Time on the bench gave Hooper space

1040

This season, Gary Hooper has looked well below form of last term; his touch, movement and goals record don’t match up, but he came off the bench on Thursday to score a truly excellent goal.  Controlling a difficult ball in the centre circle, with defenders in close attendance, he picked out Giorgios Samaras before sprinting past his markers and finishing.

The winner against Motherwell was less spectacular but required sharp movement and spatial awareness.

Footballers cannot always play through bad form, sometimes they need a break, even for an hour on the bench, to get a different perspective on how they and the team play.

Despite his return to form I would retain the same 4-2-3-1 formation against Inverness next time out.

  1. I’m not surprised that Phil has been condemned by some Celtic fans, having already had the misfortune to have seen what has previously been posted on one particular, so called Celtic site.

It’s as bad as FF and should serve as a reminder to the overwhelming majority of good right minded Celtic fans that there are eejits, in our support also.

If they’d flaunted them, they’d have had to nail them to a stick and wave them around.

  5. The work RTC has done on his blog is sensational and I have incredible respect for the power of work he has done and the expert analysis of tax rules and insolvency law is brilliantly explained. I do not however agree at all with his latest piece that suggests we have to accept that in the real world Rangers Phoenix club will remain in the SPL. I think this analysis only holds water if you’re looking at the financial health of Scottish football for the next few years. I want leaders who will look at the next 25 years and more years and realise that scottsh football is not worth saving if one team is always treated as the teacher’s pet. Equal treatment for all teams please. We need leaders of the game in Scotland with a long term vision and a few years in the lower divisions increasing interest in those leagues will do Rangers and the Scottish game more good in the long run. If rangers remain in the SPL the loss if revenue from Celtic fans who react to it by walking away from a tarnished product will be at least as much as that list to the SPL by rangers’ starting in division 3.

Good stuff from you last night as ever. Couple of points:

    1) You are quoting the SPL rules as of April 2011. Have these been materially changed since 2001? I would expect so, particularly the clauses dealing with insolvency, together with any reinforced financial requirements brought in to reflect UEFA licensing reqs. Accordingly some of your points will have different weight at different times.

    2) The small tax case dates from 1998, coincident with the formation of the SPL itself and the decline of Rangers from profitable enterprise to capital incinerator. That these payments have been accepted by Rangers as unlawful is worthy of further consideration.

    3) It is possible that the players’ contracts, as submitted to the SPL over the years, were in line with the requirement. A clause to the effect that a given player would be “eligible to participate in the Murray Group Management etc Trust” might be sufficient to satisfy the requirements. They would of course thereafter have to note the values of contributions made to the Trust for each player individually. This however might well scupper their position at FTT that the payments were non-contractual.

    3) Celtic also used a similar scheme during season 2004/05: “The Celtic plc Employee Benefit Trust” received contributions of £765K during that single season. Were these payments notified to SPL in line with whatever the requirement was at that time? I’m sure there are many of us who would quite like to see Celtic’s record for that season wiped out!

Of course, I am not expecting that you pore over the previous versions of the SPL rules to determine the status of the reporting requirement for each season since 1998, but in the event that the SPL adopted the position you suggest – diligent retrospective application of the rules – they would of course have to do this.

Must say, the idea that Rangers, in failing to notify the SPL of the true means of remunerating their players, and with such means thereafter being found to be unlawful (small tax case confirmed, big tax case pending), should retrospectively forfeit any awards during the period of operation, together with any other appropriate sanctions, has some uncomfortable connotations for the current President of the SFA, who was a Director of Rangers for much of the period in question.

That his more recent role as a Director at Hearts appears to be coincident with equally spectacular failures in corporate governance, should cause concern that transparency at the SFA is compromised at this critical moment.

A Naples Court has sentenced Luciano Moggi [ Ex General Director of Juve ] to 5 years and 3 months in prison for his role in the Calciopoli match fixing scandal .

A big cheese Refereeing Administrator was given 3 years and 8 months.

The owner of Fiorentina was given 1 year and 3 months.

The President of Lazio was given 1 year and 3 months ..

Another 14 people were found guilty and given a variety of punishments -some custodial / some financial.

All found guilty of Sporting Fraud , Corruption and Conspiracy . All given custodial sentences-

    but —-

the truly absurd nature of the Italian Legal system will mean that not one of the convicted will set foot in prison—– they will appeal ,appeal and appeal again to the point where the sentence and the serving of the sentence will be deemed to be time -barred.

Good Morning to the Celtic Family from a grey and Damp Central Scotland. Is it true have we fallen so far that as Kenny misser is saying that Rangers could cash in on Jelavic in the January transfer window and still win the SPL ? I have made my point about IF Celtic help to keep a new Rangers in the SPL I will be finished with Scottish Football and Celtic we must make a stand for honesty and decency and if found guilty Rangers must be punished properly.H.H.

When we last won the league against hertz at CP..seems like a lifetime ago

I invited a friend of a friend up from Dublin to the game. this guy’s father was directly involved in ’16 rising, so he was no spring chicken -but surprisingly, not as old as you would think -anyway, he had always wanted to visit CP and what better time than a league decider?

I collected him from the airport, put him for a few nights, wined and dined him and before the game walked up throught the Gallowgate and took him into a few pubs. He was astounded at the colour and music ..”nothing like this in Dublin” of course the game went as planned and we had a great night ending up with a great sing-song in the Admiral

Next day we are at a bit of a loose end waiting for his evening flight…both with sair heids..what to do?

We decided to go for a drive up Loch Lomond and have lunch in the Inverarnan. John was talking about how perfect his week had been and the result and the fans and everything was so well organised …just like Jim’ll Fix It ..we had to explain about Jim to my 11 yr old daughter who I had brought along as a wee ‘sorry’ for being on the ‘lash’ for a week.

Anyway as we were leaving the car park to drive back to the airport ..there was a guy with long white hair and a gold tracksuit crossing the road towards the pub …right in front of the car. John shouted “eff me … it that Jimmy SAVILLE????” and it sure was

Jimmy realised he had been recognised (we were hanging out the widows like teenyboppers by then)..and in classic style, gave the ‘two thumbs up’ salute (would love to say he had the big cigar..but that sadly not)

wow ..what was that all about?

To this day John thinks Jim ‘Fixed It’ for him ..and in a way…. he did ;-)

  19. Ref the poppy ban on shorts for weekend games.

Just how far out of touch are these idiots at UEFA? Major games taking place the day immediately before Armistice Day and they think it is appropriate to ban teams wearing the poppy on their shirts.

When you consider the millions who died across Europe in the Great War and WW2 and subsequent wars this is a very appropriate and opportune moment to have such a display.

To think these muppets ask players to wear the word RESPECT on their sleeves. Makes me wonder RESPECT for what?

Consider also that we list a player in the Great War who later won a Victoria Cross and how many of us lost grandparents or parents in various conflicts.

I saw your post about Gilford the other day. There was indeed a club and I knew a few members. They travelled together with our club ‘Anton Rogan CSC’.

Unfortunately they and ourselves like other small clubs could not find it viable to travel with the new era of the Season Ticket. Some of them were subsumed into other clubs and I know at least one regular who travels with the Tommy Burns CSC Portadown.
