Time on the bench gave Hooper space

1040

This season, Gary Hooper has looked well below form of last term; his touch, movement and goals record don’t match up, but he came off the bench on Thursday to score a truly excellent goal.  Controlling a difficult ball in the centre circle, with defenders in close attendance, he picked out Giorgios Samaras before sprinting past his markers and finishing.

The winner against Motherwell was less spectacular but required sharp movement and spatial awareness.

Footballers cannot always play through bad form, sometimes they need a break, even for an hour on the bench, to get a different perspective on how they and the team play.

Despite his return to form I would retain the same 4-2-3-1 formation against Inverness next time out.

  2. I’ve no doubt the Celtic board will want the newco huns to be allowed straight into the SPL.

    Because they need the money.

At the same time they don’t want to alienate the Celtic Support.

    Because they need our money.

So, that’s the circle they have to square.

Make sure thet the huns back in, distance themselves from the process, and it’s business as usual. Maybe even a bigger bonus!

So look out for a lot of hand wringing, claims of impotence and faux outrage from Peter Lawwell.

    WHY, WHY, WHY ?

Like everyone else, I have been struggling for a few weeks now and the question is Why?

Why when at the start of the season when we were confident of winning the league have we fallen so far behind at this early stage? Why are the same players from last season not performing in the same manner as they did for the first part of this year. Why don’t I stop giving examples now because I could be here all day there are that many.

To find the answer, which I think I am going to make a good stab at, I think we need to ‘look outside the box’. Yes injuries have played a massive part, yes some players seem to have had a few distractions but even with all the legitimate reasons we keep finding, it still does not justify the gap. We also are not exactly in a new territory here, it was the same under Tony Mowbray, it was the same for Tommy Burns, it was even the same for ‘Them’ under Paul Le Guen.

When the Legned Walter returned to across the city the one thing he did that changed his team around was to build that siege mentality, my god he had to because I don’t care what anyone says his tactics and football philosophy were sh*t.

He built up the no one likes us we don’t care mentality in not only his players but the fans. When he broke the news to Chic Young that Lloyds’ were running the show, he galvanised the myth of him being Mr Dignity. He was speaking out on behalf of the players, the fans and the need for them to become ‘One’ against the big bad bankers and the others in the East End and so unite behind him they did.

How many times did we refer to them as a club on its knees waiting to die, a club who could only lash out in small bursts, yet with his poor thread bare squad and no money to spend, another myth to assist in the deception, he galvanised his players to win a third title in a row. Even now with the impending Sword Of Damocles hanging over them in the form of financial Armageddon from not only the tax man but their new owner, who it would appear is not fit to run a sweet shop, they are miles in front in the league and yet most of them are still united behind the man who may cause their ultimate demise.

Meanwhile across the city in the East End, we have a young manager who would appear still to not have grasped the siege mentality concept, yet he had it in his hand a few months ago. With the bombs, the bullets, the cheating referees and the cheating Scottish Football Association there is not one of us, let alone one of the players who were not up for the fight, the anger we felt at being unfairly treated resinated from the stands and on to the field of play, we had it all in an abundance only to let it slip. Yet again I find myself asking WHY.

Well remember the everything is ok line, we will be here for years to come, the books are balancing. We needed a striker, a central defender and goal keeper, add to that as long as we can keep our two most valuable assets in Izzy and Kayal everything will be fine. All achieved on paper so move along ‘Timmy’ fans, nothing to see here.

The gutter journalists in the main stream media are as always there to assist with the negativity.

As soon as ‘they’ fell to two diddy teams, European football became a negative, a distraction from the bigger prize of the SPL. Well excuse me, since when did the SPL become a bigger prize than a European tournament. I would give my right arm for a visit to Romania in May.

I remember Seville like yesterday, yet with the exception of the Centenary Year and a bit of the stopping of the ten, all my league memories are pretty faint. Oh so we are not good enough to get to Romania, I hear you say, wrong, poor teams can get there, I use ‘Them’ going to Manchester as an example. Do you also believe that we are that poor, but for a refereeing decision and the most calamitous of own goals we would be 2 points clear at the top of one of the hardest groups.

Yet how many of you are buying into this media crap of doom and gloom. Their fear is the fact that the league is over, with impending administration they know there is no way Ally will steer his under 19’s to a title and that’s what it will be, a team of kids. The 10 point deduction will not kill them, it will be the fire sale of their most valuable assets in January that does the damage.

I am also not saying that we need ‘Them’ to go into administration to win the league; they will encounter their own football problems at some point. We just need to be there to take advantage. We know that with a bit of fire in their belly’s the players do raise their game, they have shown us this recently against Kilmarnock, the Hibs midweek game, Rennes and again at Motherwell.

Maybe if we create our own siege mentality around our club and get back to the good old Paranoid Tim scenarios things would be different. We could maybe start with Charlie Richmond’s performance from last Sunday and move on to these idiots who get paid to write bullshit about our club, then maybe our siege mentality will wear off on the players in the form of backing them loudly from the start and we wont have to go a goal down before the players get started.

Remember, the idiots can say and paint as bad a picture as they like, but there is still only one club in Scotland playing for FOUR trophy’s.

For what it is worth I think that Phil is on the money with his information about the Celtic Board’s position, which is a provisional, and private one.

I wouldn’t expect Celtic to admit this and in fact I wouldn’t admit them to deny it, but the fact they have doesn’t surprise me. What else would you expect them to say?

McGeouch in a daze after two amazing days

By: Laura Brannan on 08 Nov, 2011 11:41

DYLAN McGeouch capped off a dream two days in the green and white Hoops with a goal in the 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Celtic Park. It follows his first-team debut, when he came on asa a substitute at Fir Park against Motherwell.

His well-worked solo effort opened the scoring in the NextGen Series win against the English side and he was delighted with his contribution.

Speaking exclusively to the Huddle Online, McGeouch said: “It was a good goal and it was special to get one like that on a night like this. It was a big game and it helped the team.

“I thought I would maybe be involved, depending on whether I got on against Motherwell and if I did, how long it would be on for.

“It was good to make my first-team debut and it gave me a wee lift as well. But I wanted to play against Manchester City, especially in front of the crowd as well so I could show what I can do.

“I thought I played okay, but I was a bit tired with the travelling I’ve been doing with the first-team. I was a bit sloppy in the second-half but we worked well as a team and got the three points.”

The three points keeps Celtic in contention for the knock-out stage of the NextGen Series with two games remaining – away to Barcelona and a home fixture with Marseille.

McGeouch was delighted the Hoops built on their 4-2 win against Manchester City last month to secure two straight victories in the competition.

“I thought we did well and it was a good three points,” he said. “The main part of our team talk was saying we had to show them what we could do, but when we didn’t have the ball we had to work our way back, chase it and cut things down.

“We know we´re a good team but we knew if we gave them enough time they would hurt us.”

McGeouch wasn’t the only teenager to make his debut within the last week, as team-mate Marcus Fraser was also handed his chance, in the UEFA Europa League tie against Rennes. And he also got on the scoresheet against Manchester City.

The midfielder is starting to see a big development in the youth squad and is pleased to see that being noticed at the senior level.

“It’s a great set-up here,“ he said. “The other night we had four young guys on the bench against Rennes and then another few at the weekend too. It just shows the manager isn’t scared to throw us in, so it’s looking promising.

“It has been a dream for me since I was a ball boy here to get a place in the Celtic first-team – and now it’s happened I don’t really know what to say, it’s unbelievable.”

Only problem is that DD will stall on the grounds that until thetax case is resolved, there is no point to calling an EGM to discuss a hyothetical situation.

From the small shareholders point of view and absolute condition of an EGM is that the absentee landlord attends in person and is not represented by a proxy.

  11. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

You are on the money 100% pal.

IF they go into administration and get their deduction and they can remain in the SPL by selling players all fine and dandy but if they go out of business

they must go to division 3 and work their way up.

They will get NO UEFA licence anyway so face 3 years minus that money.

Do not allow laptop loyal lobbying to distract us or Celtic. If Rangers lose this case they must suffer and they must be humiliated for any kind of justice to ensue.

If they can satisfy everyone that they can pay what they owe and stay in business, they cannot drop down divisions anyway, it is only with insolvency or have I got that wrong.

Young talent to develop, moer competitive league, lower prices and guaranteed Champions league money or the shot at it for Celtic for at least 3 years. What is not to like.

Remind EVERY team in the SPL Rangers have cheated them out of money. EVERY SINGLE ONE over the years which cannot be made up by their bigoted supporters paying to go through the turnstiles once or twice a season.

Sky will pull the plug? Go for it Sky. I dare you. I double dare you so we can lose that 2Million a year while you insure English no mark clubs up the backside.

Scottish football will not become like the Irish league, this is scaremongering and even if it did, Scotland and Scottish football needs to change. we need to get rid of thuggery from our game and getting rid of the biggest thugs of all might help do that. Get rid of hammer throwing football and we’ll have a better league.

If they only go into administration then fine. If they cannot pay up, it is division 3 and a long way back. You reap what you sow.

  14. Phil may have been a stalking horse called Serendipity for there can be no doubt the responses to his article have been informative.

On the general point about Rangers fate I think an agreement is inevitable but it must satisfy the following conditions not only for Rangers but for our game..

    The Past

1.An apology for their financial recklessness to all of Scottish Football

    2. The loss the two titles in 2003 and 2005 because of the EBTs that enabled them and the three titles since 2009 because they used debt that could have gone to HMRC to reduce tax owed to fund those titles.

    The Present

    3. At least a 10 points deduction if they are able to carry on as Rangers.

    4. They have to break even by the end of the season.(i.e sell off the players in Jan who have created their debt)

    The Future

    5. Changes in the way the refereeing service is conducted

    6. Tighten the licencing rules to stop unsustainable debt buying trophies.

    7. Put fit and proper ownership processes in place.

A seven step programme to more healthy football.

In return Celtic offer not to sue Rangers/the SFA and the SPL.

many have already expressed their view on what we should do and potential effect on Celtic should we be seen to go along with it – myself included.

What cannot be in any doubt though is that of the board were NOT discussing potential scenarios they would be guilt of negligence to their duties.

without knowing the results of the HMRc tribunal I believe it is impossible for Celtic to comment; indeed they have no right to comment without a decision.

However I think it is fair to say they have been warned.

An agreement between HMRC and Rangers is “inevitable” ????????? As that is the only show in town at the moment.

Sounds like a major league cop out for me.

If this were to happen that we were allowing our shareholders and local communities to be diddled to preserve the Old Firm.

Will you accept that I have been right all along in that we are in fact Old Firm.

It would be written in Stone. No phoney faux pas outrage we are different sides of the same coin.

It is definitely not a new requirement (Old Firm preservation)

There are plenty of journeymen “hammer throwers” in Scotland who will give their eye teeth to play for rangers for minimum money..

What do most players outside Celtic and rangers get paid ? A grand ? A couple of grand ? They can afford that.

The players don’t need to be that good – just hard and playing for something they believe in. They will be protected, Their style will not change. Yellows and reds and penalties, all one way traffic.

  26. Auldheid,

if your proposal was to come to pass should the following bolded sections be removed from our mission statements ?

    Corporate :: Social Mission

    Introduction

Celtic Football Club is legendary and as with most legends as much myth as fact surrounds its history and what the Club stands for today. The Social Mission Statement aims to simply define what the Club stands for and seeks to promote within society.

    History

Celtic Football Club was founded in 1888. Its principal founder was a Marist Brother named Walfrid. The Club had two principal aims: The first aim was to raise funds to provide food for the poor of the East End of Glasgow, an area of the City that was greatly impoverished and had a high rate of infant mortality. Within the East End was a large Irish community and friction was growing between the native Glaswegians and the new influx of Irish. Brother Walfrid saw the need for social integration and his vision was a football club that Scottish and Irish, Protestants and Catholics alike could support. A new football club would be a vehicle to bring the communities together and this was the second aim. The Marist brother sought for the Club to have both a Scottish and Irish identity and hence, the Club’s name “Celtic” came about, representing a bridge of cultures across the Irish Sea.

Current Positioning of Celtic Football Club

Celtic Football Club is a Scottish football club with proud Irish links. The primary business of Celtic is as a football club. It is run on a professional business basis with no political agenda. However, the Club has a wider role and the responsibility of being a major Scottish social institution promoting health, well-being and social integration.

Who is Celtic Football Club for?

Celtic Football Club is for people who want to support a football club that strives for excellence in Scotland and in Europe, is proud of its history, supportive of its local community and seeks to support the following aims: “To maximise all opportunities to disassociate the Club from sectarianism and bigotry of any kind. To promote Celtic as a Club for all people, regardless of gender, age, religion, race or ability.”

    Summary

Celtic is a club for everyone who believes in football as a medium for healthy pleasure, entertainment and social integration. The Club always has been and always will simply aim to be the team of the people.

    Corporate :: Social Charter

    Why have a Social Charter?

Celtic has always been more than a football club. Part of that extra quality of Celtic has been the social dimension linked to the reasons Brother Walfrid founded Celtic back in the 1880s.

Celtic Football Club has changed a great deal in recent years. The ownership of the Club has been transformed from few to many. The finances of the Club have been placed on a sound and solid basis. Celtic Park, while remaining on the site of past triumphs, has developed beyond recognition.

Celtic will continue to change in order to meet the aspirations of its fans and to live up to the principles behind Brother Walfrid’s reasons for founding the Club. This will be carried out within a sound business plan ensuring development of the football set up and continued improvement for Celtic Park.

Jock Stein always sought to impress upon the fans the importance of the founding principles of the Club and the need for the fans to live up to those principles.

High expectations of management, players and supporters continues to be the norm at Celtic Park and the Social Charter aims to set out the best that Celtic stands for.

    Celtic Social Charter

Celtic Football Club, from the supporters to the management and owners, welcome the statement of intent in its Social Charter to set out the values and actions that are part of the best that Celtic stands for

The best that Celtic stands for is supporting the charitable principles of its founder.

The best that Celtic stands for is promoting health and well-being, understanding and positive social integration.

The best that Celtic stands for is as an inclusive organisation being open to all regardless of age, sex, race, religion or disability.

The best that Celtic stands for is upholding a shared set of positive values including success, fair play, and appreciation of skills.

Irrespective of what happens to the orcs (relegation or otherwise) I would take step 6 and very much tighten that up:

Immediately expand the SPL to 16 teams and have a 4 year amnesty against relegation.

During this period, clubs will have no excuse, none whatsoever, for paying players more than 50p per week (ok, that might be a tad drastic) if they are up to their eyes in debt. This would allow them to rein in their debts, which, if at the end of the four year period is not within 20% of their turnover, they are kicked out of the league.

This debt management would be coupled with the wages/turnover ratio to ensure that debt+wages is never more than 75% of a clubs annual turnover.

Departures from such management would be allowed in certain circumstances (unstated, but likely to include infrastructure improvements), but would stipulate that player acquisition and remuneration must not contribute to a marked increase beyond such targets.

Promotion and relegation would then start up at the end of the fourth season with 3-up, 3-down with relegation places being decided on the merits of league position but also on financial health (and indeed financial integrity – figures would be submitted every financial quarter).

Udinese have 50 ” full time ” scouts . In addition to that they have a world wide network of some 500 scouts who send them weekly reports.

Since 2000 – their sign “prospects ‘, develop them and sell them policy has made them a reported profit of 112 million euros.

Udinese played Siena last weekend . Udinese won 2 -1 . Siena’s goalkeeper, Brkic, had a fabulous game — he saved Siena from a real doing . Brkic is on loan at Siena -from Udinese.

  29. Question for any of our financial / legal brains on here.

If CW wanted to avoid the debt, the tax bill AND avoid any worse action than administration (e.g. insolvancy with the loss of history / european income for three seasons) is there anything to stop him doing the following:

Run up a ~ £150M debt to his holding company (via stupidly high interest on the current ‘overdraft’ and a lot of consultancy fees, etc.)

Structure this debt in a similar way to how Murray moved the bulk of the 80M debt at one point into MIH (e.g. it is only payable if certain conditions are met, therefore the company is not trading whilst insolvent).

Go into admin post tax case loss.

His holding company, with over 75% debt, could overrule HMRC wishes and write all debt off for pennies?

His parent company would still need the cash to underwrite such an amount. What you’re asking is essentially what Abramovich is doing at Chelsea and various others at numerous other clubs in England (Man City, Wigan, etc).

Do you think Whyte has such a cash amount for such an undertaking?
