundraising, Jane Maguire, as she confirmed this year’s Christmas appeal raised an incredible £220,000.

What are the consequences of this?

373 families in Glasgow, Coatbridge, Bellshill and Girvan, facing poverty and hardship, received significant help.

50 pensioners in the north and east of the city received a Christmas voucher, while kids in the same area received gifts through PEEK (Possibilities for Each and Every Kid).

130 clients of The Simon Community were given a Christmas lunch.

Children living with long-term health conditions at the Glasgow Children’s Hospital received what on some occasions will be their most significant Christmas gift.

Glasgow East Women’s Aid received a Christmas meal and gifts for families at the refuge.

Vulnerable refugees received support through the Scottish Refugee Council.

Glasgow City Mission’s Foodbank received support; they work with an average of 60 households per week.

Loaves & Fishes and Spirit Aid received Christmas hampers and toys for their work with homeless families.

The Wayside Club, Glasgow’s 365 day venue for the homeless received help in providing hot food for the very needy.

The Foundation and Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing (more on them later) split the cost of a £10,800 van to allow The Invisibles to carry out their important work.

Parkhead Salvation Army’s work was supported again this year.

St Roch’s Foundation’s meals for the homeless and pensioners between Christmas and New Year will be supported.

Glasgow Night Shelter, who provide food and a safe place for homeless refugees, some of societies more marginalised, were helped.

The Elpis Centre’s work for vulnerable young women was aided.

400 kids received a Christmas Party at Celtic Park.

Oban’s Hope Kitchen’s work to provide food and shelter has been funded.

The People’s Kitchen, Newcastle, who aid the homeless and vulnerable was helped – recognition, perhaps, of the incredible work the Tyneside No.1 Celtic Supporters Club do for the Foundation.

Children in Poverty Inverclyde received clothing, books and toys, as well as a trip to Santa’s Grotto, in consultation with another great club, the Greenock CSC.

Grampian Women’s Aid, Moray Firth Radio’s Cash for Kids, St John the Evangelist’s work (Cumnock), North Ayrshire Women’s Aid, Fife Gingerbread, the Eric Liddle Centre (Edinburgh) were all helped in their work.

Women’s Aid in Dublin, Belfast and Lisburn were each aided.

The Foundation are funding the Northern Ireland Hospice’ Teenage Weekends project for 2017.

Kids at the school in Whitechapel, London, where Bro Walfrid taught, were taken to a pantomime.
London and the South East’s needy were helped through various projects:
Cardinal Hume Centre
Neighbours of Poplar
Hillingdon Cherubs (neonatal work)
Readi-Bank Foodbank
Camden New Journal Appeal
Wimbledon Children’s Hospital – in connection with the Wimbledon CSC
The Brett Foundation
London North West Healthcare Charitable Fund
Our Barn (life skills, aged 16-25)
RNLI Ramsgate
Pilgrims Hospice
SVP Society Broadstairs

Kent Air Ambulance
Kent Foster Care Association
Happy Days Children’s Charity
Big Issue Foundation

The Foundation were asked to pass on gifts received, some of which went to Sean’s Trust – setup by our friend Linda Croker, who lost her husband and CQN’er St John Doyle, three years ago.

What did you do to achieve this?

Founding Fathers’ Fast, raised £1500 on one day.
Celtic Sleep Out – and incredible £80k.
Ghirls for Good, £22k

Bucket Collection, £13k

And nearly half the total was raised by direct donations – like the kind of things we do here throughout the year.

There is a part of this story which is seldom told.  People from the Foundation turned up at the door of some of these families this month with envelopes containing cash.  The reaction was often beyond gratitude or relief.  Many tears of joy are shed as feelings of helplessness find an anchor to cling to.

If you are cold and find warmth, hungry and are fed.  If you cannot provide for your children then receive shelter, toys and hope, you know the value of that £220,000.

This is THE Celtic story of 2016.

Aye, we’re clear; as THETMREAPER says, your views on the Board and Res12 have clouded your judgement.

IMHO, for those of us who aren’t suffering from myopia raising over £220K for charity in 2 months is the story that distinguishes this from any other year!

  2. A very welcome leader.

Capped doffed to all who work for\with the foundation, give their time to raise money and all who have donated. Fantastic effort from all. I even applaud the club for creating the engine that affords fans a vehicle with which they can donate to help those less fortunate in all walks of life.

It would be magical if the donations were matched by the club but hey we can’t have it all. That is not an attack on the club from me but just a wish that more people could be helped.

No negative post from me on the club until a new leader is posted.

COYBIG to all fundraisers and those who have donated.

I’m so sorry to hear your sad news. May perpetual light shine upon yer da.

My thoughts and prayers are also with Paddybhoy who buried his sister earlier today.

  4. Cowiebhoy,

“Big Doc” was the light of the Bannockburn CSC for many a year. I went on the bus from 1982 to 1991 before I now long forgotten fit of youth saw me leave. A respected big chap, with always a smile and a good word to say.

He was a big part of my Celtic youth and my thoughts are with his family.

My father was also a founding member of the bus, though he argues it was 1975…..

    RIP Big Doc.

No my judgement is clear too.

I can’t come on here and while extolling the virtues of the magnificent Celtic supporters charity state that in my opinion the main story of 2016 is res12?

Sounds like SMSM hunnery to me.

  6. Condolences Doc on the passing of Auld Doc.

Condolences to Paddybhoy on the loss of your sister.

  7. Ghuys, what a fantastic effort by the support and the foundation.

Let’s not let our other grievances downsize the scale of this effort.

    Magnificent .

On res.12 I still live in hope.

Like some, I have reservations about Paul’s lead. However, given the holiday season, and the loss suffered by two posters, today doesn’t seem like the right time for that. ( If the could arrange a truce in 1914, surely we can manage it for a few days on CQN).

So, instead, I will simply wish holiday greetings (Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, or whatever faith you follow) to one and all.

And I would like to express my condolences to Doc and Paddybhoy. Tough to lose a loved one anyone, but I would think even harder at this time of year. So, special thoughts and prayers for both of you.

Condolences with Doc and Paddybhoy1888 on their respective losses, thoughts and prayer with you and loved ones in this time of sadness.

  11. Not been on for a while but I must congratulate all those whose efforts made the monies raised for such good causes, take a bow. Fantastic.

May I wish everyone on Planet Celtic a very peaceful, happy Christmas and here’s hoping that 2017 brings good health and happiness..

  12. The Gang of Four got to about the 18 yard line with res12, they got one off the bar with UEFA saying thems are not the same club ( not that we didn’t know that) but fair play to them they gave it they’r best shot, but didn’t get what they where after, and now that’s the CFC boards fault? That’s the bit a don’t get, now they’r talking about fraud, Celtic obviously do not think the charge of fraud is water tight enough for the board to go down that road, as that could lead to one hellava law suit against our club, and the CFC being in full charge of running our club look like they have said wooooo.

At the beginning of the week there seemed to be mixed messages from the Gang of Four, one that there would be further talks, and two that it’s over and that the charges of fraud have been given to the proper authorities to investigate fraudulent activities by the SFA , that’s the way I read it, but! Willing to be put right if Iv picked it up wrong.

Once again I could be wrong, but to me the Gang of Four are not all on the same hymn sheet (and not for the first time IMO) now it seems that everything bad that comes out of the talks about res 12 lays in the hands of the CFC board, and the Gang of Four are blameless and above approach on any matters regarding res 12, personally I find that very hard to believe, in fact I don’t believe it if the truth be known, so like the backers of the Gang of Four have they’r opinion, I Tony Donnelly have mine.

I’m just doing what I normally don’t when CFC get attacked, I back them to the hilt, I’m not calling names like, snakes, tories, Hun board, and many many other silly posts by the drama queens who ever they are (no personal insults) they are entitled to they’r opinion as I am, but as other posters are telling you the majority of the Celtic supporters are not interested, and the Gang of Four seem to have thrown the towel in too, but a must say, they gave them a run for there money, but bloody noses where needed, and the rest of Scotland didn’t care either, shame actually.

  13. Well Done The Foundation…

I hate the hypocrisy of Christmas and the ‘1 day Good Deed’ purchase of some grace by many who use the occasion to buy some Charitable status.

But the Foundation don’t do Charitable work at Christmas.. they don’t hand out once a year parcels and gifts, nor do they do seasonal work for the needy, disadvantaged, helpless, those in crisis and the nameless faceless people who don’t ask, but receive assistance… they just do Charitable Work.

24/7, 365 a year.. no questions asked, no reasons needed, no opinions formed.

God Bless everyone who supported our Foundation this and in years past.. Bother Walfrid is smiling on us all.

Happy Christmas to Jane and Donna Marie and Brian who helped me with my wee project this year.. You have no idea what it achieved!!!

God, I’m proud to be a Celtic Supporter.

Happy Christmas to all our Celtic Family.

  14. Well done to the foundation and all who donated throughout the year- and to CFC for their support in achieving a magnificent sum.

  15. I am in the Xmas Market in George Square, it’s pissing down, cold and bleak. The good news is the Glasgow punters are drinking and spending money. We are so lucky to live amongst so many generous people.

  16. Oh dear, very sad to see some of the remarks on here about the Board when so many of us were concentrating on the enormous effort of the supporter in raising £220.000 to aid those in need. There is a time and place for everything.

In case those who will have a go at me for saying that can I just add that when I have a problem with the Board then I let them know about it. Only this week I wrote to PL about the disgraceful way I was treated by one of the new stewards at the end of last Saturday’s game. I received an immediate reply. Likewise I have had a session with PL on the Res 12 and other things that disturb me about the Board.

When I have something to question about the Board’s actions I write to PL for an explanation I just don’t go on about it on CQN.

HT knows that I have had my say about OBAct even to arranging a meeting with a Minister at Holyrood. So I do take exception to situations where we are being hurt by others. But surely we can celebrate the goodness of so many supporters without adding remarks about the Board. Leave that for another day.

I think on wonderful news days like today THE murderators should delete posts with the very naughty f word in them

  18. I see Pardew has been sacked – I am sure his severance pay will keep him out of the foodbanks for a few weeks

  19. Just read about the sad news in the lives of Paddybhoy and Doc.I will pray for your loved ones today and at Mass tomorrow. RIP.

The way you have gone about gaining insight into anything about which with you have a concern shows that an answer to the issue itself is your objective. Complaining on a Blog might simply be letting off a bit of steam. Complaining ALL the time on a Blog might be a sign of some other problem.

I prefer your approach. Well done.
