Thistle, EU ruling, Belfast cyclists

127

We put an inordinate amount of goals past Partick Thistle in the League Cup in October, but Thistle responded well to that reversal, losing only once (by a single goal to Aberdeen) since.  They are a better team than John Guidetti made them look.

As for Celtic, this is another opportunity to build on good recent performances.  The speed and accuracy we passed against both Salzburg (despite the result) and Hearts was perceivably better than in previous games, but there is still work to do.  Salzburg were better, Hearts imploded, but Thistle will defend deep and made life difficult.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the ticket competition yesterday, and who donated £1 or more to the Mary’s Meals school kitchen appeal.  Thanks also to Magners for making it possible.

Congratulations to the Youths who won 1-6 at Murray Park last night.  No doubt about it, that’s going to hurt.

Thanks to the reader who emailed a copy of the European Commission ruling from June 2002 on multiple ownership of football clubs.  Then owners of shares in (then) Rangers, ENIC, took Uefa to the EC Competition Commissioner, Mario Monti (whatever happened to him?), ruled that the Uefa prohibition on multiple ownership was legal and necessary to avoid clubs being “tempted to rig matches”, and to “ensure that sporting competitions are fair and honest”.

Anyone wanting to clip Mike Ashley’s wings could do worse than involve Uefa sooner.

the family section at Celtic park is next to the away support, so far this year my daughter and nephews have been subjected to some abuse from away fans, children watch tv, listen to musi and read books, I don’t swear in front of her but she is out in a big bad world where big bad wolves are swearing and spitting, dreadful so it is….

The worst behaviour i have experienced in recent years at Celtic park came from the suits who had een fed and watered in the no7 restaurant. Drunk and foul mouthed being an unerstatement. ..

That being said we must rid our fans of the ned element the like of which my dad experienced last boxing day at mcdermid park.those clowns won’t do that again..

  7. If there was vandalism by our supporters then our Club should pay for it and make a public announcement to the support detailing what it cost. I agree with an earlier post which suggested that a Celtic Club Official should check our area in visiting grounds pre match. If there are any damaged areas he should photograph them. After the game a post match inspection should take place and if necessary a second set of photographs should be taken.

I can understand how seats might be damaged by over enthusiastic celebrating but if there is an element of blootered vandals attaching itself to the main stream support, they need to be rooted out and got rid of.

  8. It is ironic that the comments have come from Hearts, which history shows is the angriest current club in Scotland. Though they may face stiff opposition if that new clubs keeps up its form.

Football grounds are the invisibility cloak that folk also don when they get behind the wheel. It’s as though the safety in numbers make it ok for folk to damage property and shout vile abuse.

Aye let’s look at what the other lot did last week, this is lies, it’s been over stated… None of that is of any use whatsoever if folk did damage seats.

I went to a game with my 7 year old a Celtic Park recently and had to sit in front of two nethandrials who found it necessary to swear every second word and direct abuse a our players.

I remember being taken to games around the same age and regularly folk doing the same would have been chastened by the majority. Not so now where folk are frightened to incur these folks wrath or charges being pressed should the matter become physical.

The toilets at Celtic Park are frequently graffitied, around a dozen smoke in them and there is no regard for other human beings, particularly kids.

  11. Roseburn stands a sh**hole, bogs are minging as are the wee dumfries mob in the woodworm infested “MAIN STAND”.

Oh and by the way they charge ye 30 bucks a ticket!.

  12. bournesouprecipe on

It’s not the statement that’s problematic, it’s the platform and reportage it’s given.

I’m sure Celtic could have given an account similar for visiting fans Aberdeen for example.

Maybe we have and it just wasn’t news, just like Ann Budge.

  13. I wasn’t at Tynecastle last Sunday but I have no reason to doubt the veracity of Budges statement

This is nothing new, unfortunately there are elements among the Celtic away support who for the sole purpose of attending an away match is a day out with their pals to overly indulge in the bevvy and the cocaine and get on with their own agenda no matter who they inconvenience and the repercussions The match itself is normally secondary to their enjoyment of the day and that is if they even have a ticket

Having been at Tynecastle last season I have first hand experience of the total selfishness of of those whose only intention it is to get coked and bevvied out of their head and have no qualms about those whose enjoyment of the game they spoil

  14. Regarding the alleged hooliganism at Tynecastle, perhaps we should let it be known to all away fans that Celtic stewards will attend matches ‘plain clothes’ and any instances of vandalism or sectarian behaviour will be recorded and forwarded to both Celtic and the authorities.

This may deter some if not all the idiots if they think they might be caught and banned/ charged for their stupid behaviour.

As for Ms Budge, I think this statement shows her naïveté if she thinks that making this issue public will solve anything. If anything it may just make if worse. I also believe that she may also have exaggerated the matter for whatever reason and she should ask the Celtic board about the costs involved in running a football club regarding away fans who attend matches.

  15. Well, I hope when her team next visit Celtic Park, Heart’s owner is equally outspoken. Mind you, I expect for every one of their supporters lifted , 5 of ours will be too. After all, wasn’t that our Hearts supporting former First Minister’s aim in passing thon discreditterd act?

  16. Casa Rebelde is a Dublin operation as far as I know, they have a version of the Lost Souls T Shirt selling for 25 euro. I read that they made a change to original t-shirt to “Stll Deid FC” or something along those lines. Think the idea of the change was to prevent them being sued by Burton’s, not sure if that will be enough but maybe they know what they are doing.

And there have been no damaged seats since the last time we got blanket coverage at Motherwell.

  18. So Celtic are the only team in the country to have a problem element amongst their support. Same as Celtic are the only team who have players reported to the compliance officer. Even when innocent or unproven.

Mrs budge wouldn’t dare try to have Celtic pay for two weeks worth of damage? Would she.

    I smell sh*te.

  21. I suspect that Anne Budge came under a lot of pressure from Hearts fans and officers of the club after the defeat to release that statement. They would have been hurtin badly after that defeat.

If they had won I bet their would have been no statement.

Spending millions recording and arresting fans whilst cocaine is easily obtained in public places and pubs etc

good way to spend public money…

  23. Given that my colleague has left Celtic Park early due to his daughter feeling intimidated by away fans, I can well believe Anne Budge’s statement. Some kids are just more sensitive than others.

She’s opened a tit for tat can of worms, but other than that I’ve no real issue with her statement. She should be warned though that in the not too recent past the few hundred fans that Hearts would bring were generally known to cause more damage at CP than the 7500 fans of their big cousins.

I suspect her statement may come back to bite her in the not to distant future.

Nowhere in this statement does Ann Budge use the terms “sectarian thugs”, so why has the @Daily_Record misquoted her?

This from Recent Supporters Forum report.

CST then raise the issue of the Family Stand and the current location, the point is made that having young children located next to the visiting supporters places them at risk from coin throwing and other potential abuse. Reference is made to the matches against Ajax, Aberdeen and more recently Maribor. The Club advise that there are plans to review the current arrangement and will update as soon as a satisfactory location is identified and take this as an action.

In no way condoning bad behaviour by our fans … Indeed hope the club fully investigate and act accordingly

I wonder if ann budge has visited Celtic park in the past when her team came to play us

In particular the evening a couple of years ago when the guy had a heart attack near 101 .. Our crowd went silent as the medics attempted CPR … And you all know how the hearts fans reacted

  30. I would have thought there were more damaged seats when Sevco played them.

A lot of anger after a frustrating defeat whereas we had an easy victory.

Very strange that this doesn’t get mentioned since there’s usually a big drive to point out that one side’s as bad as the other.

Plus, there was a bigger crowd at that match as well.

  31. sean thornton-We will be paying for seats already damaged before Sunday but there is an element at CP,and more so away from home that need sorted out.Ann Budge,i think has broken an unwritten rule re damage by visiting fans, not excusing the morons btw.I’m afraid the days of Celtic fans ‘policing’ their own has gone.

  32. Ms Budge’s statement seems well-intended and even-handed. I have no problem with it and decent minded Tims (the vast majority in my opinion) will probably feel the same way.

Every support has its lunatic fringe and ours is no different. Anyone who thinks we don’t have them has never been to a game, home or away. Also, that fixture at Tyncastle has always brought out the worst in both sets of supporters, probably because the place is so small.

Maybe it’s time to level the playing field completely and list damages at each SPFL ground after each fixture. I feel sure our support would not turn out to be the worst, particularly proportionally.
