Time on the bench gave Hooper space

1040

This season, Gary Hooper has looked well below form of last term; his touch, movement and goals record don’t match up, but he came off the bench on Thursday to score a truly excellent goal.  Controlling a difficult ball in the centre circle, with defenders in close attendance, he picked out Giorgios Samaras before sprinting past his markers and finishing.

The winner against Motherwell was less spectacular but required sharp movement and spatial awareness.

Footballers cannot always play through bad form, sometimes they need a break, even for an hour on the bench, to get a different perspective on how they and the team play.

Despite his return to form I would retain the same 4-2-3-1 formation against Inverness next time out.

Tom Mc – look at it as a shot across the bow from the Celtic support to the board, just in case. It may even have been exactly what the board were after.

Tommy Joad : there are fleeting periods in that Hagler v Leonard fight when they really go toe to toe and the boxing is quite simply sublime. It went against the grain for Sugar Ray to try and outfight Marvin Hagler, as he knew that Hagler would take him out, so he just kept moving and scoring points with jabs and combinations against probably the most ruthless, efficient boxer that ever entered the ring.

I went into the fight a fan of Sugar, but that’s not the way I felt after it, as Marvellous Marvin tried time after time to take the battle to Leonard.

If you haven’t seen the full fight, then I won’t spoil it for you, but the sport lost an absolute legend after that fight.

I don’t know anything about what is going on behind the red brick listed fascia of Celtic Park the answer to your query How can Celtic FC have had discussions on what they might do when something that hasn’t happened eventually happens? is straightforward.

Every organisation does it. It is called contingency planning; agreed courses of action that will capitalise on whatever happens. I may or may not agree with the approach adopted, but I would be disappointed if discussions weren’t undertaken.

A wee bit like having a plan ‘B’ should we go one down in a cup final and there is only 30 seconds left…..”Bring on Paddy McCourt!”….and with one shoulder tip and two relocated dislocated hips we suddenly find ourselves 3-1 up.

Re Phil Mac’s revelations – I wonder if this was what we were all missing with Whyte’s takeover? Maybe the discussions were had prior to his buying Poundland for, er, a pound. He knew he could renege on all those debts, suffer a 1 year, 10pt penalty, and start with a clean slkate (though a hell of a lot of irate suplliers). He will be hailed has the man who saved the unmentionables. Murray couldn’t do it – he would have been personally liable perhaps? But new broom comes in, tidies the mess, -10pts, thank you very much.

Given the rules aboout the majority voting in the SPL could Celtic veto anything even if they wanted to? What galls me is that they are a “special case”. Where were these interpretations when WE were about to go bust? Whilst Reid stated – “we’ll no longer accept being treated as less than anyone” he forgot to say and “we won’t accept anyone being treated as more thany anyone”.

    Morning bhoys

To lift the mood a little. Consider those international giants with a MASSIVE worldwide following who, in order to compensate for the loss of european income this year, are embarking on an ambitious european adventure. They are playing Corby Town (so MASSIVE are the cheats’ opponents, I’m not sure of their name). A spokesman commenting on the mutual financial benefit this tie represents to both clubs said:

“For people who don’t know much about Corby or our new stadium, Steel Park has a capacity of approximately 3,800 and although we know we won’t fill it on the night…”

  14. According to rangerstaxcase Phil Mac has been roundly attacked by Celtic supporters for his blog yesterday. While I hope what he wrote was wrong, I am saddened that the support should turn on one of our own who has done so much to expose the illegality going on in Govan.

  16. Good morning CQN from the fast train to Glasgow.

Having slept on yesterdays discussions I still have concern that the huns get away with this. Unless the Celtic board quietly lobby the other clubs clubs with a vision, a bright picture of life without rfc for a few seasons, I h have a concern that Paul67’s article of a couple weeks back becomes the reality – that is it ask happens so quickly and the panic created by rfc and the media will ensure the clubs panic and potentially vote them back in. That is unless our board embark on a project to look at at how our game could improve without the huns, paint this picture to the clubs and bring them with us on that journey to better our game. I don’t have the answers but some ideas could be minimum no. of Scottish players playing (phased in), more equitable split of tv and european monies, possible share of gate receipts, there is many others which could be considered.

Our board need to be doing this now, not waiting until the event, as BRTH has so eloquently pointed out there is many good legal reasons to stop their re-entry, the should 100% be highlighted and used, but we need a carrot as well as a stick. We are paying our board an awful lot of money, they should be able to come up with workable amd viable ideas which would entice others to vote against re-entry, my other big nagging concern is, there isn’tany will to do it. Our board with their inaction and simply letting this run its course will be playing its own wee part in the demise of Scottish football, at a time when they have the biggest opportunity to change it for the better, to do something historical, something which could make us a footballing force again.

Will they step up to theatk, sadly, I doubt it.

Yes, agreed timing is wrong- as nothing has been proven-yet.

Tom -I agree some are lashing out widely at DD and PL, however, most are looking for reassurance that there is clear leadership from theses 2 guys, communicated more effectively -I accept Auldheid’s point about timing on the currrent tax case as above -you seem to feel that CFC cannot be planning ahead; how they will respond if HMRC find them guilty and if SFA have been complicit in awarding Euro licences?

Planning ahead and considering response is one of the first strap-lines of PL’s Job Description- if the leadership are not considering options and responses… just what the hell are they doing? The frustrations of fans does not start and stop at Ragers tax case, there is pent up anger at a list of things and we don’t need to be told that the press and anti-Celtic peopl are stirring it up …the issues are as much in-house as they are real.

Very few are having a boot at theses guys for the hell of it – there are valid reasons for concern and I suspect you knew that already.

  21. Plenty has been said already about Phil Mac’s blog yesterday and Celtic’s tentative response. My own thoughts are that Phil has been given certain information and has relayed that in good faith relying on the accuracy of his source. Celtic cyberspace then exploded with trepidation/anger (delete as appropriate) at the thought of Rangers cheating their way to their last 7 titles and getting away with just a minor slap on the wrists with Celtic nodding their heads in approval in the background.

Personally I don’t think Celtic could go any further than they did yesterday. Nobody knows if Rangers will go into administration or (better still) liquidation and to provide the media with information on Celtic’s plans should either of those two scenarios unfold would be jumping the gun. Celtic would be teed up for a PR disaster if Rangers somehow obtain further investment, win the tax case or otherwise avoid insolvency.

PR is a difficult enough task for Celtic in a country whose media are aligned with their biggest rivals and I would admit that we don’t always get it right. This time, however, I don’t think we had any other option than to provide an informal, non-specific response if only to stop Celtic fans getting ahead of ourselves and have boycotts, protests etc arranged for something that has not even been considered.

Just to clarify, in the event of Rangers’ insolvency, any course of action by Celtic other than a robust attack on them and an agressive campaign to have them relegated and their titles stripped would be dereliction of duty by the board members in my eyes. I am in complete agreement with Auldheid – a level financial playing field would have seen us blow them out of the water over the past decade. McLeish would never have won his two taxpayer funded titles and the post-Kaunas transfer madness (and by extension their 3 in a row) would never have happened. I want all guns blazing if they hit administration, liquidation and/or lose the tax case!

Not sure what sort of a formation 4 5 3 1 would be, but negative it certainly wouldn’t be. Illegal yes but if we could get away with it, i doubt even Barcelona would be a match for us. :-)

    Hi Fellow Celtic Fans!

I have just read Phil’s article and I have to say that if there is any truth in this then I am absolutely shocked, saddened and outraged. I used to think, perhaps naively, that it was just possible that a ‘Rangers Phoenix’ would be allowed to start again, debt free. I now think it a much more likely scenario that if the Powers That Be at Celtic are so out of touch with the common fans and give their approval, tacit or otherwise, to a ‘Rangers Phoenix’, then it will be Celtic who will be ripped apart by this. I for one would definitely switch my allegiance to a new football club, and ‘Walfrid Phoenix FC’ would be my preferred name, who would be prepared to start at the bottom and pursue everything that Brother Walfrid stood for. Although Celtic is one of the true loves of my life, sometimes when a partner cheats on you and the trust is shattered, it is time to get a divorce and move on. Painful initially, but healthier in the long run. I beg of you Celtic, don’t cheat on me and don’t rip our relationship apart. IF you do, I for my part will be moving on.

    Yours in Celtic,

  24. Good morning from MK where we’re promised rain later today.

I can understand why Celtic would get involved in the politicking but for me the one non-negotiable is that Rangers are stripped of all trophies and leagues they won during the period they gained an unfair financial advantage.

  25. Some poster have given the opinion Celtic are between a rock and a hard place.

I disagree, all Celtic have to do is see the rules as they currently stand applied.

If the SFA try to change the rules to allow newhun to face no sanctions then Celtic should do everything they can to have the rules applied, so should every other club, all of the other teams have been cheated.

  26. ian_in_budapest on

If I were a Celtic Board Member (and I’m willing should anyone wish to nominate me), I would currently be lobbying for entry to another league because if Rangers do drop out of the SPL the game’s a bogey in Scotland (regardless of what the support thinks and says about continuing to attend matches in a weakened league).

What amazes me is that so much of our recent thinking has been focused on joining the EPL, ‘the greatest league in the world’. Yet, we have few friends South of the border, at least until they would like us to roll up for some match that will line the pocket of a retiring player. The EPL is not the obvious choice for Celtic, the truly best league in the world, La Liga, should be our number one choice. Football is about to change and we have real cause and motivation to be at the head of the queue demanding a new set-up. We have a well-managed business operation and we should be a welcome addition to any league, but none more so than La Liga. Why?

Firstly, we enjoy good relations with many clubs in Spain and at different levels. Secondly, by careful arrangement of our fixture list in that league, we could, at least in theory, play much of our Winter football in Spain and our home games in the Autumn and Spring. Thirdly, there is a historic Celtic connection between Scotland and Spain, a place where we will not be derided for our Irish, or Irish Catholic, heritage. Fourthly, in such a set-up, there will be considerable scope for our club to grow and develop. Fifthly, say what you like, but I reckon that most of our fans would prefer trips to Madrid and Barcelona over trips to Ibrox and Tynecastle. Anyhow, there should be little to stop us taking part in Scottish football with a reserve side, at least in cup competitions.

Clearly there are important barriers to be overcome in joining another league but if I were on the Celtic Board right now, I would be insisting that all new administrative employees be fluent in Spanish.
